LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Slevin, thanks for the help. I think you may have talked me into getting a Mac. Haha. I was just concerned that OS X would not work at LECOM since the IT department makes it sound like it is so. But it's good to know OS X will still work fine. Do you prefer iWork to Office? If so, why?
Thanks again.
I like iWork to Office because it's not bloated with all the extra crap. It does what it needs to do without trying to be everything to everyone. Besides the MS updates aren't the greatest and when I did have office 08 on my system it caused me to have to reinstall Office several times because MS couldn't get their $hit together.

It takes a little time to get used to iWork but once you do you'll be glad you did

Yo chocolate, I interviewed monday as well. Good LucK. I checked the status today and it was changed to "Admissions Committe has made a decision."

Interviewed on Monday, and already a decision and awaiting the letter? That is quick turnaround!

Yea i know, I am getting quite nervous.....hopefully it was a good turnaround!

Is anyone else in the same situation as me? They said a decision has not made any decision yet. I have heard nothing. This has got to be a bad thing right? Love to hear what you guys think

meghalo, when did you interview? Do they have all your materials and DO letter? I didn't have my letter in until a couple weeks after I interviewed. Once I had the letter in, it took about a week and a half to hear something back from them. Also, I bet the adcom has been out of the office due to the holiday so I wouldn't worry too much about it right now. Give them a few more days and then see what they say.

They review applications every wednesday. I interviewed on a monday too, by the following monday I had my decision in the mail.

WOuldn't worry because if you were gonna be rejected it would still say a decision has been made. Sure you got all your materials/letters in so the committee can review your app?

the thing is is that I have not been interviewed yet, so I really dont know what to think. I have called and they said they will let me know. They have all my stuff I believe. Anyone else in this situation?

is there an official facebook group yet class of 2013???

Hey guys, I had a general question. Are the interviewers on the admissions committee?

Ok were you offered an interview or are they still deciding whether or not to extend an interview invite after you submitted your secondary? I was assuming you have already interviewed or at least had an interview invite.

I already interviewed, but i am just curious on how the whole thing works...

hey just wondering if anyone who is desi goin to lecom, or already accepted? and needs roomate stuff and what not

PM me

Engineeredout, just wondering if you decided between LECOM Erie and NYCOM. I have decided on NYCOM since my family is in NY, but LECOM is definitely cheaper unless you can commute to NYCOM.

Bleeker10,

They have still not decided on giving me an interview invite yet. Has anyone waited this long also? January is approaching have not gotten an invite or a rejection yet.

I was had my AACOMAS complete Nov 19th. I have my interview setup with LECOM for Jan 12th. They sent me an email 12/9. I grew up right around the area.

HEY MKG87...

i know we interviewed on the same day so I wanted to ask you... did you get your letter yet...because I didn't... I thought it was going to be quick?

Hey Chocolate24, I have not received anything yet. I think we should have something by this friday.

Meghalo, I submitted my seconday on 9/18 and received an interview invite on 9/24 for 11/24. That was also earlier in the application season so they may not be handing out invites as quickly.

Once my app was complete on 12/3, I received a letter on 12/12. It took awhile because I live in northwest Arkansas.

So I kinda started to freak out over the holidays. I've been accepted to one school and it isn't one of my "top choices." Actually, I would be really hesitant to go there. i just got an interview invite to KCOM, which I think is an awesome school, but I won't be interviewing there until Feb and there's no guarantee that I'll be accepted. I also got a rejection letter from CCOM, one of my other top choices. Now I'm thinking about adding a school, and LECOM really caught my eye (I don't know why I didn't apply here in the first place). Is it too late to apply, would I just be wasting my time and money? BTW: MCAT 28Q, sci GPA: 3.1, overall GPA: 3.2.

I wouldn't say it's too late yet. Too late will be after the deadline to submit the secondary. It is getting late in the season but if you feel like you want to give it a shot, then go for it. You can check my mdapps for my stats (similar MCAT but lower GPA). Just make sure you fill out the secondary online as soon as you get it to have a better shot. It took about a week for them to offer me an invite after I submitted my secondary, but that was in September. Also, if you get an interview it might not be until the end of January or February. Try calling the admissions office to see if you can pick up an earlier slot someone else has declined. Good luck

I decided to send in an app (I don't imagine AACOMAS will get it out until maybe the 5th or 6th), but my letters were sent today with Interfolio. Wish me luck!

Good luck man!!!!!! Happy New Years🙂

People keep asking me what I decided in LECOM vs. NYCOM, even though I haven't actually heard from NYCOM after my interview.

Anyway to answer your question, I don't care what NYCOM says cause I'd rather go to LECOM.

Have you looked at NYCOMs tuition prices, including their raise over the next four years? It doesn't become cheaper than LECOM, in fact it looks more and more like NYCOM w/o housing = LECOM w/ housing. I could in theory live at home and commute to school (like my parents want me to do) but its just not happening. I can't go back to living at home, and the cost savings really isn't significant anyway.

And personally, having grown up on Long Island and gone to college here, I need a change in scenery. There was absolutely nothing wrong with NYCOM and I'm sure it'd be a great education there, I just want to be elsewhere, and LECOM seems like a great school.

GOT MY ACCEPTANCE TODAY!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT 1st one Baby!!!!!!!!

Spent some time in NY and there is nothin like it. But, I grew up in Erie, moved to a bigger city (Upstate NY) and then back to Erie. I realized Erie actually had a lot of the things the bigger vities had (just not AS big) though I never actually looked for it. If you want some specific info on erie and what it has to offer or any specific Erie questions, PM me or even post them here and I will be glad to share.

I just got my acceptance letter today too : ) yay --also my first acceptance! 🙂

Honestly, this is one of the reasons I am excited about LECOM. I grew up in Omaha, NE, which has a pop of >600,000 in the metro area. I felt Erie was just a smaller version of Omaha. Even the way the downtown was setup felt like Omaha. It just seems like there is plenty of things to do to get away from school. I am a big hockey fan, so being able to watch games of the major junior and college teams was a big reason for me applying. Plus there is an adult league I could join if I wanted to.

Hey Bleeker,

When you applied, did the adcom consider you as URM since you are 1/16 Indian?

Honestly, I don't know. I don't remember what I marked on AACOMAS. They might have, but I can't say with any certainty because it was never brought up in my secondary or interview.

Awesome, do you think you will be attending? Bleeker, I will probably attend. I do have two other interviews, and I have ruled out St. Georges because I would rather stay in the states. But i don't think NYCOM or NSUCOM are going to be cheaper than Erie.......

Yea that is a huge benefit of LECOM is the cheap tuition. I have to hear back after interviews from two of my state schools, but I have a really good feeling from LECOM

I need some info guys. On the website it says:"We received your supplemental application. The review process will begin on your file. You will be notified when updates are made."
However, under the folder requirements for letters and credits, it is blank. I tried for a little over a week to get confirmation that they have received my letters but no one has responded yet. I understand the holidays slow things a bit, but it would bring me a little comfort to know that I have completed my app and that the ball is now in LECOM's court.

I was told the office was closed for part of the break, so maybe that is why you haven't heard anything yet. I wouldn't start to worry yet. If you haven't heard anything by the middle of the week, try contacting them again.

That's what I figured, but I was wondering if anyone experienced the same thing on the website as I have.

Alright, so I have been accepted to PBL, I am not sure if i want to change to LDP though. My question is, if you are an LDP student, how do the classes run? Do you do biochemistry for four weeks then exam, onto neurbiology for 4 weeks, then exam, and so on and so forth? Or do you take multiple classes at once as in an undergraduate institution?

LDP runs several classes at once

ISP does one class at a time. Last semester we had:
Physiology 1.5 weeks
Biochem 2 weeks
Micro 3 weeks
Immuno 9 days

Hope it helps

there used to be schedules on LECOMs website for MSI and MSII. They still list rotation schedules for MSIII and IV, but nothing for I and II

Does anyone have a schedule, especially what to expect when we are all in LDP for the first 12 weeks?

That's Core, and then when you get about halfway into 2nd semester of 1st year, and then this continues all through 2nd year, is "Systems". So you have cardio for a month, GI for a month, neuroanatomy, etc....so its 1 system with for example cardio classes taught by cardiologists, but you also have cardio pharm, cardio micro, cardio path, etc. A lot of those though are reviews from when you took micro/pharm/path/physio in Core I & II which are right before Systems start. I hated Core, but systems aren't too bad.

I was wondering if a current student could comment on what the clinical experience is like in the first two years. Do you go to Millcreek Hospital and have a preceptor or do standardized patients? Thanks

Edit: I know they use standardized patients, but what I meant is do the patients come to the school or the hospital?

I was wondering for those that have interviewed if they still use the Article reading during the interview or have they done away with that? thanks

they dont do articles anymore

When I last spoke to someone at LECOM, they did mention that interviewees are given an article to read and summarize during the interview.

They do that at LECOM-Bradenton, but not at LECOM-Erie (at least not when I interviewed in October).

1st year 2nd semester you start H&P: you have standardized patients that you practice on and are tested on at Plaza 18 which is doctor's offices. This continues into 2nd year 1st semester (1 year total)

Then 2nd year 2nd semester H&P is clinical preceptorships every Tues afternoon starting in Feb. We haven't started yet and haven't received any info on it, but I assume it will be wherever the doctor works.

I've never done anything at Millcreek or at the school itself.

hey just wondering, whats the muslim population like in ERIE? and or Pakistani/Indian?

if anyone knows

I grew up 2 hours north from Erie, the muslim indopak population is modest. nothing too big, not like jersey, but large enough to meet some nice people. I know a few people that are indopak in LECOM so my guess is that there is a fair number in erie.
