LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a 2nd year PCSP student and might be the one who spoke to you when you came to interview (There are 2 of us who do that). RESIDENCY is done wherever you match, PCSP or not. You have ZERO obligation to stay in Erie for residency. Neither of us would have said otherwise. Clinical ROTATIONS are done at LECOM affiliated locations, I appologize for any confusion.

Thanks for the info about residency! So, are there any electives at all in the PCSP sequence? And also, is there room to do even one rotation at an out of state institution? For someone who knows a specific hospital or region in which they want to do residency, will they get the chance for an "audition rotation" like some fourth years arrange to make contacts? Or are you definitely locked into Erie for all three years, including every rotation?

You give up electives and audition rotations. The farthest you can go is Cleveland for rotations. BUT, you save a year and about 50K.

The OMT fellowship is available in Erie but only AFTER you get board certified in something. In other words, after at least a 3 year residency.

Did you interview today 1/15?

If so when you walked into the OMM lab us 1st years wanted to scream run away... but all interviewees look nervous, it's actually kinda cute.

haha, i didn't interview the 15th, i had an interview on the 12th, when we did check out the OMM lab there were two people just chilling on the benches. it was pretty fun. i like LECOM alot. I got good vibes from amy, dr. wise, and dr. hoppe.

Okay, thanks for the reply. Knowing I want to do primary care, the saved year and money are obviously very appealing to me. This program is the only thing that could sway me from choosing PCOM (I interview at LECOM next month) if I thought I could get selected for it, so I'm just trying to learn as much about the structure as possible. Not being able to rotate at the institutions I might be interested in for residency is a slight drawback though.

So I am applying for the Air Force HPSP and I just had a random thought. Do the students who are doing the HPSP ever wear their military uniforms to class? Are there any current students on here who are HPSP that could answer some LECOM-E specific questions?

WOOOHOOOOO just thought that I would say I have an interview for 2/10

Good luck you will do great! Honestly read the interview reviews here and know the questions everyone has posted and you will ROCK them!! 🙂

So the question came up as to what I will be doing this summer before starting med school at LECOM, and I had no answer. Should I work or take a trip and enjoy my vacation while I can? Current med students, could any of you give me a recommendation on past internships I possibly could get with a BS in Bio and a med school acceptance?

Take a trip... go and have fun an internship won't help you but a nice vacation would be great

Has anyone ever transferred out of LECOM? should I even bother trying?

You don't like it here? I haven't head you complain.

Anyway if you transfer you might have to start over at day 1 which makes all the work you put in for naught since you have to start from the beginning

Look at it this way in 1.5 years you'll be done here and moving on to clinical rotations. Then you won't have to worry about any of this and the administration. Just work hard till clinical rotations.

Oh and I'm mad your roommate didn't come out to dinner and the bar on thurs after the pharm exam.

Just got my acceptance letter!!! 1st one! I'm so pumped! 🙂

Other than the interview feedback, does anyone know of anything else I should read in preparation for the interview?

Just know the main tenets of osteopathic medicine and be able to elaborate on them farther. Be enthusiastic and know some strengths and weaknesses. It is a very stressfree interview

Na.... just go in and relax. You'll be fine... don't worry about the students laughing at the interviewees we do that to all of them because we were there once and if we knew what was coming we would have run screaming from the school and become a teacher instead

My advice would be to show a lot of interest in the area, and since you're apparently from there, that should be no issue. 🙂

A prevailing theme on the day I interviewed was them emphasizing everything about Erie and what it has to offer in the way of entertainment, recreation, athletics, etc. I honestly left feeling really excited about the prospect of living in Erie during medical school (and I'm from NYC 😀).

All in all, good luck.

Can someone explain how rotations work at LECOM? I am from Philly and saw that LECOM has an affiliation with the Frankford hospitals. Do most students get their first choice of location for rotations?

Hey, I interview on the 26th. When are you getting into town? You can PM me and we can talk a little so we know someone the day of...

G-luck to all those who are interviewing soon!!!

When is the first day of school, and what typically happens during the first week? (particularly for PBL students)

Hey Calebhurnon...

I interviewed on the 8th as well. Starting to get really ansy! Let me know when you hear back. I was hoping to get a response today...

Since it is a federal holiday today, the post office is not delivering mail today. So a decision could be pushed back a day or so. Good luck and let us know the result.

mcp,

did you send them an interest letter to remind them or anything?

I forgot to mention that I sent my transcript for last semester to AACOMAS and about 3 days later got the interview at LECOM. There may be a correlation there. Good Luck

no way that turn around is that quick

I'd put big money on no correlation there. That's way too fast—it has to reach them via usps and then they have to process it and email it to the school. No f***'n way.

Hey Im interviewing on feb 3rd, just got the invite last week. LECOM has alot of rotation sites around my hometown so I decided to check the school out. I was wondering if anyone else has been in the same situation where you need to put a deposit down for another school like a week after you interview at a different school. I have a deposit due feb 10th but I kinda wanted to hear back from LECOM first before I decide, but I doubt the turnaround is that quick. Any advice?

Also, for those of you who have interviewed recently, about how many people interviewed on the day that you were there? thanks

WOW...it was just a thought people. CALM DOWN. It's really not that big of a deal. It was about 10 days before, so a little bit of an overexaggeration on my part. Sorry if that is also too quick of a turnaround.

Hey i ran into the same problem - i interviewed at VCOM in early December and their deposit of 1500 to hold my spot was due Jan 12 and all my other interviews were in Jan.... SOOOOO i ended up putting down the deposit bc i just wanted to be sure i had a spot somewhere but was really interested in LECOM.

Honestly, worst case scenario, i lose 1500 (and yes i know that is a lot of money and its my money not my parents), but in the scheme of things, the piece of mind of knowing i have a spot is worth it - plus it takes the stress off the other interviews 😉

I'm in! And I'm going!

And yeah, I'm an idiot to wait for mail yesterday... 🙂

And jpheartdoc, there were around 10 of us on Jan 8th.

so it looks like i'll be filling in one of the seats at LECOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So happy for this. 🙂

I have a question to any LECOM 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years (I just like counting). Have you guys gone out of PA to NY? If so, where are you doing you clinical rotations and can you stay there for the whole two years? Does anyone go down to florida to do rotations at the affiliated site that LECOM bradenton has? Is it hard to get placed into a place like NY for you 3rd of fourth years and would i be sacrificing better hospitals that I could rotate at in PA, if for some reason LECOM has better rotation in PA (I am assuming so..).

for those that interviewed on the 16th, does your status say "application under review"? does anyone have "decision made" yet?

I interviewed on the 15th and i just checked and saw this:

The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days.

Very cryptic - anyone want to tell me if this is a good thing or a bad thing??
