So, does nayone else get the feeling that Iowa was not so truthful when they said that the majority of acceptances would come from this March 15 group? I specifically remember coming back from the interview and telling my husband that I would probably be waiting til March since they didn't accept many people right off the bat and wait until March to fill the class.
From an OOS standpoint, it is pretty much what I exected. I was told that they over-admit during the rolling process (so there are no OOS acceptances on March 15, only waitlist and rejection notifications.)

I really had no idea what the residents should expect...

This thread's been a little lonely...

Hey all,

I'm in-state and I will be withdrawing soon. For a few of you who are high up on the in-state waitlist, maybe this will give you more hope! I will probably be going to Mich with Sail, but Iowa rocks hard and it was a tough decision.

Good luck to all!
OrganLibrarian is right, we'll probably be in Ann Arbor together... and right about the fact that Iowa is great! 👍 As such, if I can see a financial aid offer from Iowa within a reasonable timeframe (they have my FAFSA,) I'll definitely check it out. FYI: I've progressed 10 places on the OOS list, moving from the high 30s to the high 20s.

Hey Sail..... I am assuming the waitlist movement is due to people not interested in remaining on the waitlist (3/24 deadline) rather than accepted OOS deciding to go elsewhere... is that your take on this? With the OOS over acceptances this year, do you think that they will even touch the OOS waitlist? I was under the impression that 50-60 OOS accepted applicants had to decide to go elsewhere before the first OOS wait-lister was accepted....that is, Iowa overaccepted by 50-60......but this is based entirely from "reliable SDN sources".....

Your thoughts, Sail? or anyone with more insight here?

EMET_BUTS, I'll try not to take offense at your implication that there might be others with more insight than I!

I would agree, at this point waitlist movement is almost certainly a result of those who are declined their spots or withdrew from the waitlist, not from the school granting acceptances off the waitlist.

My info on admissions #s is based directly on what I was told on interview day, not from SDN rumor: For in-state students, they under-admit during the rolling part, and only use the waitlist sparingly. For OOS, they over-admit during the rolling part, but still take a good chunk from the waitlist.

My anticipation (based on my own specualtion, not adcom info) is that by May 15 there is a chance that they'll be pulling people from the waitlist. (How great a chance, I don't really know...)

anyone else on the instate waitlist and just wish that peopel would decide already....soo we could move up more than just one spot ...*sigh*

Earlier this week the OOS over-accepted list was at 50, and they were still resolving how many alternates wanted to remain on the waitlist as some folks had not replied with an answer (which suggests that they do not wish to remain).

When I spoke to admissions, 24 people above me had declined a spot on the alternate list...and it sounded like that would grow upon the above resolution. So, still 50 to go before the first OOS alternate is admitted...but the waitlist eventually does become rather active.

Best of :luck: to all of us alternates! 👍

Sail, no one with more insight than you.... that was why I asked! (though perhaps it could be construed another way.... sorry).

So... 50 more before the wait list. Thanks for that info, 2Bs.

Good luck everyone! :luck: :luck:

Hi Sail Crazy,
how did you find out about the progression on the OOS list? I was also in the high 30s OOS list. Im wondering if perhaps I could have moved up along with you?

I will be sending off my withdraw letter on Monday. My acceptance came with a nice scholarship too. So Sail, I hoe you get it cuz you'd be a great ambassdor for Iowa!

Did everyone else get the confirmation email with your updated alternate list position, info on how to change your email address, and the recommendation to submit your FAFSA?

If so, how much has the in-state waitlist moved?

The in-state list hasn't really moved. I moved up one spot in the email update. I really hope it picks up once the financial aid info starts to come out.

speaking of FA, does anyone know when the info comes out? I sent my info off in Feb and have yet to hear anything beyond forms being received.

Here is the crappy part...it doesn't come out until late April...most of the scholarships are handed out then unless you were one of the few folks where the adcomm awarded a scholarship (almost entirely OOS). I was told you can e-mail Penny in financial aid and they might be able to give you a rough estimate of your aid package if you need it to make a decision (ie they have an idea of the order in which scholarships will go out). I'm busy playing the fin aid game with them right now and they are really frustrating me...this is truly a never ending process

HA!! I am quite tired from all my hoeing!!

I am #59 as of now on the OOS alternate list. I really liked the school when I interviewed, so naturally I am concerned with potential waitlist movement. Does anyone know roughly what my chances are?

When I interviewed, the person said that last year they went down to the last person on the OOS alternate list (ie. #100). I imagine you'll see a lot of movement during the entire month of May since there're probably a lot of out-of-staters who are dawdling in dropping the acceptance/waitlist, waiting to hear from other fancy schools, and just plain can't make up their minds. I fit into the first category: my waitlist number is in the high teens and I'm probably going to withdraw in the next couple of weeks. Not trying to be a jerk, just not totally sure what I want to do. annoying, I know...

Hello people,

I also sent my withdrawal letter to Iowa about a week ago, although I have yet to receive confirmation. I was OOS and had a very *nice* scholarship. Hope that it goes to one of you that really liked the school!

Actually, I just spoke with Julie and she says she has a pile of about 150 FA packages that should be sent out (at the latest) next Monday. So, if you are in the lucky 150 then you should get your packet next week!

I'm in your alternate # neighborhood...and I give myself a 50/50 chance of a late 👍 based on the history of the highest initial alternate numbers admitted since they started this method.

Best of :luck: !!!

I hope so......since I'm in state, I doubt that I will be getting much aid, espically since I held a full time job this past year. Thanks for the info!!

Here's a bump for the thread since there was an Alternate list email update today. Does anyone else feel like the IS list is barely moving? I was looking at an old Iowa waitlist thread from a couple years ago and someone that started at 26 was at 16 by late April. So far, I've moved up 2 spots. It's probably still too early to expect significant movement, but, hopefully things will pick up after May 15.

Does anyone know if the OOS waitlist has moved at all due to people withdrawing?

TinyHineyRikki said:

There really hasn't been much movement for me since the first e-mail update, and there are still quite a few over-admits left before the first alternate is accepted. Looks like we have a few more weeks to wait before much action goes down. I'm optimistic about late May-early June though!

I just received an update email this week and saw no additional movement. I had previously moved up 10 spots from the high 30s to the hish 20s, but there's been no change since the original "do you want to be on the waitlist" deadline.

no change since the first status update position. Got another email recently but was the same OOS spot as I was in the first email.

I forget now, what was the grading system used in the preclinical years at Iowa? pass/fall or A,B,C...? and also do third and fourth years do all rotations in Iowa City or do they move around a lot?

Honors/Near-Honors/Pass/Fail

Some rotations (community-based family medicine, internal med, etc.) usually require some travel to other cities and towns in Iowa.

You will be joining us I'm pretty sure...I know three residents who are headed elsewhere at this point...there were some great resident applicants this year so don't worry about number 12. If my 3 don't overlap you are what at #7 now...congrats...

After second visit I just don't know...I think the folks who I know who dropped did so before March 15th...and if you want my gut feeling they accepted people for those slots before setting the waitlist...I sent my withdrawal letter yesterday so you've got one position that its gonna move, but I've got to be honest with the larger than normal amount of Iowa and Iowa State students headed to Iowa this year I really think waitlist movement for residents isn't gonna go anywhere near the 30 it has in the past..

I called the admissions office just now. From what I understand, they still have 28 regular admissions (i.e., straight-forward acceptances) on the non-resident (OOS) list before they take people off the waitlist.

Can anybody else confirm this?

That's about 20 less than a couple weeks ago.

Non-resident Alternate List high 30s position. I kinda found out late since I just got back home. I also got an acceptance from U Wisconsin so I am sooooooooooooo happy. It was soo stressful to just open the letters since they were thin and small.
now I cant stop saying "yay" all day 😀 😛 :

I plan on staying on the list cuz I liked Iowa a lot and would attend if something nice were to happen!

Good Luck to all the fellow waitlisters :luck:

I'm new to this, so if you have acceptances and have to drop all but one on May 15th, you can still stay on the alternate lists of other schools? I thought you had to make the final choice by then?

Does anyone know if 28 people left before the list is a lot or atypical for this close to may 15th?

The list should start moving... I (OOS) received an email yesterday... stating that they knew I had multiple acceptances... blah blah blah... my letter withdrawing from the school went out on Monday...
Good Luck!

Are there any Iowa residents out there who are accepted to Iowa but are thinking about withdrawling? Just wondering if there is any chance the alternate list will start moving anytime soon.

I got confirmation from Cathy Solow today that my withdrawal is official 🙁 its kind of bittersweet but I'm glad someone out there gets the opportunity to attend a fantastic school like Iowa...hope it helps.

Thanks snobored18. This is highly appreciated 🙂

I also have withdrawn my acceptance to Iowa (I'm in-state). Good luck to all of you guys - SailCrazy and I are bummed that we don't get to meet all of you next year...we'll just have to be faux-enemies during the Michigan/Iowa football game this fall! :meanie:

hey did u w/draw recently?

I am wondering how many OOS accepts have to drop before waiting list folks get to hear word of first movement? Anyone else fear that the early over-acceptances might change the dynamic this year so that the few or none of the OOS alternates are needed? :scared:

Would be fun to be a Hawkeye next year! 🙂 🙂

I just spoke with the people from Iowa and they said that they have 17 people overadmitted at this point before the waitlist starts. Does anyone know if this is alot, a little, or average for this time of year?

Hopefully...all of those OOS overaccepts (originally about 60 a couple of months ago) and more are getting used up about now! 👍

I didn't get the impression that there were more total of those this year when discussing my number and chances with admissions back in March...but I don't know. Anyone know if those ~60 over accepts is more than what they've had in the past?

Tiny, 2 Boys...

You both are amazing.... fast info!
I did not understand the overaccept part of the equation in regards to last year... my impression was that this was a new thing started this year.... however, I have nothing to really base this on.

That 17 places remain before May 15 is both exciting and scary.

Best of luck :luck: :luck: to you both.
