LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone plan on living with someone near LECOM? or how many people put there names up on LECOMs student housing list.

I think I put myself on it, however I'd really prefer to avoid having a roommate. Don't get me wrong, I'm a friendly guy:banana:, I've just had some really **** roommates and would rather avoid the whole thing.

The way I see it, living in an apartment complex is like the best of both worlds. You get your privacy but still have people close by.

Though 650$ per month for a house?!

$650/month for a whole house? That is not bad at all. I was paying $550 for a tiny tiny room without utilities. Although, I am looking/waiting to get a roommate as well for the following year. Perhaps someone should start a special thread about it where people can start posting their interests when looking for a roomate, before we get the promised list in march or april 😎

I'm PBL at Erie. I also put my name down on the roommate list, but am thinking of flying solo the first year-- I am definitely someone who prefers have company, but I think it would be best if there were fewer distractions/factors to worry about during my first year of med school. I go back and forth every other day, though, so we'll see what actually ends up happening.

BTW, anyone have any idea when the schedule for our class will be out? I'm just curious about when orientation will begin ... thanks!

If it is anything like last year orientation will be the last week of July. You will get your schedule at orientation. But don't trust it since they'll give it to you and within a week 12 more changes will be made and they'll give you a new one.

I would go with a roommate, cuts down on expenses and they can help motivate you to study or just someone to talk to at the end of the day if you need it.

Anyone interviewing on 2/17? :hello:
Nope, but if you are nice I'll wave at your while you are interviewing...

Just remember a year from now, hopefully you'll be a MS1 and 12.5% complete with med school. You'll be in school and see the interviewees come and go and you'll say to yourself. Glad I'm not one of them. That was hell

Oh and when you first start school you'll think anatomy is the worst thing ever but you couldn't be more wrong.

Good luck.

Um I still think anatomy was the worst thing ever, hands down. Worse than Basic Neuroanatomy.

Anatomy is the worst....Core/Core II are 2nd worst....Systems are much better...

I'm currently a 2nd year who bought a home and just recently put it up for sale. It is 3 blocks from LECOM in the Millcreek County though, not Erie. So if you have any kids the school system is a lot better. I'm willing to give the entire house furnished since I'm going home in May. It doesn't have a garage but whoever has a motorcycle can keep it in the basement for the winter.

Here is the link and contact me if you have any concerns and questions. The house was remodeled since I bought it as well.

http://coldwellbankererie.com/property/property.asp?PRM_MLSName=EriePA&PRM_MLSNumber=97325

BTW, if it doesn't by May I will rent it for $750.

Good luck with your applications!

I was able to bump my interview up to March 5, anyone going to be joining me?

Is this site still accurate: http://my.lecom.edu/lecom/application/LDP.asp

What is it exactly that you take first at LECOM and for how long?

That looks about right, those are covering the 1st semester and 2nd semester classes, but it leaves out you take MSK and 2 Neuro systems.

They changed the way 2012 did theirs so I'm not sure what classes you take w/Anatomy, I took it w/Embryo & Histo.

Then CORE I took micro, biochem, path, pharm, physio.

Then Core II (2nd semester) I took micro 2, biochem 2, and Pharm 2...I think that's it?? I can't remember. Then you also take OPP & H&P along the way always (start H&P 2nd semester of 1st year)

2nd year is way better than 1st year in my opinion.

Hi guys! I'm interviewing this Monday 2/2!! 👍 I apologize if the following has been answered before. I scoured the thread and didn't find anything... so here goes.

I'm not entirely clear on where I need to be and when. Is there a particular entrance I should be aware of? What time should I plan on getting there? And where can I park? Did anyone receive an email confirmation with directions, times, and other guidance? I only have a voicemail reminding me to be there at 8am.

a little lost...

As long as you are staying at a decent hotel they should take you right over there. I made a shuttle reservation from my hotel at 7:30 AM and was there about 10 minutes early. The shuttle will drop you off right in front of the school, you just walk right in and you will be all set. The nice thing about it being all in one building is that if it is cold out you get to stay inside. Oh, and if you are interested stay for the mock PBL session afterwards, it totally confirmed my confidence in that pathway.

u actually have to go around to the back entrance, just follow the students and see the person at the reception desk.

The shuttle dropped me off right in front of where I needed to be... could have been the back though---I am a newbie🙄

Go to the back entrance, park in the visitor spots to your right as you come into the lot.

When you get into the building tell the person at the front desk you are here for an interview and they'll direct you to the right place.

I would get there no later than 15 min before 8 and talk to the rest of the people interviewing, enjoy being in the conference room it is nice but it was the only time I ever saw it.

Oh and if you see a med student just know we all are thinking it sucks to be you but we all were there at one point and you should be fine

thanks so much for the helpful comments!! What would I do w/out you guys...

i am also interviewing on 2/2! i am currently a LECOM postbac student so if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Can a LECOM-Erie student do their 3rd and 4th year rotations at the LECOM-B affiliate hospitals?😕

Yes you can but you don't have preference. Once LECOM-B has selected there sites you can rotate where there are open spots.

Anyone else interviewing next Monday, 2/10? I am nervous as h***.

i am also interviewing on 2/2! i am currently a LECOM postbac student so if you guys have any questions, feel free to ask. good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Best wishes in your interview. I have questions about the postbac program.

1. Do you get individual advising from a prehealth advisor?

2. Do they have any academic support services like tutoring, etc.

3. How would you rate the quality of the education they provide?

4. Any regrets about doing the postbac program?

5. How receptive were the instructors to you if you had questions and are/were they willing to write you a strong letter of recommendation?

6. How much time throughout the day did you devote to your studies? Did you have a time to do other things like work, spend time with family, etc.

7. Did any of your classes also include med students?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am really considering doing this because its been 9 years since I set foot in a classroom and maybe doing this program before getting into med school might be a good step. Thanks.

Hey sorry i didnt get to catch up to you until after my interview today but I can help you out with those questions.

1. Do you get individual advising from a prehealth advisor?
I don't know who or even if there is a prehealth advisor per se but I do know that if you enter the building, there are plenty of staff willing to help you and provide advice. All faculty at LECOM have an open-door policy to all students as opposed to strict office hours so you can seek help from anyone.

2. Do they have any academic support services like tutoring, etc.
Recently we had a professor who advertised to all students that we should see him if we ever need help with any class in particular or just talking about study habits and ways to improve as a student. I am sure there are other professors out there that are more than willing to tutor you in a certain area.

3. How would you rate the quality of the education they provide?
I chose LECOM because it had a cheap tuition and I felt I had the best chance of getting into their medical school. That's not to say that they have the best quality of education out there but then again I have not personally witnessed other postbac programs to compare legitimately. However, I will say that LECOM has been a well established institution for years now and that speaks volumes to their ability of producing great numbers of osteopathic physicians. This is the same way its implemented in the postbac program.

4. Any regrets about doing the postbac program?
I have no regret whatsoever because I know that I joined the program to get into a medical school and ultimately, I feel that I have a really good chance of getting in because of my experiences throughout the program.

5. How receptive were the instructors to you if you had questions and are/were they willing to write you a strong letter of recommendation?
In regards to having questions for the instructors, as I said earlier, most professors are generally open to any student with concerns. Some may be more busier than others but for the most part, you should get your answer. As for recommendation letters, we as postbac students were required to get a letter of recommendation from the LECOM faculty for our med school application and both professors I asked were very receptive.

6. How much time throughout the day did you devote to your studies? Did you have a time to do other things like work, spend time with family, etc.
The postbac program is set up so you have 1 class a day from 2:30pm to 6:00pm. The reason for that timing is so that its suited for both groups of people that study well in the day or in the night. We have exams every other Monday and that exam contains questions from the previous 9 classes we have had. So in the end it turns out to be a lot of information for 1 exam every other Monday. Therefore, in order to do well in this program, I would suggest keeping up with the material on a daily basis and devoting atleast 3 hours per day minimum on the material. This is so you don't fall behind and cram it all the weekend before the exam. There was plenty of time to do other things since you only have 1 class a day but just remember to manage your time well and you can easily relax with your friends/family every now and then.

7. Did any of your classes also include med students?
Although we take medical school level classes, we are still separate from the actual medical school so those students have their own classes. However, our 2nd semester, med school students that didn't do so well in the 1st semester had to drop into the postbac program to prove they can handle that material before they were allowed back into the school. We have about 3 new students because of that but that's about it.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

Hey guys,

I just interviewed last Friday and my status changed today to "Congratulations you have been offered a position on the LECOM Erie Alternate list. You must contact the Admissions Office at 814-866-6641 to accept the position within 2 weeks."

What does this mean for me? Does it just mean I am on the waitlist or is it something different?

Well it says you were offered a position on the alternate list... I would guess that also means the wait list.

I would send them a follow up letter in May and reiterate your commitment to coming to LECOM to lear the craft of medicine

Does anyone know the estimated number of LDP, PBL, and IPS per class?

Hey stapler,
I interviewed with you last Friday too and I got waitlisted as well! Or offered a position on the alternate list... I guess its the same thing. So I was kind of wondering what that means too. Lemme know if you figure out anything- ahh now we have to wait!!

I interviewed on 1/22 and had the same thing and the next day it changed to a letter has been sent in the mail and I was accepted. I guess they accidentaly put that up instead of the letter has been sent.

hope that helps

ACCEPTED!!!!!! Heck yeah I'm gonna be a doctor!:soexcited::soexcited::soexcited::bow:

Hey everyone, I interviewed on 2/3 and found out today that Im accepted LDP. I had a deposit due one monday at another school so they told me my decision early, they were really helpful. Ill be attending this fall.

I interviewed 1/12 and I still haven't heard anything. I called a few times and got different information about my decision/letter each time I called. My portal still says congratulations you have been accepted for an interview. I'm just frustrated because I just want to know so I can make other plans if needed! Is anyone else waiting?

Francheezy,

I hope your interview went well. Thanks for the info. It's helping me a great deal. I have a few more questions for you, but I am in between two appointments, so I will have to post them a little later. Thanks again for the info and best wishes on the result of your interview.

Hmm I might try calling them?? I interviewed on Jan 15 and received my acceptance letter late last week.... its worth a shot! Good luck!

lmao @ "TBA" School of Medicine, Class of 2013. That is the best signature i've seen.

Curricular options are very nice (PBL, Independent Study, Lecture Discussion). Primary care people will be in heaven, with a possible year gained via the 3 year PC Pathway.

I'm still hedging between allopathic and osteopathic schools, but I know that I'd like to do an allopathic family medicine residency. How do students in the 3 year pathway match up with allopathic residencies? I'm assuming there's no problem, but someone mentioned in another post that there are fewer clinical clerkship opportunities (16 instead of 24, or something like that).

Any thoughts?

For those of you accepted to Seton Hill, did your acceptance letter say Seton Hill specifically? Mine just says to LECOM, but doesn't specify between Erie and Seton Hill. I'm assuming this means Erie, but you never really know, and I don't want to call and ask. I'm pretty sure they will call me an idiot and take my acceptance away 🙂. Also, I'm thinking about renting a house in Erie, so anyone who is accepted and interested PM me! Thanks!!!

I'm relatively new here-

I recently (12/23) was accepted to LECOM-Erie as well. I was specifically selected to Seton Hill, which I don't particularly mind (I indicated a strong interest in pbl), though I applied to resubmitt to the committee to see if I could place on a wait list at Erie for the pbl program. Only reason really were the opportunities for extra-curricular options (clubs, networking, international travel, ect...) Being a new branch it has yet to est. these. I'll def be looking into housing though- should I end up at Erie - so I very well may PM you k4med

When I received my acceptance letter (11/30) they told me that PBL-Erie was currently full and that I could choose to either a) go into LDP-Erie and be put on the waitlist for PBL-Erie, or b) go directly into PBL at Seton Hill.

If your acceptance letter does not specify Seton Hill, then you have been accepted to the Erie campus. Congrats! (I was confused about this as well, so you're not the first the to be confused by the acceptance letter.)

All praise be to God!

I just received an invitation for interview on March 17!!😀

PBL is closed in Erie? 🙁 that's the one I want!! When I interview 3/5 and they ask which pathway I want, should I still say PBL?? any advice?
