LECOM - Erie Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello, I am going to interview at LECOM in November, I was wondering if anyone knew what the interview format was like and if anyone had any hints on how to prepare for it.

Also to current students what is it like at LECOM? I am really interested in this school because its one of the more reputable Osteopathic Medical schools and is the least expensive of the private institutions.

Great!

Don't even worry. All you have to do is show up, they will accept anyone. I would wish you good luck, but trust me you don't need it. It is inexpensive, but you get what you paid for. Reputable? Oh, yeah, right there with Harvard and Johns-Hopkins.

I'm having a hard time understanding why you come to this thread if you really don't like this school? I think everyone comes here to get advise about applying to LECOM and not to hear you or anyone else trash the school. Stating that you don't like the school and its not a good fit for you is cool, but constantly trashing the schools reputation and students is a bit overkill.

OPP lab wasn't awkward at first. There were a couple times when the techniques we were doing seemed awkward for a split second, but you just do them and don't worry about it. There will be times when you can feel the heat from your partner's genitals on your hands when doing sacrum stuff. It's even worse if you're a guy and have only had guy partners. I did almost make my partner pee his pants bc I was pressing too hard on his bladder haha.

The interview is short, but trust me when I say a short interview is better than a long interview. I had an interview at the University of Arkansas that lasted an hour. That one sucked because they were able to ask a lot of off the wall questions that caught me off guard. My interview here was about 20 mins but that was more than enough time to show my enthusiasm for the school.

Awesome!

I think (s)he's a troll, I think (s)he didn't get into the school and is a little upset so (s)he bashes the school as an act of protest.

Interviewed there, awesome school! Does anyone know if they tell you your admission status/wait list/rejection via email/phone/snail mail?

Snail mail. The admission portal will say that a decision has been made on your application, and then you will receive your decision within 30 days in the mail. Good luck!

What did you like best about LECOM?

No, Peace isn't a troll, just bitter about his situation with LECOM.

So I've been all through this thread on more than one occasion... ultimately, wondering where I can find the LECOM-Erie Class of 2014 thread.... anyone??! I'm sure it's in the thread, but call me lazy, I don't care to rummage through 10 pages again!! 🙂

If there isn't one in the Osteo Forum Class threads then you can just create one.

I was wondering about the health and wellness facility. What is it like, what are the impressions of it to students. Is it free for students. Also how far it is located from the Erie campus.

I agree but I think it is too early to start the LECOM-Erie Class of 2014 thread.

But don't get me wrong......I am very proud to be apart of the Class of 2014!!!

I am not sure about how far along we are in the process but it feels like about halfway. I am waiting till around December. There will be more activity then if we started now.

You can take a virtual tour of it online at the LECOM-Erie website. It is a cool tour. you can even walk though walls on the tour. That's right.... who needs doors!!!

Dude that place looks amazing!

It's a couple miles from school. It's really nice and there is a lot to do. They have an indoor track, lots of circuit machinery, plenty of ellipticals, treadmills, and stationary bikes. There's a lap pool, wading pool, and water aerobics pool. Spinning room, abs room, sauna, whirlpool, steam room, golf simulator, racquetball courts, and basketball courts. If you interview, stop by and ask for a tour. I did that when I visited Erie in May. We get free access as part of our tuition

LOL!!!!! A little too much detail there!!!!

I have a question (for bleeker or anyone else with an answer)....Do you switch partners in OPP lab so you get and idea of what it is like dealing with multiple body types? I would think that would be advantageous to the learning process. Also, do you get to pick your partner or is it assigned? And is everyone in OPP lab at the same time regardless of your pathway or are there more than one class? Same questions goes for anatomy!!

Sorry so many questions!

Yea its TMI but just trying to let everyone know what to expect at ANY and ALL DO schools. You can't be shy because your grade will suffer. We've learned some cool things and have plenty more to learn. There are plenty of body types in my class. You may not get to experience them all in lab, but you can always practice with friends outside of lab. The lab is open to hone your skills.

It's really cheap to add access for your immediate family too. I think they said like $25 for your significant other or like $50 for your significant other and up to two kids. Not a bad deal at all for everything they offer there! It earned LECOM-Erie major bonus points from me. I hated the thought of having to shell out extra money for a gym membership somewhere when I'd be living off of student loans...

Question for current students:

Given that LECOM does not pay the hospitals it is affiliated with, is there a considerable risk that hospitals could drop LECOM from its rotation list? Does not paying the hospitals have any affect on how the students are taught/treated in hospitals?

It has been addressed before in this thread, but yes it is something that the clinical education staff basically admits. The list this year for core rotations (i.e. places where you have to do your required rotations) is not that extensive. Unfortunately I have heard horror stories about previous students who were dropped last minute from rotations. In fact, a site was just dropped last week which can definitely be a problem for students planning on rotating there in january of this year.

It doesn't really affect how students are treated or taught - but it definitely limits where you can rotate.

THe only thing that worried me was the really short interviews, each person had maybe average 15 minutes, I hope they got a feel for each applicant.

Was it a group interview? Don't worry about the 15 minute interview. They can learn enough about your personality and mannerisms without diving into an hour long interview. Trust me when I say that you don't want an hour interview. They are hard and really suck. If you got an interview, then the school thinks you are more than qualified to attend LECOM. They just wanna see how you interact in person

Hey everyone,

I went to Erie this weekend and scoped out the school and surrounding area. I got accepted to AZCOM, and just felt like it was a better fit for me personally. LECOM is a great school and it was a hard decision to make. Congrats to those who got in and to those soon to interview. Good luck to all of us 2014 kids!

Hey just got an interview for 11/13! so excited!..anyone else that date? For anyone who has already interviewed there what were your impressions?! 👍🙂

I just submitted my secondary last night. How long does it take to hear back from them?

I was wondering if anyone knew of a LECOM number I could call to contact them... for some reason I am having a hard time finding one on the website.

Ditto. I'm in a bit of a jam though, because I'm already scheduled for an interview in upstate PA the last week of October, and I'm not sure I can afford two trips out there.

Anybody know how flexible Erie is in rescheduling interview dates, and what day of the week interviews are generally held?

They are really good about rescheduling. They had initally offered me 11/5, but I already have an interview at NYCOM that day. I dealt with a woman named Amy who was really nice and quickly offered another date. Not sure the exact days they interview, the first date they offered me was a thursday, the second is a friday.

I found this number in one of my emails from LECOM-Erie...
"You may contact the Office of Admissions at (814) 866-6641 Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time"

Thank you so much, I just called them and they were able to help me fix the problem with my application.

Speaking of which, how long did it take you guys to hear back after your secondary was completed?

What is H&P?
LECOM has a 2 week H&P (history and physical course) It is geared to get you into doing patient encounters and to get you geared up to be able to pass the step II practical exam. LECOM also has you do a CODA course (clinical osteopathic diagnostis applications), and ophthomology practical, and a genital exam practical as well as clinical skills lab and shadowing in a real office seeing patients each semester. After taking Dr. Ortoski's clinical skills and seeing 12 patients for the final, the step II CS exam was a super easy task. LECOM really gets you ready for the real thing and theirs is harder to pass.

H&P is currently taken from M1 semester 2 through M2. You learn how to do all the physical exams and history taking. CODA has been replaced with SPEC, which seems to be the same thing: sensitive exams + optho.

oh man, just got snail-mailed the rejection, im so confused. i dont know why i got rejected. my stats arent bad and i have amazing LORs and ECs, i must've really bombed the interview geez. 31/3.5 i mean i was shy but i didnt know it was going to be THIS bad.

You're welcome... I got the secondary on 9/2...submitted it on 9/12 (had sent my LOR's in ahead of time)...under review 9/17...My status changed to "congrats you've been scheduled for an interview" on 9/24. With LECOM- Bradenton, my status didn't say that until after they had called to offer an interview, but with Erie there was no phone call just an email which didn't even come until the 28th (better late than never I guess!).

That's too bad, sorry! What is your status at other schools? Did you apply allopathic as well?

Actually H&P is now offered Year 1 semester 1 until year 2 semester 2. They expanded it this year at the request of the current 2nd years.

Hey there. I haven't been on SDN since August, but was just scanning through and saw some talk/concern about PBL. Just wanted to give a little shout-out from the back of the lecture hall and say that anatomy is going fine for me!

I was going to write more, but I'm tired and have to study. Haha. 🙂 But for those of you who just signed up for PBL, don't worry. All is well in PBL world, and when anatomy is over (2 weeks!!), life will be grand.

Just interviewed here today. Interviews were two admins and one student, not group as other interview dates had.

All the admissions faculty are really nice and it was relaxed.

The wellness center.... is AMAZING.

It's possible we saw you today, bleeker. I saw a group of students wearing ACUs.

I don't wear ACU's to school. The students who do are usually in the the ANG recruiting program. I did see some interviewees going upstairs to the library from the OPP lab as I was going to the OPP lab for surface anatomy lab. Good luck!

Agree. If you wanna read a synopsis of the first semester of H&P, look back a couple pages at the post I made

Might have been me or a first year I know. Depends on what time of the day it was

Shouldn't you be somewhere fantasizing about other people's genitals and genital heat.

Current Med students: do the prof check their email regularly? I emailed thank you notes to the interviewers because I wanted to make sure they got them while the interview day was more or less fresh in their mind.
Usually they do check regularly, however they might not respond to a thank you note because it might seem that they are un fairly helping you, or they just might be lazy.
