LECOM - Erie Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To any layman, Bleeker, you sound like a dumba** . I guess you could "hit" the heart by traveling through the esophagus and passing through the CARDIAC sphincter as well. It is called the CARDIAC SPHINCTER, RIGHT? Look, there is no need to protect your hombre. He tried to act like a smart a** and made a mistake. Its only human to think that the spleen is part of the digestive tract, like you pointed out it is confusing how they use the word splenic in there, and I am considerate of the fact that many Lecom students don't even dissect cadavers. But if they did, they would know much better than to make an inaccurate statement twice. To be fair to lecom, its staff and students, I will assume that you and Slevin are not the cream of the crop.😀

Pre-med correcting med students FAIL.

So just got the Email saying my interview was on November 5th. I remember reading some where on one of the forums, but cant seem to find it again, that there was a hotel nearby LECOM that has a shuttle that drops you off at LECOM's back door and will pick you up again after the interview. Anyone know what hotel that was?

Also, Iv been told that the area only really has two seasons...Winter and not Winter. Should I expect it to be Winter in early November?

For all of those who had their status change to "you've been scheduled for an interview" but never received a call or email for a few days.... I emailed the admissions office and a really nice lady told me that due to some IT problems, the emails with the interview dates never were sent out. I got mine today, 11/5 but had to reschedule for 11/20 since I will be at NYCOM that day.

Anyone else going then?🙂

Again you don't know what you are arguing about. The cardiac sphincter is named that way because that's the cardiac portion of the stomach. Actually also, we (LDP and ISP) all dissect cadavers in lab. How many cadavers have you dissected? It's called the splenic flexure because it rests against the spleen. You are arguing against me when I'm pretty sure I have just taken an anatomy lab practical and written test over the cavities and done very well. You don't know what you are talking about and the only thing you can do is call out people and make stupid claims to protect yourself, which in turn makes you look childish. You are arguing with med students at a school you aren't going to. I'm pretty sure we know more about the school than you do. I don't know what you consider cream of the crop, but don't base everything off of MDapps info. I have validated LECOM's choice of accepting me on many occasions.

yeah...and hell yeah!
Flying into Erie is comparable to flying into any city around Erie from my experience. It may be $20-50 more, but to me that is worth it then driving and renting a car.

Also, many of the hotels (like Marriott) will pick you up from the airport with their shuttle and can take you to the interview as well. I'm sure other hotels have this option as well.

I stayed at the Day's Inn and some of the people that also stayed there said there was a shuttle and I think it was free but they mentioned you needed to call the hotel in advance and arrange it. It may be worth looking into. The Days Inn was cheap but a nice place to stay.

What is H&P?

Sorry your question was neglected. I believe that it means History and Physical.
The patients medical history (medications currently taking, allergies, family history, past pertinent history, ect) and a physical examination.

Call the main number and speak to Colleen, ask her about hotels in the area. Some give discounts if you are in town on LECOM business. She would know of the ones to stay in

I just submitted my secondary and I was curious if you receive a confirmation e mail or something? I received a receipt for my fee payment, but not the actual secondary. Is this normal?

Yeah, I dont think you get a confirmation Email for the secondary. Just check your status on their website in a couple days and it should say they have recieved your secondary and are currently reviewing it.

Does anyone know anything about the Seton Hill campus? I really like PBL and Pittsburgh would work better for me and my wife, but at the interview they only show one picture. Do any of you attend that campus and if so what do you think?

I know there's a LECOM-Seton Hill thread in the Osteo Forum, you might want to check there and see if you get any responses from some students.

how long did it take to hear back from them after submitting your secondaries? I am losing my cool and it's only been 5 hours since I submitted. hehehe :diebanana:

yup....did that yesterday...all you need to do is say you are interviewing there and you get a special rate and a shuttle....pretty amazing

So - I'm interviewing tomorrow... anyone else?

Is it true that they are still doing the group interview?

So i submitted my secondary a few days ago. I checked my status update today and one of the things it says im missing is 6 credits of behavioral sciences. so does this basically mean i cant even get accepted because i dont meet their prereqs??? and why would they send me a secondary if i dont meet their requirements in the first place?

I got an invite to interview on 11/9. Coming from Texas and kind of scared about the weather, won't lie...

Just for further details, for Days Inn, once you've made a reservation you can just let them know your flight information and what times you need to be everywhere, etc. so they can arrange the shuttle service.

For those of you who were accepted for 2010, what pathway were you accepted to? I want PBL at Erie and was curious how many others may have taken seats from those who are posting...

I would imagine the weather will be crappy then. I hear the first snowfall will start around Halloween. Are you flying into Erie or somewhere else and driving? I flew into Pittsburgh last year and drove to Erie. Luckily I interviewed between snowstorms. On the way back to Pittsburgh, it started to snow. Just to let you know, we have quite a few ppl from Texas here. I know someone from Austin and another from Houston in my class. I'm from Arkansas myself. Just bring a coat, hat, and gloves just in case the weather is bad. Good luck!

You just have to have them completed by the time you matriculate. I got the same thing. They have you sign an agreement after your accepted saying you understand if you don,t finish their prereqs they can cancel your acceptance.

Hey last year I hear they were giving out goodie bags to people who interviewed, are they still doing that?

They didnt mention a goody bag...we shall see

and Moonshobo, I heard it is a group interview.

I spoke to someone in admissions and they said that they were going back to two-on-one interviews starting in October.

I'm leaving tomorrow for my LECOM interview on October 2nd.

Looks like I'll be doing 2 on 1? If someone else could confirm that would be nice!! Thanks so much!

arg - i really hope it's a one-on-one...

Last year all the interviews were two on one. They were really easy and it allowed more interaction than one faculty member and one student. Just make sure you know that two on one means two faculty members and one interviewee, not the other way around

Good luck to everyone interviewing!!!!!!

I can't wait till you guys join us in the Class 2014!!!!!!!!!!

I love it when I see interviewee's roaming the halls... kinda cute.

Anyway if any of you interviewing on the 2nd want to grab dinner tomorrow and ask me questions about the school, let me know and we can meet up somewhere.

Just PM me

Good luck with the interviews. I remember I was in your shoes less than a year ago. Now I'm on the home stretch of anatomy, learning about the head and neck with less than 3 weeks til the NBME Gross Anatomy Shelf exam.

Also I can meet up with interviewees tomorrow nite as well if you would like a perspective on anatomy and adjusting to school. PM me as well

Yes H&P is short for History and Physical. For the first semester, we are learning how to take a complete history, including medical, surgical, and social history. We have practice sessions interspersed throughout the semester. We have a H&P book with case studies and we work them on each other, with one person acting as the patient and the other person as the student doctor. At the end of this semester, we have our H&P I final where we go to a clinic here in town and take a complete history on a standardized patient, come up with possible differential diagnoses, and write up a SAP note (it is usually a SOAP note, but we aren't doing physical examinations yet so we can't write out our objective findings) in 20 minutes. In the next semesters, we will learn how to do a physical exam, take vital signs, perform visual, auditory, musculoskeletal, and other tests. Slevin will know more about that part then me.

Yeah that's the gist of it. Last year we did both, learn how to take the history and preform the physical exam. This is the first year where they are doing H&P in the first semester, last year H&P started in the 2nd semester.

Are the interviewees buying dinner?

I heard the interviewee's saw some OPP going on in lab today. What did everyone think of the school?

haha - yeah a professor with a really cute English accent took us to the OPP lab.

that's a lot of touching and feeling of fellow students!! 😱 Is that like, awkward for you guys initially?

As for my impressions - I really liked LECOM a lot. But I am scared, because the interview was like 10-15 minutes long. Why are they so short? I don't think they really got a good idea of who I was in 15 minutes...

You get used to it pretty quickly. Considering you probably saw sacrum OMM that involves some of the more awkward areas, but even so its something that you become used to and when you're palpating you're thinking of the anatomy underneath.

OPP lab wasn't awkward at first. There were a couple times when the techniques we were doing seemed awkward for a split second, but you just do them and don't worry about it. There will be times when you can almost feel your partners "private areas".
The interview is short, but trust me when I say a short interview is better than a long interview. I had an interview at the University of Arkansas that lasted an hour. That one sucked because they were able to ask a lot of off the wall questions that caught me off guard. My interview here was about 20 mins but that was more than enough time to show my enthusiasm for the school.

Edit: I wasn't trying to scare anyone off or offend anyone with my original post. I realized (with the help of another poster) some of the things I said was inappropriate. The bad thing about always working on guys is you don't get to feel the differences in the sexes. There is a need to work on guys vs girls, tall vs short, skinny vs fat, old vs young. The more you can experience, the better you will be at the techniques. The gist of the original post was you need to realize we are becoming doctors and there is a need to get over any insecurity you have, for the benefit of your education and the benefit of your future patients.

There will be times when you can feel the heat from your partner's genitals on your hands when doing sacrum stuff. It's even worse if you're a guy and have only had guy partners. I did almost make my partner pee his pants bc I was pressing too hard on his bladder haha.

LOL!!!!! A little too much detail there!!!!

I have a question (for bleeker or anyone else with an answer)....Do you switch partners in OPP lab so you get and idea of what it is like dealing with multiple body types? I would think that would be advantageous to the learning process. Also, do you get to pick your partner or is it assigned? And is everyone in OPP lab at the same time regardless of your pathway or are there more than one class? Same questions goes for anatomy!!

Sorry so many questions!

Bleeker....The world just got smaller. I was talking to a blond girl with curly hair named Angie about the medical school I got into and it turns out she knows you!!! I'm going to get her to send you a text from me. Crazy huh!

If you're in LDP, you sit next to the same people you dissect with you palpate, you learn H&P with, etc... (matched up based on alphabet). In OPP you'll have subgroups of like 16 people. You'll rotate your official partner within the subgroup, but people within a subgroup usually go around and are encouraged to palpate each other to experience different body types.
