i heard that loma linda requires its former med students to donate to the school every year based on a contract that was signed prior to enrolling? is this true? it sounds too sketchy.

Lomda Linda sure does get more than its fair share of related superstitions. I'm not sure we actually have anyone on this board who attends there. I know I've had many questions remain unanswered regarding it.

so, the rumor is true? I.e. if u make like 100k a year, u have to give them 10k each year. over 30 year carrer, it's 300k?

Like I said...no one here goes there or knows anyone who goes there.

I am also fairly sure that this is an urban legend among applicants who did not get accepted there 🙂

c'mon guys, i was just joking! Loma linda is the biggest puzzle among all schools, but they are WAY too pre-occupied with THEIR religion, as opposed to other religios schools--I mean like creighton, georgetown, so on.

"They" are not too pre-occupied with "their" religion. They are pre-occupied with caring for people- I thought we all were. They are very similar to other private schools with the exception being that "they" do go to services on Wednesday mornings. My opinion is that we, being future doctors, should stop spreading rumors and having ill feelings towards a school/religion that most know little about! But thats just my opinion.

"Wednesdays?" Isn't the "seventh-day" Saturday?

The "Falconer":
no reason to be nasty. but loma linda deserves the reputation for being so mysterious about their admissions. I also think their mission statement should include "Our Jesus is better than your Jesus". None of the other religios schools like creighton, say, well we only take Catholics preferntially and then maybe be a couple of those who will buff up our stats.

Wasn't meant to be nasty lady in red..just informative and opinionated. I think LLU SOM makes students go to services on Wednesday to ensure that services are attended and to "guide" students as they learn. The Seventh Day does denote Saturday which is when most SDAs attend church. I think if you dive deeper into various religions you will find that SDA is no different than many in the aspect of preferential treatment and leaning towards specific ideas.

Falconer, you think the Jesuit schools give the same level of preference to Catholics that Loma Linda does to SDAs? I'm not sure what you're saying...

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. I think its probable that Catholic schools do give preferential treatment and they just don't advertise it as much as Loma Linda does. I think we all have to realize that there is a certain amount of preferential treatment in the admissions process anyways. URMs often get preference over many others and joe blow whose daddy gave 2 million to the school has a better chance too, as do residents when they apply to a state school. Many things in the admission process of any school may seem unfair if it doesnt benefit the applicant who is upset. Preferential treatment of any kind can seem unfair. LLU SOM does, however, except other faiths besides SDA-just as a sidenote.

LLU is financially supported by the church; therefore, they are expected to accept a certain number of SDA applicants.

At least the school is up front and honest about what they use as their preferences. It is not a hidden agenda and if you do not really agree with what they stand for then you do not have to apply.

If you disagree, you are perfectly welcome to say so, but there are logical reasons for the way they do things just as their are reasons for others to not like the way they do things.

I'd actually like them to be a bit more open, like say...how many spots do they reserve each year for non-SDAs? What's the average MCAT and GPA of a non-SDA? I personally think that if you are going to be as biased as they openly are towards a single factor, you should post both levels of stats, sort of like for out-of-state people applying to a public. Of course it's a private institution and they can do whatever they want, it's still my opinion.

-but that's not how it works; the whole process is f'ed up!

This is no rumor--you need a letter of reference from a pastor to apply to Loma Linda. I don't see Creighton, St. Louis, or Georgetown asking for such references. They openly state in thier pamphlets and website that they give preference specifically to SDA.

Personally, I don't like how Loma Linda, in a sense, excludes others, but nonetheless, they are doing for a good cause and thus I admire that.

As much as I strongly agree that the Jesuit institutions are not nearly (if at all) as biased towards Catholics as Loma Linda is towards SDAs, the Loma Linda secondary does NOT require a letter from a pastor. I just filled it out. They do, however, specifically allow it. Further, do people even know that NYMC is a Catholic college? The Catholic schools play it really low-key.

Man, we have beat loma linda to death. maybe we should let this post go? its only one school out of what 125 in the country? let'em take SDAs, who cares. you can always go there for residency

FUNNY! Was that an intentional "slip". They sure do EXCEPT other faiths! 😀

None is correct, they do not require a reference from clergy. They do say that if you attend a church, would you please put down a name and phone number of that clergy. I suppose they might call and talk to them at some point in the process.

I have a friend who attended LLU, and is not a SDA. He is now in his 2nd year of residency. He said that while a majority of the students were SDA, there were quite a few who weren't and even a couple who were believers in faiths seemingly quite opposed to the SDA faith.

I think that lady-in-red is right, there are 124 other schools from which to apply. If this one does not cut the mustard, another surely will. That is what is good about having each school determine it's admission criteria. Some want researchers, some want older students, some want young folks and others want primary care while others would like to groom the next pediatric nephrologist who only specializes in the left kidney. This means that there is a spot for almost every type of aspiring doctor - that is good news for all of us 🙂

Hahahahaha. Very funny. But, if that left-side-pediatric-nephrologist medical school was the only one willing to take me, I'd probably go. I'd also worship the devil and sacrafise pigs on Tuesday nights, if the Lucifer School of Medicine were the only one willing to take me too. Of course, they would also need to promise patient contact in the first two years accompanied by some problem-based learning sessions. They would also have to tell me that they have very happy non-competitive students.

TwoStevesquared: Ha Ha Ha, did you pull this stuff out of your secondaries? 😀 😀
