Hello Everyone,

I just found this forum and decided to join and gather some advice from you all. So up until very recently I planned to go to graduate school to be a physician assistant; however, I had an experience that made me really question my previous plan and after some research in veterinary medicine I see a future that could combine more of my interest than PA school.

One catch is that I have no vet experience! I've applied for a vet assistant job and I'll continue to apply for jobs (although with the economy not many clinics are hiring) or gladly volunteer my time, but compared to some applicants will this be enough? I mean is this crazy?

My cum. GPA is 3.41, Science GPA 3.55, last 45hrs GPA 3.82. I haven't taken the GRE or GRE Biology Test.

So I am basically asking for opinions on my situation. I would really like to start grad school next year as I am turning 26 this Nov, and I would like to move forward in my life. Thank you for reading this and for any advice you all have.

You won't be starting veterinary school in the US next year. Applications for almost every US vet school to start in Fall 09 were due 2 weeks ago.

Overall you idea isn't too crazy though. If you spent the next year getting experience you could probably apply next cycle(to start Fall 2010). You would also need to check and make sure you have met all the requirements. Vet schools tend to have a few odd-ball ones.

Thanks David594. I meant that I wanted to apply to next year's cycle, not begin next year, sorry about that.

I wrote this last night, but the site went down about the time I wanted to post it. :smack:

Well, the application cycle for the class that would matriculate in 2009 has already ended, so you would be looking at 2010-2014. You will definitely need vet experience, as well as a vet willing and capable of writing you a letter of recommendation.

My advice would be to spend some time at a clinic and get a feel for the work - that's the best way to know if it's for you or not. If you are still interested, you'll want to look around more and figure out what you need to apply. Different schools have different pre-requisite classes, for one. Only two schools actually require the biology GRE; others only want the general GRE.

You aren't crazy at all. We have many people on here much older than you that are just getting into it. Some have backgrounds in accounting, others in computer science... really, all sorts of people that have decided that vet med is for them.

Could I ask what experience made you question your original plan?

At any rate, whatever you choose, good luck. 🙂
