LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

Wow that quick a turn around?! Every other school has been taking forever. I have only heard back from one school. What are your stats like? I have 3.957 (cumulative), 3.92 (science) and 4.0 (non-science) and I got a 30R (all 10's) on my MCAT. I just want to get accepted somewhere and get this stressful process finished!
I assume you're talking to me. 3.51, 29Q

I've been extremely fortunate in this process, DO wise, at least . I found out from VCOM 10 days afterward, PCOM about 3 weeks, and not LECOM, probably 10 days or so.

Lucky you. Yea I was talking to anyone who has been granted an interview. Thanks for the reply.

they were the quickest out of any school so far for me too. I was complete in early-mid august, interview invite august 18, interviewed 10/6, accepted 10/14.. and the acceptance was through snail mail.. i thought 8 days was awesome post-interview noticE! good luck!

Hey all- I just got my acceptance letter today! I interviewed on 10/ 10 and got my letter 10/ 20!! I'm so excited to be one of the students of LECOM class of 2013!

Hey guys, LECOM is my top choice school and I got my wait-list decision (interview 10/1) last week. I am only applying DO b/c that is the type of medicine I want to practice but my stats (3.3, 34Q) are above average for the matriculants at even most MD schools.

Since DO schools often get the reputation of being a back-up to MD schools, do you guys think that many osteo schools will waitlist or reject those whose stats indicate they would easily or likely get into an allopathic school? I never explicitly stated I am only applying DO and nobody asked. Waitlist is nto bad, but I was honestly very suprised by the decision.

If anyone can offer an opinion or shed some light on the situation, please do so.

I rescheduled my interview today from Dec. 18th to Nov 7th to avoid a final exam conflict. What a bump up! Portal keeps showing they haven't received my DO letter yet though, and he sent it in about a month ago. Is anyone else having this issue, or should I have him send another one? I called to ask about it and Melissa was unavailable.

Would anyone recommend a certain hotel to stay at? Good price and location preferred?

I am not sure but I think that the Marriott gives students interviewing a discount, but I may be mistaken. Anyway, the Marriotts are the way to go, a bit more pricey but, much more comfortable. Maybe, another first year can back me up on this?

I'm interviewing Thursday and I am also interested in hearing peoples recommendations for lodging. I got an email requesting where I was staying and whatnot.

i stayed at the comfort inn on peach st for $60 (without an interview discount--but i think they have them) i thought it was nice, older building but rooms redone. they also have complimentary shuttle to/from airport and to/from interview, and allow interviewees to check out late (after their interview). continental bfast too, with belgian waffles. mmmm.

from an Erieite.....the Days Inn, Comfort Inn, residence Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard by Mariott, and the Hilton Garden are all owned by the same company. If you call the residence inn 814.864.2500, they can check the rates and availability at the other hotels and possibly save you a lot of time from calling around.

There also is another locally owned two hotel chain, one is a Clarion and the other is a Hampton Inn, though they are both quite a ways from the school. their number is 814.833.1116, I think.

There are other hotels around, but am not sure of how their shuttles, etc... are. I am not associated with any of the companies mentioned, just someone form Erie who is interviewing in November and wanted to add a little value here.

Good luck to all (for those already accepted, please save a seat for me....) and hope that helps.

Nope... but when I get into school I'll look at all the interviewees and snicker... Its like fresh meat in the slaughter house.

BTW I don't think I've seen an interviewee wear anything other than black. It's like you all are going to a funeral. Try something festive. Bright even, but not to bright.

haha...thanks. I have a grey pinstripe. I'm debating to go with a blue shirt or white. Tie will probably be a blue/red or solid blue.

who would wear all black???

...far too formal IMO.

The suit I'm probably gonna end up wearing is dark blue. I have a red/white striped shirt that looks patriotic and a little like Waldo.

So what are the tips for prepping for the interview? I've read through the interview feedback site (had a lot of free time at work) and pulled out interview questions to familarize myself with (not writing out responses though cause I don't find that helpful, I'll just end up ****ing it up and the adcoms will easily be able to tell I'm full of ****). A doctor I know offered to meet with me before my interviews just to go over with me what I could face at the interview. Anything else?

yeah i was reading the interview feedback section as well and the questions the Erie folks ask seem to be pretty varied. So I'm just gonna sit back and try to have fun with the interview since that what seems to work best for me. the more i try to prepare for an interview the more worked up i get until i just become a nervous wreck lol.

The interview is far from intimidating.

Slevin, you obviously didn't see me last Monday b/c I was in gray pinstripes.

Questions are usually what you'd expect of a closed-file interview. Tell me about yourself. Then there is the why DO/medicine? They DO NOT do the article anymore.

Also, there is an optional PBL session where you DO PBL for about 45 minutes. Thats immediately after the tour.

The questions for my interview were pretty standard but there was one that threw me off and made me think for a minute. It was "what does the white coat symbolize to you?" It was a great question and my response was respect, trust, knowledge, and of course, compassion. Good luck to all of you!

where can u read up on PBL and other stuff like the handbook for lake erie?

Just famiarilaize yourself with the school, read everything on the website you can find about it. Ask them to talk about the pathways, show them that this is THE school you want to go to.

Ask about classes (and not just anatomy) ask how rotations are done, have them paint you a picture of the school and life in the community because this is where you will live while you are here.

I will be staying at the Comfort Inn on peach st as well now. They gave me a $60 rate including an interview discount. It would have been $89 w/o, and they just took my word that I was being interviewed. I like the shuttle idea, I am pessimistic that I would get lost somehow and show up late. Belgian waffles does sound good too.

Hey all, I just had a very broad-scale question. What do they expect for the question about why I want to attend LECOM-E? I know it seems self explanatory but I tend to dissect everything down more than it should be. That is the only thing holding me back from sending it. Thanks in advance

If I were applying I would break it down to the point where I would give 3 reasons and back it up. What is it about LECOME that impresses you the most (hint different pathways) and then figure them out write a few sentences on each and then BAM... off to the post office.

For those who have received an interview. I filled out my secondary with the payment on September 8th. But, for some reason I still am receiving this message on my portal status.
"Your Supplemental Application has not been received. Please log into the LECOM Portal to submit your Supplemental Application." How long does it take to get an actual decision from the time you submit everything? Thanks in advance...

Anyone know approximately what the tuition is for out of state students?

I got an interview today for the 31st, but really want to see how much it costs...any advice would be appreciated

Its listed on the website at $27k.

I have heard reference to this in the past put cannot find the specifics.......I am interviewing in November but cannot find the list of questions LECOM ADCOM uses.

I heard they went away from the questions, but tht they recently went back to them.

Can anybody provide a link or list??

Thanks.

I interviewed the 13 and the list did not exist then. They claim the neuroticism causes premeds to focus on the questions and not have a casual conversation (paraphrased, of course).

Thanks for the reply. I have heard this, but it just is counter intuitive as we are all neurotic in wanting to prepare for something like an exam or something like that. just feels weird. In any event, how was your interview and what areas did they seem most inerested?

The interview was alright. I did get accepted. I explained heavily why DO (OMM). Talked about the area and how it is compatible to me. I did ask at the end why they (the interviewers) liked LECOM and based off of their statement made my closing statement (such a good move). It was fine, nothing hard or ethical for me.

How long does it take to hear back after you send in the secondary? I am confident, with my stats, I will get an interview. I hate playing the waiting game that is the medical school application process. Humor my impatience please!!

Thanks.. You submitted really early so i doubt my turn around will be quite as fast, but I hope I am wrong!

All you funny kids went with dark suits on thursday again... One of these day's I'd like to see an interview group with at least one non-dark suit (and gray counts as dark)

Dr. Evans once commented on it that interviewee's look like they are going to a funeral.

Do you suggest this instead?:

 I would love to see someone show up at an interview in this. How could you keep from smiling???
Exactly... either one in red or one in blue. Although you should wear massive amounts of bling. If you don't got gold caps on your teeth you doing something wrong.

On a serious note, I've seen many professors here (male) wearing earrings. I think they still think it's the 80's

Does that outfit meet the LECOM dress code? 😛

To me the dress code isn't a huge deal. I was kinda confused when they said you could not have bottled water or any liquids on you at any time though.

Does LECOM have any religious affiliations? I was interviewed by a nun and the school reminds me of the catholic school i spent a few years in...I'm just curious

😱 Tell me that doesn't include coffee. NO COFFEE IN CLASS?!?!

Anyone else interviewing here on Thursday? I've never been to PA so I am really looking forward to seeing the state. I'm excited for this trip but the no coffee in class thing .... I need a constant drip going to stay awake so hmmm.... guess I will have to keep a thermos in the car or something and guzzle it down at lunch if I end up matriculating here. 😎

Ahhhhh!!!! I just got an interview!!!!! January 8th!!!! I'm soooo excited 😱

No coffee or anything of any kind

Is there a rationale behind that? Like a scalding incident that happened in the past that involved a professor's groin and a pipping hot extra foamy mocha orange latte?
