Iowa?

Also, does an in-stater only fill IS openings, and likewise for out-of-staters filling only OOS openings?

The lists are completely seperate...you are only eligible to fill an in-state slot...although i really wish iowa would start acting more like minnesota and wisconsin and start taking 80-90% in-states...it seems like there must be some massive movement on the OOS side if your numbers are correct...and while i think oos students bring a lot to the school if you look at the AAMC numbers the state of iowa has a bunch of highly qualified applicants at least by the numbers as a state our MCAT and GPA averages are near top.

Well, got the alternate list letter today. Even though it says "it is difficult to estimate an alternate's chances of being admitted," I figured it wouldn't hurt to try, anyways. Here is some info I got from the 2005 US News Med School Guide.

IS: Acc-128, Enr-97
OOS: Acc-149, Enr-45

From that info, they took 31 off the In-state list (I'm IS). I know it varies year to year, but does anyone know the numbers from the past few years?

Also, does an in-stater only fill IS openings, and likewise for out-of-staters filling only OOS openings?

2006 US NEWS Med School Guide:

IS: Acc-131, Enr-96
OOS: Acc-161, Enr-46

It looks like there could be some solid wait-list movement if very few have declined acceptances up to this point? Maybe?

Come on USPS... 👍
:luck: to everyone waiting for the mail or the list!

Just FYI, I thought I had the 2005 US News - turns out it's the 2004. So, the stats are from the "Fall 2003 applications and acceptees."

So, this is not how I expected this thread to turn out. I know SDN is only a small sample of the applicants out there and we have only heard from Iowa City folks, but I just thought there would be more positive stories hitting this thread. Damn.

I have ofcourse no hope of getting in considering Im OOS and they had already "overaccepted" OOS'rs according to what they told us on the interview day a few months ago.
Those are my thoughts too. From what they told us, my understanding was that a lot of OOS folks come in off the waitlist, but that all of the initial acceptances are given during the rolling portion of the admissions where they "overaccept."

I haven't seen the mail today, but I'll let you know if I'm waitlisted or rejected when I find out...

:luck: Good luck to everyone nervously stalking the mailman.

No surprise here: OOS alternate list, in the 30s (coincidentally, the same # as my MCAT score)

I was sure relieved to hear that members of the Admissions Committee were impressed with my credentials, even though they were unable to offer admission to every qualified applicant at this time! 😛

Damn. But you were going to go somehwere else anyway, weren't you SailCrazy? If not (because I would like to meet you!), I could totally imagine 30 OOS turning down offers.

gdbaby, you know me well! 😀 And it would be great to meet up somewhere along the way!

Michigan is my front-runner at this point, but Iowa is definitely a school that I would love to attend. 👍 So if I were accepted in the near future off the waitlist, I'd take a look at the financial aid offer before making a final decision. (I am holding a few acceptances from schools that I like, waiting to see how financial aid turns out.) That said, being out of state and not someone that Iowa lwanted enough to admit straight away, the chances of them deciding to throw much money my way are probably pretty small.

I do agree that it is entirely possible for 30-40 people to come in off the OOS waitlist (which would be even more than that turning down offers as they over admit in the rolling portion) I just don't know how quickly that would happen... probably not fast enough for me to hang around and find out, but who knows. I'll see where I stand on the 24th (when waitlisters are supposed to say if they're in or out) and make a decision then.

Whoa! When you are on the waitlist, they make YOU tell them whether or not you want to stay on the waitlist. Dat ain't right.

I went to the Wall of Fame while I was waiting for your reply and new that Ann Arbor would be calling you. I went to debate camp there when I was in high school and while I didn't find Ann Arbor very accessible to a 15 year-old, I bet it's pretty great for med students. 🙂

i just noticed that they disabled the online secondary application (i cant login anymore). maybe they have made their decisions and reset everything for next year! If you are an iowa person and have a hawkid, try to log into ICON. When you are accepted they sign you up for a course called PreM1 where you can look for roommates and stuff. Not sure if they do it immediatly but if you are registered for the class you might find out before you get the letter! I dont have it on mine though 👎

Hey guys! In regards to the HawkID issue, does every applicant get an ID or just people who are accepted. I ask because I was playing around on the site and when looking into the ISIS site, I requested my HawkID and it gave me one. I do not know what to think, though. It may have something to do with the application, but I am not sure. I do not want to jump ahead and assume things. I hope to get a letter by tomorrow or Monday the latest. Any input?

Oh boy well you are gonna need to ask someone who was rejected to try and sign up...but the reason they gave us hawkid's was so we could access ISIS and ICON...if I were you I would see if your hawkid can access ICON and if you are plugged into the pre-1 communications board. If you can get in there you might be getting good news soon...or when they set this up they did it in a lazy manner and went ahead and subscribed all those who interviewed. Check out ICON though...

Oh and ISIS is pretty worthless for incoming M1's...I think they originally wanted us to be able to track the progress of our official transcripts etc. but it fell through because they ended up sending us an e-mail saying the only way we could check our status was to call the Iowa admissions office to see if all of our stuff was recieved. So who knows....but if "pre-m1 communications" is up in ICON for you...thats a very good sign

On any of their communications, were you able to see the username of the other email addys? ([email protected]...)

I seem to be in the system, I mean I have a HawkID 😕

Any news on the hawid mistery?
any non-accepted applicants have a hawkid too?

I don't want to wait 'til monday 🙁

Nothing here. Sorry!

I'm also waiting to hear back from iowa and also have found that I have a hawkid after using the look-up feature on their website. Any wait-listed or other non-accepted applicants willing to check if they have hawid's as well and help out a few anxious applicants?? thanks!

I included the link for the look-up site to make things easier.

I'm waitlisted In-State in the late 30's. I just checked and I do have a HawkID. So it must not be going solely to those that were outright accepted.

What do you guys think of my chances? I've got my fingers crossed :scared:

OOS Alternate: A LARGE NUMBER 🙁

Anyone know how deep the OOS list has gone in the past? Thanks in advance!

(ps. I do have a HawkID as well)

I think you posted that they gave out 161 OOS acceptances for 45 spots. That's pretty encouraging.

Just got my letter--OOS waitlist #19. I also have a hawkID. For the stats on usnews it would seem that a large number of OOS on the waitlist will get in. I liked Iowa a lot but I am probably headed to Michigan with SailCrazy.

Yeah...there is some hope alive...but trying to reconcile that with the 170 counted on the e-mail list and how many OOS over-acceptances that might represent is tricky! 😱

I hope I am wrong....but if they have already accepted 170 total (via the address count above) and they did accept ~30 more this week...that maybe makes ~200 out of ~290 for both IS and OOS...or about 70% of total acceptances. So...my OOS wild guess is: 161 - (0.70 x 161) = 48 ball-park get accepted from the OOS list. I could be completely wrong there! 😱 I'd be more hopeful if that 170 number was a bit smaller!!! 😱

Do any of you know if it is possible to establish Iowa residency for an OOS student? Somehow this question evaded me on interview day. Obviously if it is possible it would be a definite plus in Iowa's corner.

You have to live in Iowa at least a year before school starts and also not be a full time student durning that time.

Well I just got my rejection letter. Out of state, fwiw. It's funny that with all the other rejections I am desensitized and didn't care much about iowa's. It seems pessimism and hardness of heart really pay off.

As the above guy mentioned you have to be in IA a year without being a traditional student. At my IA interview they mentioned that some people take a year off to do research after their 2nd year and this allows them to establish residency for their last two years. Of course this means 5 years to getting the MD.

Hello guys

I also have a HawkID and just got rejected

sorry to bust anyone's bubble, best wishes to the U of Iowa entering class 😍

Congats too all who were accepted or waitlisted. I look forward to meeting you all in the fall.

They really do move a lot of people from the wait lists, so if Iowa is a school you liked, don't give up......

I can't offer any input on the HawkID issues as I was an undergrad and now work at Iowa, so my ID has been with me for years.

Hey…well…here’s a reach for all of us alternates...I just need a bunch of accepted and alternate folks who are not totally committed and such to just pull out so that my extreme motivation to pick up and move my little crew to Iowa City can shine!!! (just envision two little boys all dressed in Hawkeye colors!) 😀 👍

OK…those of you who are at all unsure about Iowa…that’s your cue! 😍 👍

I also know some who deferred their acceptance a year and worked/lived in IA for that period with the same results (except they paid in-state tuition all 4 years).

A lot better chance than me! They tell me I'm #95 on the OOS list! Might as well have rejected me! (I'm guessing there's 100 people on the list or something, I'm right at the bottom)

VERY HIGH chance of getting in, I would think. I also assume that the most waitlist movement happens between the beginning of may to the end of June as people choose their one school or other choose one but get pulled off the waitlist somewhere else and withdraw from their first choice.

100%. They should expect a letter in the next week or so.

I was around that number last year and got an acceptance letter within a week of my waitlist letter.

I have been reading a few of these Iowa treads for a couple days now and thought it was time to chime in. I was rejected from Iowa as an OOS last year, but have since established residency here and found out Thursday that I was in-state alternate #42. There's not much to do now but wait. I just pray they run through the alternate list like it's water.

While it may not be applicable, if anyone has any anecdotal stories about how they were or heard of someone getting in after being that far down on the list, I could use them.

Good luck to all of those still waiting and Congrats to those of you who are in!

got a rejection letter today...i gotta say that iowa is as blunt as they come but its all good...

I haven't heard of anyone getting off the in-state wait list in the 40's (from SDN searching), but they wouldn't have put you on the waitlist if they were 100% sure it wouldn't go that far. I think the normal in-state range is 20-30. But if I were you, I would call the admissions office and ask how far into the waitlist they have gone in the last five years. I assume there is a lot of year to year variation on how the it moves depending on interest in other schools and deferrals. As others have mentioned, the major waitlist movement will occur in May/June. So, you will really know where you stand in June. Best of luck.

So, for oos applicants, what number is a good waitlist number? 20's? 40's? Just got waitlisted oos, and I'm wondering what to think about it. 😳

I'm not good at math and no nothing baout how this process works, but if they typically accept roughly 150 OOS for roughly 50 spots, I would think you would have a good chance in the 20's or 30's. What was your number?

Non-resident Alternate List high 30s position. I kinda found out late since I just got back home. I also got an acceptance from U Wisconsin so I am sooooooooooooo happy. It was soo stressful to just open the letters since they were thin and small.
now I cant stop saying "yay" all day 😀 😛 :

I plan on staying on the list cuz I liked Iowa a lot and would attend if something nice were to happen!

Good Luck to all the fellow waitlisters :luck:

It sounds like ~100-110 OOS's have already been accepted, so about 60 accepted folks have to withdraw before the waitlist moves. The track record though is that 150-160 OOS's are eventually accepted in total to fill the seats in August. However, the highest *initial* number eventually accepted from the waitlist could be higher than the ~ 50 implied by the above stats due to folks on the waitlist withdrawing prior to being accepted. There is probably a 30-40 person range of *initial* numbers that get accepted in the summer…all dependent on the luck of the year. So...buckle up! I'm gonna need some major help! 😍

:luck: to everyone!

Just a little story to brighten you oos wait list people's day:

A few years ago the husband of the lab tech in my lab was called the day before orientation to attend class off of the oos wait list. As she no longer works here, I cannot ask what number he was, I'd assume pretty low. So if you really liked Iowa, hold on!! They could call you up to the day before orientation.....

Kids are resiliant like that.

So, does nayone else get the feeling that Iowa was not so truthful when they said that the majority of acceptances would come from this March 15 group? I specifically remember coming back from the interview and telling my husband that I would probably be waiting til March since they didn't accept many people right off the bat and wait until March to fill the class.

Hey guys,

This might soound a lil obsessive..lol...but..how early is too early to start calling admissions about any waitlist movement...
