LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Happy holidays everyone!! Congrats on all the new acceptances 👍

I am anxiously awaiting to hear back from Janette about how to take care of this huge deposit, though I'm sure she's on holiday break and not exactly wanting to worry herself with work things. 🙂 I have no idea how I'm going to pay this thing with the current bills I have and no loan money anywhere in the near future. Will they take fairly small but consistent payments each month if your finances really don't allow you to make big payments, do you think?

I also heard of someone else who DCOM worked with on the deposit. Don't underestimate how many people out there support you and will help you meet that deposit goal! 🙂

If you don't figure something else out - I will pass out an SDN offering plate 😛

Can a current student tell me how much SDL/PBL stuff is in the curriculum? I know that you meet in small groups after block exams to go over them. Thanks!

Curriculum: Early on FMHC (Foundations of Modern Healthcare) includes some guest lecturers about various topics. One was about Appalachian culture. She made the point to say that Appalachia isn't all rural. But we did address trust and access to care in the course. EPC (Essentials of Patient Care), which goes through all four semesters, includes doing a history and physical examination of standardized patients. They're local people, but the things you screen for (hypertension, smoking, etc.) are not uniquely rural problems. I don't know what emphasis the systems courses will place on rural healthcare, but overall, the emphasis is on the body, which is what you need no matter where you go. Though OPP will be a great tool for rural healthcare.

Rotations: You shouldn't have any trouble getting a core site in a rural area. That's what I intend to do, and that's where the real rural emphasis can be taken care of. Like anything else in medicine, you need to learn rural healthcare through practice. Additional opportunities to build on this come in the 4th year, with a rural primary care (FM or IM) rotation and two rotations (4 weeks each, back to back) at community hospitals, where you have to take care of everything yourself because there's no one else upstairs to dump patients on. Treat and release, choose to admit them, or transport them to another facility. But even a transport has to be stabilized first.

All right! Thanks, Grace and Styria!

After much deliberation, I am regretfully declining my acceptance offer to DCOM. This is an absolutely amazing school, I just wish it was in an area with slightly more job opportunities for my husband! 🙂 Good luck to everyone else interviewing here! And congrats to everyone who has been accepted....this is truly a great school!

she let me split up the payments into 2 separate deposits within 30 days of each other

That would still be really hard for me to come up with honestly (the big city cost of living is killing me!) I hope I can work something else out. It's poor timing because the admissions folks are on their break and my 30 days is quickly coming to an end. 🙁

Hahaha, sounds good. I take checks, money orders, and all major credit cards. I am just really not wanting to trouble my parents with this because they already helped me pay off my credit cards that started to get a little high due to interest (sadly enough because of past MCAT fees/AACOMAS fees/AACOMAS fees again for reapp, lol). I am slowly repaying them while the balance is on a 0% interest deal, so asking for MORE money doesn't seem like a feasible option. Oh well, it'll all work out. Paying the deposit is no thing- I'M IN!! 😀

Well, I've been without power since last Friday thanks to this Winter storm that wreaked havoc on eastern TN and western VA. I just got it back late last night so I wanted to get on here and tell everyone Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone enjoys the time with family and increasing their risk of heart disease by eating two dozen sausage balls like me!!! 🙂
At this point, since I missed posting Merry Christmas wishes, I'll say Happy New Year. And I hate you for mentioning sausage balls. 🙁 I love them but didn't get any this year. I may have to make a batch when I get back to East TN.

Paying the deposit is no thing- I'M IN!! 😀
Girl! Don't be afraid to ask for them for it. If you start working this coming semester instead of finishing school, you'll be able to pay them back!!! And of course, talk to the admissions office. Maybe they can come up with something.

First semester Histology, Gross Anatomy, and Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine all had PBL type sessions. These were sporadicly scheduled.

TBH, while some parts of these PBL style learning sessions are nice, for the most part I felt like I'd rather be going through the stuff on my own time.

Before I got in here I thought PBL would be a decent option. After getting here, I realized that lecture style learning is much more efficient than PBL once you get to know the professor.

My learning style is geared more towards lecture based learning than PBL learning. Is this going to be a disadvantage to me at LMU-DCOM? I was under the impression that the curriculum was almost exclusively lecture based.

Don't worry, it is 99% lecture based. The 1st years this year only had 3 group case studies where they were given a grade based on that assignment.

Your small anatomy groups will meet weekly, but it is to study anatomy/histology and also not usually for a grade. We meet in groups even less frequently during 2nd year. I wouldn't worry about it.

The small groups that meet after the block exams are a totally different thing, BTW. That is just to go over the exam that everyone took and to look at the questions and discuss them. You are not given a grade for that, but actually get points added onto your exam just for showing up to the team exam.

Hope this helps!

Good Luck! 😀

It is. When J said it was sporadic, (s)he wasn't kidding. There were 3 case studies for MFM, each being 3 parts. Individual reading/quiz, group quiz, and a case study. I think there may have been about 10-12 sessions for anatomy/histology. That may be a high estimate.

The majority of your material will be presented in lecture. The next biggest bulk is hands-on (anatomy lab & OPP lab). PBL makes up a very small portion. You'll want to do well in PBL because it's a good way to round out your grade. But it's not a substantial chunk of your grade nor is it the vehicle for the bulk of material being presented.

If I've missed something, I hope one of my colleagues will correct me.

😱 Christmas without sausage balls? You poor thing.. that shouldn't happen to anyone! God bless the person who decided to mix bisquick, cheese, and sausage!

It looks like vols got some perfectly round sausage balls in his avatar.😉

I am just really not wanting to trouble my parents with this...

I know that feeling well. However, they'll probably tell you the same thing my mom tells me when I ask for help with school expenses; "just a handful of years... and you'll be doing the 'taking care of' part!" 🙂

I appreciate the replies. That's what I thought. The only reason I ask is because I found out that VCOM has a good amount of PBL/SDL sessions, and that was not mentioned at the interview day. I just want to have all my I's dotted and T's crossed before I make a decision. Thanks!

You'll get the deposit fee back with your student loan money unless you decide to forego it (you'll pay it back 4-25 years later with interest). So if you have to borrow from your parents, you'll be able to pay them back in August. Will the balance still be on a 0% interest due then?

Which is funny since 'he' is actually a she! 😀

Ugh, I know, seriously. My parents are older (considering my age- they're in their 60s with some health issues) so sometimes I get in this rush to get to the point in my life where I'm more financially stable in order to give back to them. They have done so much for me and I desperately want to relieve any of their financial burdens. Fortunately for them, I think they are quite okay money wise, so I don't know how I'll repay them exactly! Any thoughts?

Yes the balance will still be on a 0% interest thing by then, but unfortunately, I am not sure how much room they have left on that thing. They actually paid off 2 credit cards with (even though most people are weird about talking about their debt...) around 3K total on them. Unless it happens to have a 5K max, I couldn't use it probably. But given their phenomenal credit it might be an option. What I actually might be able to do though is pay what I can on a payment plan right now, then put the balance on the 0% card, THEN pay that off in August with loans. My life is one big perpetual cycle of debt and repayment, which is so against my financial beliefs!! GAH. I just have to force myself to live in denial about my current undergrad debt and the impending med school debt- it's all fake money anyway that just gets circulated around in the air until I eventually pay it of right?? 🙂

Wow! I thought we (women) were trying to end the woman as sex object prevalence? Oh well...no offense taken I'm just surprised.

I just sent in my deposit out of our savings. I also transfered my cc balance, of which I put all my med school application stuff on, about 5K including prep class, MCAT, etc. and am planning to pay back the 2K from financial aid and the CC since I'm not used to carrying a balance. Its driving me crazy. I, unlike most of you, do not have 40+ years to pay off debt. I also had a question about transferring prior student loan debt and how that will affect how much we can borrow of rmedical school. Does anyone know?

I'm pretty much in the same boat on this part, too! My mom (father passed away) could sure use a good vacation, some home renovations, some repairs on her driveway, some land behind the house cleared off, a little debt paid off, etc.

Taking care of my family and her is one of the top 3 reasons I'm med school bound! 😉

But given their phenomenal credit it might be an option.

If they have good credit and they're older... it is an option. The limit is probably what they wanted it to be. My mom had a card without a limit for awhile but recently bumped it down to a $5,000.00 limit. I don't actually know why considering credit score is based on your available debt to used debt ratio. I would think having a card with no credit limit on it would be a pretty substantial boost to a credit score!

Either way... talk to them, it's likely that they can request a credit increase and help you out without taking anything out of their pocket!

You can't really transfer other debt to your med school loans. The school caps your certified loans (subsidized, unsubsidized, and grad plus). If you take other loans outside of these sources you are required by law to report it and the school must decrease your ceritified loan dollars by that much thus negating any benefit. So basically you are stuck with what the school budget indicates. The only exception us if you apply through financial aid for a hardship, but you have to have documented proof of a situation requiring additional funding (buying a new car and needing cash doesn't count...). I'd consolidate the other loans an make the payments more affordable until you graduate.

Can anyone comment on research opportunities at DCOM?

DCOM offers a $2000 stipend for a summer research fellowship opportunity that allows you to do a 2 month research at any research university or clinic that you want or with one of the faculty profs. We've only had this program for 2 summers so far and we've already had students do their research at Harvard, Stanford, Oxford (UK), Vanderbilt, UT Knox, and several other universities/clinics. This fellowship also provides you with funding for a research poster and if requested can help you pay for your travel funds if you were to participate in any national research conferences.

Our faculty also constantly mass emails us about research programs and poster presentation opportunities outside of our school. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reply. I would love to do a research fellowship. Who can I contact for more information? Should I just start searching for summer research projects and then contact the lab PI's, or is there someone at DCOM that can guide me in the right direction based on my area of interest?

HAPPY NEW YEARRRRR!!!!!!!!!! This year for sure is gonna be so much more exciting than last.

one question, I was wondering if we get higher credit points if we loan from financial aid?

Dr. Tietelbaum is the dean of research so he would be the best guy to contact. I was awarded the research fellowship last year so you can PM me with any questions that you might have.

If you find a lab that you are interested in just call or email the PI and ask if they would want you to help them out for the summer.

Happy New Year to all! :soexcited:

Remember: For those that live here in the south....Eat your black eyed peas today!
And for the transplants.....you will love them!!! Add some cornbread for good measure👍

Will they take fairly small but consistent payments each month if your finances really don't allow you to make big payments, do you think?

congrats!

call Janette. she was able to work out a payment plan with me (I was able to split the payment over 3 months). if you explain your financial situation, she is usually able to work out a payment schedule as long as 1. you are able to send in an initial payment that's substantial - I sent in $500, and 2. you send her something writing stating that you will do so. that was the deal when i had the same problem last year, anyway 🙂 i applied late and got in in feb, so i ended up sending in my last deposit ~may.

Can a current student tell me how much SDL/PBL stuff is in the curriculum? I know that you meet in small groups after block exams to go over them. Thanks!

one semester down, and i can tell you:
no PBL to date, none anticipated. you are assigned pretty much the same small group for two classes that utilize groupwork, but it's not graded. our basic sciences course has 3 case studies/quizzes worth 12% of our grade in total, and they varied in difficulty level; the breakdown was 1% for an individual quiz, 1% for a group quiz, and 2% for a group assignment done over 2hrs PER case study. there was also a peer eval grade, so for this course groupwork did factor almost as much as an exam towards your grade, i.e. don't yell at anyone in your group, it'll come back to bite you 🙂

small groups of 11 students meet after each exam to essentially take the exam over as a group; it's part of the admin's ongoing eval of the curriculum, since we're still working out kinks, and it supposedly has something to do with an algorithm that tells the profs which exam questions should be tossed. you get something like 2% grade bump for attending, -5% taken off for skipping.

OPP obviously requires partners - but it rotates every week.

anatomy lab - you're with a group of 40 students who have to share the lab at one time, 2 scheduled hrs a week.

there were two graded standardized patient encounters - obviously not lectures. i'd say i spent about 10hrs prepping/practicing for each of those, fyi.

other than that, it's lectures. first semester we were generally in lecture from 7:30 or 8:30am til 11:30, and labs/group sessions were in the afternoon. the next three semesters look to be almost exclusively lectures - anywhere between 5-8 hrs a day (!).

this might have been a little more detail than you were looking for... but hopefully it helps!

good luck to anyone interviewing in the next few weeks - i had mine in feb, and got in a week later! definitely not too late in the game 🙂

I'm taking my MCAT this month and submitting my secondary this week. I know time is not on my side but who knows maybe 2010 will be my year:xf:

This info is exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for the reply! I'm geared more towards lecture learning, so this is great news for me. I was surprised to learn how much PBL/SDL stuff went on at VCOM...after my interview day when I think it should have been presented. I just didn't want any surprises. Thanks again! I believe that I now have the info that I need to make a final decision. I will see you next fall! 🙂

👍 Not to appear a DCOM fan boy... but, I've messaged/contacted a lot of students from a lot of schools to talk to them about their opinions on their school and I've gotten quite a few bad reviews about VCOM. Two specifically said their concern was with the way curriculum is given... I never thought to ask, but I have to wonder now if it's PBL related.

I've only had one person tell me they flat out regretted going to DCOM and his reasoning wasn't curriculum. I'm not sure how much that means to you - but, it means a lot to me! 🙂

In the interest of full disclosure, I was told by staff that the curriculum changes were going to quiet down unless the Dean decides to keep changing things. The reason for the major overhaul of the curriculum has now left the faculty.

unfortunately, experiences with different curricula are always gonna be subjective, and that's what makes the decision making process so agonizing when you get those acceptance letters. for example, I've only heard good things about VCOM, particularly about their block system during first year (and the subsequent week long breaks after each - jealous!!) but my friend who's been telling me VCOM>DCOM is such an easygoing guy i'm not entirely sure i believe him 🙂 At any rate, minus the location and distance from friends/family, I'm happy with my decision - the staff for the most part are very supportive, the technology and new facilities make studying easier, etc. just go with your gut and impression of the student body when you interview, if nothing else helps you make up your mind. i remember thinking DCOM had the friendliest and most relaxed group of students of the schools i interviewed at, and that told me that they were being challenged but not overworked, and that the support system at the school itself (classmates, faculty, staff, financial aid office) was good enough to keep everyone smiling.

First of all. Happy New Year!

Second, for the students who already got accepted and sent the deposit,
when are you going to apply for financial aid?
Which ones are you going to apply?

I am little confused about which ones to apply subsidized/unsubsidized and F.G.Plus Loan (for sure)? Since sub and unsub still not enough to cover everything Plus Loan for sure, or get Plus Loan and Sub or Plus Loan and Unsub.
I am confused!
I applied for my pin code, but haven't applied for F.A. yet.

Any help appreciated.

Does the shuttle to the school take you back to the hotel after interviews in addition to picking you up, or is it a one way shuttle?

it will take you both ways.

I'm sure you got the same presentation, but the financial aid staff seemed genuinely invested into making sure all students - existing and incoming - got things figured out. I'm certain they can help you. Once you apply for financial aid and your information is submitted to DCOM you should get an award letter.

It isn't until then that you can really start answering and working through some of these questions. It will give you some idea of how much you need or, quite unlikely it seems, don't need. I gathered they'd help with every step of the way.

They did mention to us, probably to you as well, that they are no longer working with private institutions to do the government grad series of loans. They're working direct now so that does make a significant difference - you won't end up with 4 and 5 different lenders at the end!

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can file FAFSA until Feb. Upon receipt of my deposit, the admissions director sent an email saying that more information would be coming out in next few months.

The 2010-2011 FAFSA is online and could be submitted now if you had all of the necessary information. However, the deadline for employers to mail W2's is February 1st, so most people can't file their FAFSA until they have their W2's in hand and their tax paperwork completed.

I think the general approach is max out subsidized, then unsubsidized before going Grad Plus. The Grad Plus interest rate is usually higher than Stafford, IIRC. I think there are other benefits (wrt repayment) to taking the maximum Stafford loans. Pat Peace is super helpful with any questions you have so you may want to direct any questions to her.

Btw, I 😍 😍 😍 your avatar!

👍 Yep....

At what point will accepted students receive an information packet about all this stuff? I mainly am concerned currently about the health related stuff. I have some things to take care of before I will be cleared to be in the clinics and from what I understand, it usually has to be done by the time you matriculate? I am mainly referring to the HepB stuff and the TB stuff- is there a general physical form that has to be filled out? Time to establish health care here in the big city...oh the irony.

There will be a history and physical, vaccinations or titers to show immunity, some tests like for TB, and a drug panel.

For series vaccines like for HepB, the school is able to complete them after you've started. But you have plenty of time. 0, 1, and 5 months.

I figured they would be fairly lenient on the HepB series since it takes a while and some students get accepted late. My biggest concern is the whole physical partt- does that have to be completed and turned it prior to the beginning of classes? I don't have a health care provider where I'm living and I have a feeling establishing care (without insurance mind you) and getting done some of the stuff that I know I personally will have to have done might take a while.

If it's just the physical you're worried about, unless there are actual healthcare issues you need resolved, you can take the physical form to a clinic and let them know you need a comprehensive physical for med school. I took it to my school's health services and was able to get it done in about an hr and a half.

They wanted everything submitted by May 30th last year. But the letter in the forms packet was more threatening about the deadline than it needed to be. It caused them to get lots of phone calls from people trying to make sure everything was in, which made it harder to get everything done. If something's missing, they'll call you.

Establishing care only takes a history and physical. See what the provider (physician or nurse practicioner was fine for DCOM) says about your stuff. Chances are they'll sign off on the forms to mail in and then keep working on you. Not every student here is in perfect health.

Okay, I apologize ahead if this seems offensive or is worded wrong.

LMU is my top choice so far for D.O. schools. I have been fortunate to get an Interview Jan. 12, 2010.

What is going on with the provisional accreditation at LMU?

Also have people heard of any news from the first graduating class about residency programs they matched into?

Are they having troubles getting into programs because of the provisional accreditation?

Are programs seeing this status as not so good yet and are graduates having troubles getting into the specialties they want to enter into?

Basically what I am trying to get at is if I get accepted and graduate in four years in May 2014 and the school grants my degreea while still under "Provisional Accreditation" will affect me in anyway from wanting ti become an ENT/Plastic Surgeon, Neurosurgeon, or a Gastroenterologist. I basically don't want to screw my self over in the long term or will LMU be accredited by then?

Another reason I ask is because it has been four years since the first class entered and many older schools received full accreditation within one year upon opening their doors from COCA.
