There’s a couple others already started! Search “2024” using “this forum” in the drop down menu in the search bar and select “search titles” and you should find them. And ones you’re applying to that haven’t been started, definitely start them yourself!! Someone’s got to!

So I wanted to share a thing. MSU said they like to see a narrative style of experience. What did it teach you, how did it help you grow, etc. Other schools like VmRcvm want bullet points etc. I think wisconsin also liked a narrative approach. I feel like putting down ehat you did as bullets ( job desc) and if you have extra space ( which I did) put down what impact the experience had.

For example I've been out of work not by choice after graduating but I have been working at a vet clinic for the homeless/needy.

I would put:

Job description:
- Assisted in restraint and exanimation
- Took vitals and collected patient info
- dispensed medications

Gathering patient info stengthened my taught me to speak clearly and concisely. Hostile clients taught me to defuse the situation. Working in a face paced emvironment made me flexible as a worker and adaptable. Talking to Distraught clients and helping the elderly with medication helped me to assess each clients needs with a fresh perspective.

Given this would be simplified a little more but I would talk to the schools you wish to apply to and see what they prefer.

Thank you SO much for this information. I didn't even think to put personal growth statements in my experience section last round! Definitely will this time - thanks again!

I'd love to be able to do this since this is what they like to see, but most of my experiences don't have enough characters left to be able to type more than a few words =/

I listed the more important things I did (left off things like “trimmed nails”) and had room for 2 sentences to state something I learned. I didn’t elaborate on what I learned given the character limit but was able to say something like “I saw how acupuncture and Chinese herbs can complement traditional therapies.” The end.

Thank you, I took your advice and removed two of the lesser important items (filling prescriptions and communication over the phone) to add a few sentences about what I've learned at ER. (I also made a point to add what I learned to other experiences as well).

Hey guys! 2nd time applicant, first time to Michigan State (OOS). I was wondering if anyone had some insight into what MSU typically prefers as far as evaluations go. The letters I have narrowed my choice down to and am deciding between are from (1) my graduate advisor/professor, (2) an equine vet I did research under, (3) a small animal vet/practice owner/surgeon, (4) or a second small animal vet I work for currently and have known for the last decade. I know that all of these evaluations are great and very personal, and I guess what I'm wondering is if they tend to prefer evaluations from vets (so 2, 3, and 4) or diversity of evaluator background (1, 2, and either 3 or 4). Thanks in advance for any advice!

Michigan State (at least last year) likes to have your eLORs reflect your biggest/most important experiences (keep in mind what makes you unique - for me shadowing equine repro specialist). Last year only 1 needed to be a veterinarian, and they did not require any to be from a school related source.

(Ex: my biggest exp were - Horse Stable (eLOR from coworker, Equine Repro Specialist (vet eLOR), GP Small Animal Hospital (vet eLOR))

I got additional eLORs for other school apps but designated these for MSU.

Hey guys! This is my first year applying, good luck to everyone!! Anyone applying a second time around been told what they should have improved on for last year's application?

It’s my first time applying here, BUT i did allly last year and got a review from other schools. They all basically told me that the application pool was really large last year. Nothing to really improve on.

Has anyone received an email from MSU about having a complete application? I haven’t received anything from them but everything in my VMCAS says verified.

Does anyone know how Michigan State communicates with us? Is there a portal or will they email us, if there is a portal what is the address?

Last year it was via email. We received a complete application email and then an email about them sending out invites to in state applicants.

Haven’t received anything yet however.

Been awhile since I was applying but I think they still communicate via email.
We got letters mailed to us when I was applying. It was a much simpler time back then.

Last year I received a confirmation of complete application in mid September, and didn't hear anything else till interview invites (IS) first week of November.
All correspondence was by email only.

Hi all,

I'm curious, how does MSU weigh GPA into admissions decisions? I've heard that once it's above a certain threshold, it's no longer a factor. I do have some very high quality work experience, albeit with not very many hours, so I was kinda hoping my grades would be able to tilt things in my favor LOL

Pretty sure once you are above 3.0, that's cleared and they look at the rest of your application

Yeah they said after interviews they look at your file (experiences, letters, essays) and your interview scores and that's it as far as I know.
I remember in my file review (after not getting invited to interview) I had asked if it was worth retaking another course for a higher grade over getting more experience and they said no. I made the cut off for grades so at that point it's much more important to have unique and supportive experiences.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Guess I'll have to hope that the quality of my experience will count for something at least haha

Anyone heard from MSU yet?? Haven’t heard anything since submitting still. Last year I got something within a week

Nope nothing yet. We probably won’t hear back until they send out interview invites.

Last year I got an email a few days after I submitted basically saying thanks for your app but I didn’t get one this time. I emailed them anyway just to confirm everything has been received

I haven't heard anything, I'm just trying not to think about it and assuming my first correspondence with them won't be until interview invites are sent out in ~5 weeks.

Just received an email from them. Sounds like they won’t be emailing us until November unless they are missing something from our application. Good luck to us all!

It looks like the earliest interview date this year is December 13th, which is ~2.5 weeks later in comparison to last year (November 30th).
