I was one of the two who went into the Dr.'s office to see the dementia patient.
(I had the short dark hair, not the long blonde hair)

So you must be one of the two who didn't see the dementia patient. I'd love to hear how the epilepsy clinic was. Do you have shoulder-length hair, or long hair?

You know how we met up in larger groups before we split off into our specialties--I think it was like Groups 25-30, or something. I think I might have been in the pre-group with you neuro girls. I was in the two-girl group psychiatry.

i think i met only snowbear and patzan in person. I was wearing big jackie-O style black sunglasses and a black dress. I am also Asian. I'm kind of tall (?)

I ended up in an IM group. I almost passed out while waiting for the attending cause he was half an hour late... 🙁

the epilepsy clinic was really interesting... all three of the patients i saw only spoke spanish... and the doctor i was shadowing knew very little... it was sad to see him struggling to communicate with the mother of one of the patients... the pharmacy had screwed up her prescription and she hadn't been taking the right dose for the past month...

makes me want to break out my spanish text book and start studying now...

I totally know what you mean. For the longest time I have been saying that I want to practice my Spanish but I didn't really take any steps to get better. About a month ago I was at a doctor's appointment and there was this lady that only spoke Chinese and nobody at the office could understand her. Finally, they called a nurse that spoke Chinese and I thought that it was so cool that this nurse was able to open up communication with the patient. This totally inspired me to be more active in learning Spanish again and I hope to really get a handle on it before MS3. County will provide more than enough opportunities for us to use and strengthen our Spanish 😍

That reminds me - everyone who's interested in the Medical Spanish class that may be offered next year if it gets funding should write to Dr. Quinn and tell her!
(I was talking with her about it on Friday, and she asked that I send an email so that she could show the guy who will determine whether or not it gets funding that there is student interest.)

The more student interest, the more likely the funding, probably.

I think that email sent to [email protected] will reach Dr. Quinn.

So I DID meet someone from SDN on 2nd look day!! I was the OTHER girl who almost passed out!! It was hot and we were standing like statues for what felt like forever!! I was soo embarassed.

i was deciding between uc davis and usc... but the second look day definitely confirmed that usc is the place for me!

Univ. of Rochester has offered me a scholarship of $95,000 over four years. USC is definately an incredible school but $95,000 is a lot of dough and the Univ. of Chicago is the Univ. of Chiacgo. Please share with me your thoughts. I would appreciate any jewels of wisdom that can be spared.

Take away issues with money and reputation because you'll still have a debt either way and all medical schools in the US are good enough to get you where you wanna go if you are capable enough (and if you are deciding on these schools you must be 🙂 ). As far as the people you will work with, the place you will live, and the possible experience you will get, where would you be happiest?

That's what helped me.

Oh and Mikki, I remember you now. Glad you picked USC!!! UCD is a great school too, but the Med center here just doesn't compare to LAC.

They all seem like pretty solid schools, in terms of reputation. I am no residency director, but if you want to go out of state for med school, I would think that U of Chicago might help you more in terms of securing a residency in Cali compared to Rochester. What is your financial position: do you have any money saved up, will your parents be helping out, do you mind having a lot of debt, will having a scholarship make you a lot more at ease? If you are intested in primary care, do you think that having a lot of debt may sway you into choosing a specialty?

Are they all P\F? What kind of hospitals are they associated with? Is working with a diverse patient base important to you? Do you want to have a lot of hands-on clincial experience in med school?

Just a couple of questions to think about that might help you in deciding.

Oh and one more thing, do you want a really awesome class? If so, choose 'SC!

Oh and did you guys read the LA Times article on the Latina woman, Cristina, who was accepted into our class? I almost started to cry after reading her story... BUt I'm really happy for her that all her efforts paid off in the end and she'll be one of us! 🙂 Yay!

A ton. I'd guess like 11 right now. As for the FP, I'm not sure about Germany. I think they said in the booooooring lecture that I sat through before the panel that is has to be in the US. You can do other rotations in Germany, though (electives)

I only have about nine more days of access to my favorite one in Houston, and I am not sure how I'll handle the withdrawal over the summer, I just need to hear that USC med school has a good, cheap boba place like two feet away.

i want to go usc cuz it's the closest to home...uci is great too, with the apparently good financial aid, etc, i'd have little debt when i graduate...too bad they didn't fricken interview me....usc did though....i was looking on mdapplicants, and it seems that usc interviews and accepts some people that get rejected from almost everywhere else...what's up with that? why won't they accept me then? poopy..... 😕

edit: i'm not saying that they shouldn't accept those people, but after looking at the gpa's and mcat scores and volunteer experiences of people who have gotten in, i just want to know where i went wrong...i feel similar to those who have gotten acceptances, so i just wonder, why? anyway, didn't mean to hijack this thread, carry on....

I'm really stuck trying to make the usc vs. uci decision. i apologize - because I know I'm not the first to post this dilemma on SDN.

- Seems like UCI does great on the boards and matches to some pretty competitive residency programs.
- Felt like UCI was pitched as a 'good life' with a supportive community while USC may have focused more on its curriculum and clinical experience.

A few questions:
- I got the impression that UCI teaches more toward Step I. Does USC help students out in deciphering what to focus on or not, or are they on their own for sorting that out?
- Testing. I'm wondering if academic performance in years 1 and 2 at USC is based on just 'a few big exams' that come at the end or if students are tested regularly along the way.
- Advantage. I'm thinking of doing emergency medicine or specializing in other fields. How much more of an advantage does one have coming from USC than a place like UCI? There is a lot of crossover in the match lists.

I had a great time at both re-visit days. I'm torn.

I don't know why I'm surfing the USC thread since I said my goodbye to this thread long ago but if you want to do emergency med, USC seems like the place to do it. Have you seen their emergency room? It looked like a scene straight out of E.R.

Personally, if I were in your shoes and if money weren't an issue, I'd pick USC with confidence.
