Kansas City University (KCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Secondary Submitted: 9/21
Complete: 10/15
Interview: 11/13

Also to respond to the question asked earlier... Accepted Students Day is going to be on Friday, March 4th 2016.

If I may ask, where did you find out about the date for accepted student's day?

Wait listed =(. Does anyone know how the waitlist work at KCU? How likely am I to be picked up from the waitlist?

II invite yesterday via email. Anyone know if its still early in the game or are they mostly full?

I'm trying to look for stats on how many applicants, interviews, acceptances, etc. but I cannot find. Anyone have a link?

Just finished interviewing today. Amazing school! Wish I hadn't been so ramped up in my interview, but I couldn't contain my excitement!

Congrats! Mind sharing your stats and when you were complete?

Is there a Facebook group yet for accepted students? Something like KCU-COM class of 2020?

Hope this is the right place to ask, but did anyone attend KCU's Masters in Biosciences program then apply to the KCU med school?

I'd like to hear a bit about the Master's, and ask a few questions.

If you'd rather not clutter up this thread and have a bit of time, perhaps you could PM me.

Thanks to everyone!

First II here yesterday, so excited! (LizzyM ~67) Hoping I still have a chance at acceptance given that their class seems pretty full already...

II just now!!! I called them this morning and mentioned that it had been 4 weeks since I received the complete email. I was put on hold for a minute and then was told they just completed the review of my application and that I would be receiving an II later today. And here it is!!!

About 2 weeks ago, I am like 90% sure there were more than 12 faculty mentors for research on KCU's website.

Now there is only 8. Bad sign?

We have a collab with KCHSI which is a consortium of investigators at different isn't such as KU Med, MRI Global, Stowers Medical research inst.

I wouldn't be worried. Plenty of research opps around here still!

Also wanted to add: For the first year, it will be very difficult to participate in research as you will trying to figure out how to handle the course load. This is OK! You want to do well in your classes first before partaking in any sort of research because 10 publications wont ake up for poor class ranking or a poor step score. I just found my footing with the curriculum and will be shooting to start research in the next month.

Secondary Submitted 9/4; Complete 9/29; II 10/15; Interview 11/5; Accepted 11/17

Question for current students: Does anyone have any reasons on why NOT to attend KCUMB? Finding the pro's for KCUMB have been easy but I'm also very interested in areas where students believe that the school has room for improvement. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

This is a common theme with D.O. schools, but I'd say KCU could improve on having research opportunities at its institution. It's tough to have a ton of research when you're not attached to a big university, but I think KCU is doing a great job and like @AlteredScale mentioned, they have a ton of collaborations and are really improving--eventually, they'll have a D.O./PhD program, but they're not quite there yet.

I'm wondering how feasible it is to do research in the first two years with this curriculum? Summer would be difficult too since it's only 5 weeks off.

It's very difficult, but if you're trying to get a competitive residency and haven't done a ton of research in undergrad, med school is the place to crank it out!

but if its very difficult, is waiting till 3rd year okay?

I know people that do research electives in MS3--I think it's a lot easier to find time when it's actually built into your schedule. But maybe a current KCU student could speak more to this.

Anyone know what happens during the Accepted Students' Day in spring next year? Do most people bring family along or go solo?

I ended up going alone last year thinking maybeee @AlteredScale would show up (LOL ️) but yeah, it was chill. I kinda wished I had someone there (most people brought family or a significant other and some people brought a friend) but since I was alone, I just hung out with the first years at the time and asked all my questions haha. It was cool, pretty informative and they give you some more details on what to expect come August. Plus I bought myself some other shirts and KCU things

It's definitely not the end of the world if you can't make it as most of the information will be repeated during orientation but I was super excited to come back and explore KC when I wasn't incredibly stressed out haha.

Just to reiterate what was said earlier about accepted students day, here's the e-mail I just got from Patti:

"Hi insert applicant name here,

Congratulations again on your recent acceptance to Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences - College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCU-COM). As an accepted student, you are invited back on campus, Friday, March 4th 2016, along with your family, to better familiarize yourself with Kansas City and our university. So make sure to save the date, March 4th on your calendar.

More information will be forthcoming in mid-January including RSVP instructions, but please mark March 4th on your calendar to come back to KCU for this exciting event.

We look forward to welcoming you to our University and to the profession of osteopathic medicine."

Hey, for the dual degree programs (ex DO-MBA), I'm just curious what the additional tuition costs will be as compared to doing just the DO. Is it as simple as adding the tuition for each of the programs separately? Any current students know?

Accepted a few days ago and super excited! Does anyone know when the seat deposit is due? I know they will send me something in 5-7 days but just curious

It says on rockhurst's website (through KCU) http://www.rockhurst.edu/helzberg-s...are-leadership-mba/tuition-and-financial-aid/ - $34,761 total. I think that you're saving money considering a traditional stand-alone MBA costs $50k+ but I'm not sure.

Edit: that's on top of the DO tuition, obviously

Not necessarily until Dec. 15th. If you were accepted after Nov. 15, you have 30 days. Not a big difference, but if you end up waiting until the last minute thinking it was Dec. 15th and your 30 days had passed, you would be in some trouble haha

Does anyone know how the health insurance KCU offers works? Not sure what this "needle-stick" insurance means on their website. Thanks!

They have specific deals worked with some companies but nothing spectcaular. The needle stick insurance is guranteed for students on campus who accidentally stick themselves but it does not protect for anything outside of campus.

Can any current students comment on the large class size at KCUMB? Does anyone feel like it takes away from learning in anatomy lab or anything? I'm just curious as that's about the only con I can pick out of this school lol

Doesn't effect me in anyway. They split up the schedule so there were only 4 of us at each dissection tank at a time. The only downfall to that many students is I don't know everyone. I see people every week that are in my class and I have no idea who they are.

Great! Thanks so much for the reply. Look forward to being in KC next year!

Do any of you know if the orientation date has been officially set yet? I know it's a while out but my family is just trying to plan ahead.

The academic year/orientation for first-year students starts on 7/25/2016

Resource: Osteopathic Medical College Information Book (MSAR equivalent for DO schools)

Dude you are on a freakin roll. You might have to make a decision soon. is the deposite due 12/14?
DMU said I have until the 23 of December. But KCU said that I'll get another email in 5-7 business days and it will tell me how to secure my seat. So I don't know yet. How long do you have to make your decision?
