Lincoln Memorial DeBusk (LMU-DCOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why did the white coat ceremony get moved?

Admin decided to change things up. I'm sure they had their reasons. They probably want to make it more of a celebratory thing for finishing second year. I wouldn't worry much about it.

Hey all, I am looking forward to attending DCOM this summer! Congrats to everyone accepted, I am looking forward to meeting my future classmates. I have some questions for current students if you go through this forum. I know that everyone studies and spends their time differently but, for the average student how likely is it for them to participate in school clubs? How are the research opportunities at LMU and is there any collaboration with University of Tennessee? Are many of you able to get elective rotations you want? Sorry for the loaded question. I am really excited about starting up and going really rural haha. Thanks for the help.

I know that a lot of students participate in the many clubs here. There is always something going on and there's a club for everything. There are also community service and fundraising events going on all the time. You'll definitely have time and opportunity for that.

Many say that DCOM isn't the place to go for research, but I think that is highly subjective depending on what kind of research. The anatomy department here is huge and have stuff going on nonstop, but they are all mostly anthropologists so its that kind of research. Lots of cadaver research going on. The only affiliation with UT will be if you find it yourself or work with a professor that does research in collaboration with UT which at least half of the anatomy professors do. I know MS students who go down there all the time. We also have an imaging center so I know people do research there all the time. I just wouldn't expect too many clinical research opportunities like sponsored drug trials or inventing a new medical device. However you can definitely find opportunities and create your own. Many people want research to be given to them, well in reality you need to be active and come up with an idea and professors will help you. So in my opinion there's definitely good research here, most people just don't want to put in the hard work getting it going. Oh and yes students are regularly getting published!

I have two unrelated questions for current students. Is the MBA worth getting? and Is there a Crossfit gym near campus or a club on campus that meets?

It is COMLEX rules that you can only take it 4 times in a given school year. It is DCOM rules that you can only take it 3 times in a given year, the 4th retake will occur a year later after you have studied more. NBOME actually states you can take COMLEX as many times as you want. The percentages you mentioned are not entirely correct, but close. While I know several students in my class who did well (including a 750+), not everyone passed the first time. A couple people didn't pass the second time and are gearing up for another retake. While this may be something you might be concerned with, DCOM did prepare us as best they could to do well (hence some individuals did in the 700's, as previously mentioned). A general way of looking at it (and this is not always the case), if you start medical school and are consistently struggling to pass, it is best that you evaluate your learning style and try to figure it out as soon as possible. From those I know who struggled with COMLEX, they typically struggled with coursework and/or were too busy with other things (leadership, volunteering, EC's). It is best that you avoid getting involved in EC activities until you know how you will be able to handle the rigors of medical school. No one cares that you were the family medicine club leader or EM treasurer if you struggle to learn the material and failed COMLEX. However, this is just my opinion and how I look at this process.
can I ask more about how DCOM prepares students for the boards? I know the school provides students with combank, anything else? How many weeks of dedicated board study time are students given and the end of 2nd year, before 3rd year starts?

I can't comment on the MBA because I'm not in the program. I do know that it's extremely cheap compared to other MBAs. I have never seen a crossfit gym advertised but there are 2 gyms for students. One is on the main campus and the other is at the Inn.

They prepare you for boards by teaching the relevant material in classes and covering almost all concepts seen on Step 1. They do give you COMBANK but your time is better spent using the typical USMLE qbanks like UWorld, Rx, and Kaplan. Not sure how many weeks they give out for dedicated but I think it's more than the 6 weeks I got.

There is a crossfit gym, there are a number of students that recently competed in the regional competition. You will not have trouble continuing your training.

That's awesome!!! Do you know the name of the gym?

DCOM does its best at covering more common topics covered on COMLEX. There is no way they can cover everything. While it is important the school teaches you the bulk of material, there is a high level of responsibility on the student to study and find out what works best for preparing for boards. They do provide COMBANK, but this is really not a good source to prepare. The best I have found is UWORLD. I would highly recommend you do as many questions as you can as you gear up for boards. I did 6500 questions and came out with a score I am happy with and can match into the specialty of my choice. The top score in my class, that I am aware of was a 740+, he did around 10,000 questions. Exhaust Uworld (maybe even 2 times) and then combank and other questions banks. First aid is a great study aid as you do questions. I would not recommend doing questions or First aid until at least the end of your first semester 2nd year. It is too hard to balance learning the material the first time and board study. Learn it well the first time and then add on board studies. Other than COMBANK and teaching the material, the only other thing DCOM does it hold some review sessions and give you about 6 weeks of light coursework to study for boards. We had about a month and a half of only one - two classes a week to get ready for the test. In exchange for those weeks of study, we did have to do a two week course following COMLEX to make up for the work. For the most part we were all checked out, so the 2 weeks was really worthless. Hopefully they will revise what was taught and make it more intriguing... but lets face it, you're exhausted at that point and it doesn't matter if they present the material in a clever quip and musical, you still aren't going to get much from it. Hope this helps answer your question.

Has anyone from the 4/1 interview heard anything?

Accepted today! Interviewed on April 8th.

I received a phone call from Dean Kessler, but haven't received a confirmation email. Did anyone else receive a phone call but no email?

I didn't receive an email until at least a couple of days after the phone call. Congrats!

Congrats!! Yeah I got a call first, then the snail mail and email came after.

Hey I'm on the waitlist and am thinking about going for the masters at LMU. Anyone have any information about the biomedical professions masters? Thanks!

I was waiting until possibly the end of May to hear back from my states waitlist before committing to housing at DCOM. Any advice??

Ideally, when would be the latest to apply for housing at the University Inn?

I'd look in the thread in the postbac section of the forum for more info on the program - but the gist of it is this: the program isn't as sure of a safetynet as it used to be unless you are an Anatomical Sciences student. The class size for the Masters program made a huge jump from about 60-70 students to 140 students this year. Taking out that about 20 of them are vet students, that still leaves 120 students in the program. Your admissions to DCOM through the masters will depend on your MCAT and overall performance - meaning getting a B, preferably an A in medical gross anatomy while standing out amongst your peers.

From what I know, a lot of students from the biomedical program are waitlisted.

There were a few units available as late as July last year, but I wouldn't bank on it so I'd get a move on. Check dcomdo.com for off-campus housing or join the Class of 2020 page on facebook for listings! You'll hear mixed stories about the Inn - it'll depend really on how much you stay in your room versus being on campus. The walls are thin, the hallways sometimes smell funny, the cell service is zero inside the building, water stops running occasionally, and at some point, someone will set the fire alarm off and you'll all have to leave the building to stand outside at 3:00AM while waiting for the fire department to come shut it off the week of an exam. I personally could not live there.

I would like to offer a rebuttal about the Inn in case someone was seriously thinking about moving in. I have a double room instead of a single room and I study in my apartment instead of on campus. The walls are somewhat thin but not paper thin. The only time I have felt there was a noise issue, was when I was in the hallway and walked past someones room and they had their tv or computer cranked way up. The hallways smell funny because someone cooked something funny and didn't open their windows or use their air vent over the stove. There is cell service inside the buildings, if you have verzion. If you don't, you will sadly be outside making your calls.
Up to this point, we have had less than 5 incidents with the water heater not working; they do get fixed within the day. Up to this point, we have not had a fire alarm go off at 3 am or the week leading up to an exam. Yes, it does go off. I would say that we are 6 times total. 1 person cooked bacon using the oven instead of the stove (that's a nono), 1 person almost melted their blender because they forgot and set it on the hot stove, 1 person was cooking something and just left their apartment and their whole room filled with smoke, I missed one because I had lab, then the last 2 were due to an unknown cause.

I'm also in the same situation. When is it too late to start looking for housing? When is the deadline for submitting the health forms and drug/background check?

July 25th
Where can I find this info? Is the academic calendar for 2016-2017 posted online? Also, anyone know if there is any leniency with missing orientation? For a legitimate reason, obviously.

Do Lee and Mars apartments generally have the same problem as DCOM housing?

Not sure what you mean. Lee and Mars are both part of campus housing - they're located right next to the Inn and are about a mile away from the main campus.

Someone posted this on the FB page earlier today. It looks like we actually start the 26th, but I was close. http://www.lmunet.edu/academics/sch...athic-medicine/do/academics/academic-calendar

And from what I've heard, in the past if you missed orientation then your spot was automatically given to someone on the waitlist, so like you HAVE to be there. But I'm not sure what your reason for missing would be, so for all I know maybe they'd take it into account and let you miss. You'd have to contact admissions (Janette would definitely have an answer for you) and ask.

Does anyone know if they allow you to defer acceptance for a year?

Does anyone know if they allow you to defer acceptance for a year?

Hello everyone! I was probably the first one accepted to the c/o 2020 (accepted for the c/o 2019 but deferred to the c/o 2020). I am looking forward to meeting you all! I will be attending the anatomy boot camp that begins July 5th, 2016. Anyone else?

It appears so, according to this guy anyway

Anybody move off the wait-list yet or get an email from DCOM? I looked at the past few pages and didn't see it mentioned.

I was wait-listed August or so and just got an email from DCOM asking if I wanted them to notify my undergrad of DCOM's decision.

I have a few other acceptances but this is my top choice and felt I made a good impression here so I'm hoping that email wasn't bad news!

I'm not sure about non-Master students, but the waitlist is supposed to start moving after the Spring semester is over for the master students that got waitlisted. There's still one more interview this upcoming Friday, but that should be the last day of official interviews.

Once you send in the matriculation agreement how do you access Certified Background for all the extra miscellaneous information required? Does the school send you a login or are we supposed to already have one?

The school should soon send you an email that has a link for it, then you sign up!

Anyone else freaking out about the May 15 deadline for the titers, physical, drug test, and background check? I'll start my titers next week but I'm not sure if they'll be out by May 15th. I'm losing so much sleep over this. I'm terrified that some little thing would go wrong causing one of my requirements to be incomplete by May 15th, and the school end up rescinding my acceptance. :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

I think you'll be fine. As long as you have them started, the May 15th deadline won't matter if you need to get booster shots. The deadline gets moved back if you need boosters/2nd titers done. Most of my titers (minus varicella) came back in 2 days and the varicella one came back in about a week, though I suppose this could be dependent on your lab.

Please don't stress over this. The school wont rescind your acceptance. If you are working towards getting it all completed, you'll be fine. However, if you procrastinate (which you aren't) then that's not good.

On a different topic, if any of you were able to make it out to Accepted Student's Day on 4/30, I really hope you had fun and it was a pleasure to meet you all.
For you waitlisted folks, admissions said that the interview committee needs to meet over the last interview group and after that they will be able to start reviewing waitlisted applicants.

Hello,
I am currently on the waitlist, my interview was in early August. I was just curious when they start taking students off of the wait list and what my chances are of being taken off? Since it's already May I was planning on reapplying this cycle if I didn't get off of the waitlist at LMU-DCOM. Any advice/knowledge?!

I interviewed in October and was waitlisted, got an acceptance call last night! I believe it was the first round of waitlist reviews. Hang in there!

Ah well congrats! Do you know if the wait list is ranked? Or do they review all of the applications from the wait list again?

AFAIK it is not ranked, they review everyone. It can go all the way up until the beginning of classes. I'm in state, ~3.4 GPA 507 MCAT if that helps.

Hey guys! I have a couple of questions.

Anyone have recommendations on housing? I don't plan on having any roommates.

Also, I was given a phone number to call to order my white coat + DCOM patch. However, no one picks up when I call that number. Could anyone offer some guidance/recommendations in this matter?
