No no no no no. I meant you guys entertain me with your stories. Most of those questions are actually answered in the Salerni Survival guide which you guys will get in July or so.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I told an old man to take a hike because he asked me: "Excuse me, young man, where is the men's room?"

 did he realize his mistake, was he embarassed? That's hilarious!

Patzan,

So how'd you lose the end of your left thumb? Oh, and I saw your Russian thread. Were you born in Russia/have you lived there? My sister's exboyfriend was Russian and so for a while I hung out with a big group of Russians; they were all so much fun to be around and I miss them.

My brother and I were smashing pennies on the sidewalk with hammers when I was nine (he was eleven). His flipped over by me, and being the nice guy I am, I reached to pick it up. You get the rest of the story...

I lived in Russia for a few years (five years ago), so it isn't my native language, but I learned to speak it, although it is fading a bit.

Patzs, you didn't interview with a tall white male at USC, did you?? I'm having a semi-flashback.

This whole time I thought that you were Asian  (which isn't as bad as thinking that you were a girl).

Thanks. Do you know what the abbreviation for that channel is, which channel is it for you? I tried finding it, but I couldn't. Maybe I don't have that channel.

Jay, are you going to 'SC next year? Will you be at the reception this Friday?

Don't know the abbreviation, but for me (Comcast) it was channel 226.

I'm not sure about next year, it's between USC and Wash U at this point. I think I'll flip a coin. 😉 I will definitely be at the 2nd look this Friday. See you all there!

Hey all --

Any musicians coming to USC in the fall? Just wondering, cuz I'm leaving my band back here at NU and it makes me sad ... wondering if anyone is interested in starting up one here. :-D

Dara

Does anyone have any thoughts about maintaining EMT certification during medical school at USC?

I'd really like to keep my certification active, but I'd be curious to hear if others think this is a waste of time.

Also, does anyone have any specific advice on how to obtain reciprocity in LA County? The department of health website doesn't really help too much besides saying they grant it, but in various unnamed cases you need to do various extra things to get it.

Thanks for the input!

Not sure if I'll be there in the fall, but I am a musician (guitarist). I had a band all throughout college, but we had to split up a few months ago. I really really really miss playing shows, working on songs, doing the whole LA rock scene thing. I was actually thinking of starting up a new group once I get settled in at school next year. What is your instrument/musical style?

No, I interviewed with a 4th year (and female), but I think I may have seen you on the tour (Kirsten ((?)) pointed out a few of her friends to us).

I think he was hard of hearing (?)

I have a few more weird mistaken/fake identity stories...

Years after I stopped living with my parents, I got a call from the Chronicle or whatever asking me,"Oh hello, young man, we're from the Chronicle. We were wondering if your parents would be interested in a subscription..." I told them my parents have been dead for over forty years and they're buried beneath the house. That stopped them from ever calling my apartment.

This one is about my mom's degee of charitability. A couple of nuns came to our door and tries to sell her some books. My mom says in an extremely bad made-up accent, "So sorry. Lady of the house not here. I'm just poor house-keeper."

Jalby, Did you ever give the tour? I had a tall white guy give my tour. I am wondering if that was you.

Sorry Trekkie, I have no idea about this. Are you going to the reception on Friday, I am pretty sure that you said you wern't? If you are going you could ask there. Oh, and did you choose your screename because you're really into Star Trek? I was just wondering.

Oh and guess what everyone, I just talked to my mom and she's getting a 6-week old brown lab puppy tonight! I want to think of a name. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the pictures. Is that your wife, she is beautiful! Those pictures make me want to quit my job and go traveling until med school. I think I will at least go to Tahoe for a little while before school starts.

call it "dammit" because she will be saying that a lot.

 Very true. I just got done raising a puppy and so I know all about that. *worried about getting any of my deposit back when I move out*

Nope Patsy. I thought you were a woman. Maybe after the new student reception I'll put up a link to my website (maybe)

No reception for me, unfortunately. April 23 is my last day of classes and, well, a big party day. 😀 Hopefully everyone will report back here on how everything goes. As far as the EMT stuff goes, if worse comes to worst I'll just wait until I get to LA to figure it out. I am getting the feeling that it will be a pain to get my certification there, but I would be sad to let it just lapse.

In regards to my screenname, yes it is because I like Star Trek, although that was much more the case 8 years ago when someone else chose this name for me (she set up my first Hotmail account with it). Now I feel like a dork and was hoping to get a new online identity before med school but can't think of a good screenname. 🙁

Congratulations on your mom's new puppy. Puppies rock! I wish I could have a dog in med school, but dogs require way too much attention, and no way am I settling for some crappy-ass cat or goldfish or something.

That is my beautiful wife. We took a trip to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole last summer. The first few are of our honeymoon in San Diego. I just bought our tickets to Hawaii in June! We figured we'd do something cool while we have the chance.

Hey guys -

Does anyone here know where we can park during our visit this Friday? (aside from putting in a bunch of quarters in a meter)

Thanks 🙂

I'm excited for re-visit day. I'm not familiar with the L.A. area at all and don't have the foggiest idea of what Monterrey Hills or South Pasadena are like.
I'm supposed to fly out of town shortly after the reception but would be willing to take a later flight if someone with a car would like to drive around those areas.
Anyone planning on driving around to look at prospective places to live after the re-visit day??

Yeah, bump on the parking question.

Do we get free parking on 2nd-look day like we did for the interview? Or are we on our own this time around? Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks.

When people ask where the med school is, what do I tell them? "Somewhere in or close to LA" is about as specific as I can get. I had no idea where I was when I was there.

I'd tell them it's practically *IN* downtown LA by the I-5 exit. I also tell people you could see County from the freeway. The average Joe Schmoe in LA would reply, "Oh... yeah... that big beat up building by the freeway..." Soon to not be the one in effect thanks to the "new" County building. 😉
For added dramatic effect one may add, "it's in East LA" - that'll get ooohs and aaahs from people who have heard about it only because of the LA Riots.

just say east los angeles. near downtown la.

This is what I tell people. Occassionally I mention Cheech and Chong as well.

😀

32 hours left til some of you guys exist in real life.

Hello Everybody!!!!

I am new to studentdoctor but I am really excited to be going to Keck next year to start learnin some medicine. I'm almost 100% sure I'm gonna go to KECK!!!!

Anyways, I won't be at the reception but how did you all decide to apply/go to Keck?

For anyone wondering where to park tomorrow, I just called and they said to park in the same structure where we parked on interview day. I believe it was right at the corner of Zonal and Biggy. They said to tell the attendant that you're there for the Accepted Student Reception and there shouldn't be a charge.

What are people wearing tomorrow? I figure I'm already accepted, so I'll just show up in my normal garb- leather pants and mohawk.... Hmm, maybe business casual would be a better idea?

I think I know the person you're referring to. I was surprised at how most people ended up wearing nicer clothes (Not neccessarily business casual, but definitely not casual clothes)

That student panel was pretty good.

Haha. I take it you were on it. So you are that Josh. Nice.

On a side note, I drove around Monterey Hills (or Hill as the student panel was quick to clarify) and I was so impressed with how beautiful the area is. Maybe the apts are only on one hill, but the undeveloped hills around it were GORGEOUS!! Do students go running/hiking on them? The one to the left of Via Marisol looked like it was covered in trails. I can't wait to live there!

Superstarz, I think that you were the only person from SDN that I didn't meet yesterday.

Yeah, I looked at Monterey Hills and Pasadena yesterday after the reception. I am definately leaning towards S. Pasadena to be in a more "town" environment, rather than just a purely residential area--but, I was very impressed with how nice M. Hills was. The apartment building I looked at was hella nice and hella cheaper than my current apt., so I am stoked! Hopefully they will have a unit available come the beginning of August.

I had a great time at 'SC yesterday and it was cool to meet a bunch of you guys.

snowbear

Hope you all had a good time at the reception. I met a couple of you, and y'all were cool people. I was the MSI wearing yellow board shorts. Good luck with making your final decisions.

Anyone want to give a brief report on the second look day? What were your impressions? Did you learn anything you think the rest of us should know?

The talks were pretty cool, but what I really liked was the "Shadowing." Too bad we didn't get to see the specific specialties we indicated on the evite; I guess it would be hard to cram ~25 people into the ER.

Any of you guys deciding on USC over a UC? I've been thinking of UCI, but after getting a second look at LAC I think I'm pretty much sold on USC.

Anyone going for MD/MBA???

How does S.Pasadena compare to Mont.Hills on price?

From the reception and this forum- it looks like the KSOM c/o 2008 is gonna be pretty close. It's months before school starts and already everyone is getting close

Did they mention at the second look when the new LAC+USC hospital is going to be finished?

I was the person leading the ER group (all 3 of them) and the person we were supposed to meet wasn't there. But someone gave us a great tour and I think really swayed 2 of the three people.

What I've found interesting is the difference between this years second look and last years. Last year, there was a ton of people who was deciding between UCI and USC. This year, I didn't meet a single one. There was one person who was deciding between UCSF and us. I was shocked. But right now we have more people holding acceptances on this date of the year than any year in the past.

Jalby said:

say it isn't so!!!!!
so that probably means there won't be much love for us waitlisters..... 🙁

Ok it's final- I'm going to USC for sure (200%!) Sorry Camstah! I talked to a third year about residency matches and clinical experience. I don't think UCI compares in that area for the specialties I'm looking at.

I think the hospital will be finished 2007; we will be the first ones using it!
