LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Long time lurker....first time poster. But wanted to mention how informational you guys are. Thanks...

Very excited about this school.

Anyone interviewing on Oct 19th??? 🙂eek🙂 Going to the Pizza thing??

It will be nice to be nervous together...lol.

Got an interview invite. Nov. 1. This is my top choice as of now and I'm so glad to get the call!

Hey guys,

some of you asked about the student housing. I'm a first year, I'm living in the student housing right now.
They have 3 buildings for Med, PA, Post Bach. students and faculty. The Mars and Lee apartments have 1 living room, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 1 kitchen (all furnished) and they allow pets. I'm living at the University Inn, they have furnished studios and 1 bed room, NO pets.
I have a studio, it's very cozy and nice for 1 person ($550/month), if you have a sig. other, you prob want the 1 bedroom. kitchen is veryyy small, 2 flat stoves that don't heat very well, the fridge is good size. Their furniture is really new and good so if you are from farrrr away like me, you'll like it. oh n they have cute gym on the first floor of the University Inn, an outdoor pool, basket ball court, n volley ball court, too. (they have a golf course, several tennis courts in school)

The first test wasn't bad, mostly everyone did great! Right now we are studying for our 2nd test series. Coming up we have 2 written tests, 1 lab practical, OPP lab and Essential Patient care lab test. Crazyy, I know, but you'll get used to it. If you fail your first test, you'll be assigned to 2nd year students and they'll tutor you for the next tests.

This school has a mentor program where they match a 2nd year with us, just in case we need something there'll be someone there for you, eat, talk, hang out or to ask questions about labs, n materials.

Advice: they don't focus completely on numbers, mine wasn't ecstatic but if you show them that you can do great in Med school, be a good leader in the Medical community, have passion, and know what you are heading toward, you'll do awesome on your interview.

I hope this helps a lil bit.

I just submitted my AACOMAS today (late, I know) but I'm a bit confused about sending the secondary via mail too soon. Shouldn't I wait for my primary to be verified before I send in the secondary?
No reason to wait. You are getting mixed stories form people, but I sent mine in before I was verified and I got in. You might just drop an email to Janette letting her know of your excitement for the school and ask if it's ok to go ahead and send it, if that will reassure you...good luck!

Could anyone comment on life in Harrogate, Tenn.? Current students, people who've been there, lived there, etc.

Is it a singles town, married town, good mix?

I understand it's rural, dry county, small school, not very diverse. What's it like to live there though?

There's going to be some serious convincing needed for my wife + daughter on any big moves. We're OK with Erie (where I have an acceptance) but these rural towns may be deal-breakers.

Thanks!
My honest advice is this: if you aren't sure your loved ones will be happy here, I wouldn't come here. It's not super easy when you're used to and prefer a bigger city. I would say as a whole this is a town with a good mix of young people (because of the undergrads and med school) and families. Not many singles in my opinion. It is DEFINITELY rural, but the county is actually "moist" from what I have gathered. You can get beer at one of the restaurants in town and there is a wine and beer shop 5 min. away in VA. Diversity is actually not quite as bad as I imagined, but that is mainly because of DCOM. As far as things to do, this place MIGHT work for you guys if you enjoy beauty and the outdoors. It is seriously so amazing here. Hiking, running, etc are regular favorites for students and locals. I left this past couple of days to go home and couldn't wait to get away from the flat lands of the Midwest and back to the mountains. At least check it out here- it's gorgeous. And there are basic things to do- small movie theater, I think (not positive though) there might be a skating place in KY nearby, and there are a couple coffeeshops. Most decent shopping is 40min-an hour away though.

Yay! Interview November 2nd.
CONGRATS!! See! I told you you just needed to be patient, didn't I?? Now try to calm your nerves and prep the best you can for this interview since you awaited the invite so eagerly!

So what is everyone doing for their travel plans and hotel stay?

So what is everyone doing for their travel plans and hotel stay?
To you and everyone else wondering the same thing-
As far as hotel stay goes, if you are coming alone, listen up!

I am in the process of working with the SGA pres to start a student host program so that interviewees can stay with current students the night before their interview if they prefer. It shouldn't take long to get the go ahead once we get things rolling on this, but until then, just let me know if you're interested in that and I will see what I can get worked out. Ultimately the goal will be to have something in the interview packet about the whole thing.

If you're wanting to stay in a hotel, people always recommend the Holiday Inn in Middlesboro. In my opinion, if you want a more unique experience, stay at the Cumberland Gap Inn. The Gap is so neat. I cannot vouch for the quality of the Inn but I am sure it's nothing to worry about because it is a very touristy little (and boy do I mean little) town. That's my two cents though 🙂

this is my by far my #1 choice! they just cashed my check the day after they recieved my DO lor(which was late) I'm hoping I hear back soon but have not recieved a complete email yet though?🙁 im starting to get a little worried, although. Maybe there not looking at my file because I have an mcat score pending? i have an mcat score already but retook because I didnt think it was good enough. I think once my new score comes in im gonna update them with a letter of what I have been doing since submitting my primary.

Student host programs are always fun! You go Grace. I hear it's a 1.5 hour drive from the airport to the town, that is one expensive taxi ride. Maybe we should carpool, some company, and some saved cash for us broke med school applicants!

Speaking from experience, it is MUCH cheaper to rent a car than ride a taxi. You can rent a car for like 4 days for the same price as the cab ride one way. I wouldn't recommend anyone paying for the taxi.

Maybe not that dramatic. If you are only staying one day though, it is cheaper to rent.

Congrats to everyone who has been offered an interview so far!

Here is the deal.....

This place is awesome, the interview is really relaxed, the people are friendly, and the school is amazing.
I could not have made a better choice than the one I made to come to LMU-DCOM.

Good luck to all who have applied and don't stress out about the interview. It is by far the most non threatening environment I have ever been in when something so important was at stake. I am sure Grace E. will agree with me.

Come the night before if you can and go to the Pizza Hut dinner. It is a time where y'all will get to meet with current students and ask whatever you want to ask about the school, the area, etc.... None of it has any impact on your interview, it is just so you can ask those questions that you don't want to ask the people interviewing you. It is a great way to find out first hand from those currently enrolled what life is like in the Metropolis that is Harrogate and Cumberland Gap TN. and what life is like at DCOM.

Again, good luck to all who have applied and all who are awaiting their interviews. Any questions, let me know.

I will be driving with my friend from Michigan more like a road trip, but just wanted to ask u guys is it okay if I bring him with me to the pizza thing and the interview???

You're a med student, you don't need alot of options for things to do. If it was just you, don't let geography alone determine where you go to school.

Unfortunately your wife will be bored unless she is very outdoorsy. The main options for doing things are trails outside. Your daughter it will depend on her age. If she's young and goes to school then she'll most likely make friends with people and be fine. They will be bored, I guarantee.

Diversity is brought only by the undergraduate and graduate campus. Its >95% caucasian in Harrogate/Middlesboro. Harrogate offers about 4 fun things... No bucks coffee house, The Post (a bar), and the UNC Club (a "club", not really)... oops thats only 3 fun things. The two bars will be busy and filled with smog (i mean smoke) every friday/saturday.

In all honesty, you can consider living in LaFollete, TN. Its a 25 min drive to Knoxville and about 35 min drive to campus. Therefore your wife won't be so bored.

Consider reading this guide about the surrounding area...http://www.dcomdo.com/osteopathic-student-handbook/

why this should be a problem? there will be many ohters at the pizza hut who have nothing to do with the school(normal custoers).

Thanks for clearing this up! I have some questions as I am filling out the secondary application. I have nothing to list for professional experiences besides undergraduate research. I was paid during summers and full time so I was considering if I should include this?

Also, I only have one significant volunteer experience listed for 2 years. I was considering attaching a resume to add more but it would just restate what's on my AACOMAS. I put a lot of time and thought into the AACOMAS so I feel attaching a resume would be redundant.

Does anybody know if they accept additional letters of recommendation. I have two additional but don't know if they just want the DO letter and committee letter.

Thanks!

So is anyone else interviewing on the 2nd of November?

I just got an interview November 2nd. Pretty excited about this school from what I've seen on their website and from my pre-med advisor. I'm all about the outdoors so this seems like it'll be a very nice fit for me. Any information on how the interview is run at LMU-DCOM?

Interview invite for November 2nd. Sweet!

Just got an interview invite....Nov 8th. Very Excited!! My first one 🙂

It's definitely ok. Parents, friends, SOs are always welcome. It's informal and has no bearing on your application; just an opportunity to meet some students and ask questions you may not feel comfortable asking an interviewer.

So for those of you who got November interviews, when were you complete?

I am so stoked for this interview! LMU is at the top of my list! I think I am the only one on SDN that has an interview on Nov 1st though. So wonwee, oh so wonwee.

I also am interviewing in October and was complete in July. Do you think admissions accepts a greater percentage of applicants, than normal, during the first few interviews?

Generally that is how rolling admissions work. The first people they interview have a shot at every seat available. As the seats fill up they get more and more competitive.
At least that is my understanding.

I am interviewing on October 19th.

I drove out to DCOM yesterday to take a tour and get my bearings for the area.
The facility is very nice and new. The staff and faculty seem very welcoming+ genuinely excited about the program. The area is well extremely extremely rural.

I found out the stats for the class of 2014. Average MCAT: 24.4, 3.32 science gpa, 3.43 cumulative, 3.53 non-science. They interview 400-500 and accept around 262 for a class of around 162. My basic math skills tell me that if you interview you will have a 50% or greater chance of gaining an acceptance. I will gladly take those odds.
I'm honestly surprised our numbers aren't a little higher. My class rocks! Our very first lab practical had an average over 80%, I want to say like 85% even. It was crazy! Our prof was VERY happy with this, and he has had somewhere around thirty years experience doing med school anatomy!

Student host programs are always fun! You go Grace. I hear it's a 1.5 hour drive from the airport to the town, that is one expensive taxi ride. Maybe we should carpool, some company, and some saved cash for us broke med school applicants!
Definitely don't do a taxi. Most people rent cars. If you can network through the website, you might be able to get one rental car to split the cost, but I don't know...it might get hard to time flight arrivals and all that. Good luck with that!

Congrats to everyone who has been offered an interview so far!

A fellow classmate appears! But who is it...?? 🙂

Absolutely...it's great to have some support!

I honestly don't even remember what I put for professional experience- is there already a clinical experiences section? If not, maybe job shadowing could go there? If you don't have any, though, don't sweat it. I'm not sure that paid research counts, but I guess it might. Honestly, I really don't think it's worth stressing over- just don't do obviously wrong things like listing paid stuff under volunteer work or try to call things volunteer work that really aren't.

I wouldn't bother attaching a resume that restates stuff on AACOMAS. They evaluate all of it when they review your app. If, however, you can't fit everything on the secondary app that you want (and you didn't already cover it in the primary), just put "see attached resume" on your secondary and enclose it with your app.

I think they'll accept an extra letter, probably just one. I would email Janette to ask first though and explain why you wish to include it. You'll want to have a decent reason for it, so that it doesn't come across negatively (aka you being really insecure about your app or you wanting to really show off, etc)

I got an interview invite today!!!

Just got an interview invite....Nov 8th. Very Excited!! My first one 🙂

Hey everyone,

Got a call today, interview is Nov 9.

CONGRATS on all the new interview invites!

I also am interviewing in October and was complete in July. Do you think admissions accepts a greater percentage of applicants, than normal, during the first few interviews?
Absolutely. This is why there is an advantage to applying early. The same student applying in August can get in easily but get waitlisted or rejected in March (speaking from personal experience here). On the same token, though, it's not a guaranteed acceptance by ANY stretch. Just increased odds in my opinion.

Hey guys..... A few of us met with the dean yesterday. Last year dcom interviewed over 500 applicants for 162 spots.thought you might want to know good luck!

If I am not mistaken, there is a pizza event for every group of interviewees, that is two interviews a week, with 8 interviews a month. Multiply that by 8ish months and your have 64 pizza dates. So, how do the current students attend these events. Is there a sign up with the school, is it done through the student body? I'm curious.

I'll jump on this one...

They rotate through different students basically. One of the organizations on campus (SOMA I believe) gives us the opportunity to sign up for different nights and it ends up being a mixture of first and second years. Sometimes it will get skewed a little because one class or the other has an exam the next day or something. Any reason you ask?

Thanks for the answer! A few reasons, I am wondering how it happens for when I get in (lol), if certain students pick certain nights, and just kinda curious if I get to meet any SDNers!

I showed up for pizza one night when some others reminded me about it (regardless of signing up), but I hope to attend more this year.

Thanks Grace. No specific reason to ask. I was just curios as how the student managem so many pizza nights.

i guess im kind of out of the running at this school. i called them and asked about the status of my application and my file is not considered complete because they are not considering my pre medical advisors letter as a hard science lor(even though she is an advisorand one of the heads of the bio program at my school). i have a bio professor, music professor math professor and a pre med advisor letter as well as a letter from an MD and a DO. They said I need another hard science letter. I have emailed my biochem and inorganic chem professors from last year so they can hopefully write me one quickly but i don't think that i will get it in time( this was last week and still havent recieved an email back from them). i'm not giving up but i know this hurts my chances at lmu which is disapointing cause i like the school a lot. maybe its because they didn't like my app who knows. ill keep trying though

Good idea peachy! I think tommorowill give them a ringaling

So, LMU-DCOM wants a letter from two different science profs?? As in, two subject areas of study??!!! Oh yikes. I graduated from college five years ago, and the only profs that are still around teaching any of the sciences (that I had) are all from the same department. Is this going to be a problem?! I hope not. Any advice?
