Mizzou c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Omg omg omg omg!!!!! I got an invite!!!!!! 😀 😀 😀

Just popping in from "the void" that I seem to have disappeared into since school started -

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has gotten interview invites so far!!! 😀 Columbia, MO is pretty darn cool, and the vet school is GREAT! 🙂 School gets (extremely) stressful at times, but that is at ANY vet school. (if you think this is going to be easy, get out now!)

I wish you all lots of luck! 🙂 :luck: :xf:

My very first interview invite! YAY! I am capslock all over the place. 😀 😀 😀

First interview invite! YAYAYAY!!! Congrats to everyone who got an interview so far! :highfive: Hope to meet some of you there!

Yaay nordicat! Thank you for stopping by!! Hopefully over Christmas break you can fill us in on your first semester!! 😀

Congrats guys!! I'm going to try and work more of the OOS interviews this year so hopefully I'll see you around!

Also just got my interview invite (OOS)....first interview invite I've received!!! Exciting!!! 🙂

Just got my interview invite!! It was such a surprise, I was bracing myself for a rejection. Congrats to everyone else!

No it came a little before 5 pm I think. I had just checked my email 🙂 and thank you!!

No invite here. Bummer 🙁

Is there a way to check to make sure it's official?

I'm thinking no news is bad news... the past two years all the invites were sent via email on the same day and rejections via snail mail about a month later. Good Luck to all those who got invites and just thought I'd share my observation :/

This makes me sad. 🙁 👎. I hope it's not true and that more will be sent out.. If not, I wish you all the best of :luck: :luck: for other schools!! :xf: :xf:

Where can I find feedback and questions from the Mizzou interview? Thanks!

BUMP...... More than halfway down page 2... BOOOO 😉

Interviews are a month away friends!!! What's everyone doing to prep? Have you found your interview attire?

And Good :luck: on finals!! We are almost there! 😀

I'm so excited for the interview! Well, excited and nervous. I just bought pants and a jacket today for the interview. I'm still looking for a cute shirt, but that should be easier to find. I don't really know what to do to prepare...I'm probably just going to read over the questions on here and read over my application to brush up on what I wrote. Maybe I'll brainstorm questions they might ask me off of my application. Any good advice on that?

Last year they didn't ask me too much about my application. A few "how will this experience help you as a vet" questions. And "I see you're interest in... tell me about it" type questions. Mostly though it was really conversational. We talked about a lot of current events/hot topics in my area of interest (equine).

I'm in state, so I am guaranteed an interview. I have my pants suit from last year... but I am afraid I need to work out for the next month to fit in it! and 18 hour credit load semester + lab job has left me a little softer in the middle than usual it seems!

I think that all sounds like a good idea! ! I'm gonna try and do some mock interviews with the Drs I work for... My Repro professor has also offered to do mock interviews... Time is just flying by!

My mizzou interview was off the wall. We talked about climate change for a good chunk of it. Be prepared for anything!

Hmm current events? So you talked mainly about current events specific to equine medicine? I'm going to start reading the paper (I really don't keep up with the news...its bad, I know) in case they ask me a general current event question. Are there any journals/websites you would recommend for vet med?

And yeah I need to lose five pounds before the interview. No holiday binge eating for me!

dvm360 is a site I've found that has some good articles on all sorts of vet med stuff - research, clinic environment/management, politics and law, etc.

from what I remember from my interview (granted, it was in high school) - yeah, brushing up on your application/resume is important, but not the most important. One thing that was more important in mine was my extracurricular activities; the admissions board wants to know that you are well-rounded, as vets need to be more than medicine machines. Diversity is good! Also, go thru your shadowing notes to look at some of the interesting stuff you've seen - they want to see that your shadowing was productive, that you were involved and interested, and that you learned something.

I had a mock interview with the health professions committee at my school last year, and I'm going to meet with the pre-vet advisor on Monday to talk about interview prep. I should probably go over my application and stuff too, but I think that will probably wait until after finals. I'll have to look at some current events stuff, too, apparently...

Oh the current events was not in a worrisome, study up way. Sorry, don't worry!

I have been extensively involved in the equine industry (4-H, Pony Club, managed a tack shop, competed excessively, on the board of directors for a breed organization, worked in an equine surgery facility). We talked about how the economic climate is affecting veterinary decisions horse owners make, horse "rescue" organizations that aren't able to provide proper care for the numbers of horses they have, deworming beliefs and what I knew about new recommendations and how I advocated those in the tack shop, and the use of alternative medicine (chiropractics, acupuncture, massage, etc) in performance horses. I think they were just trying to get a feel of my critical thinking abilities using stuff I should have been exposed to. And maybe to determine how completely I understood the dynamics of the industry I wanted to be involved in.

It wasn't like, what drug is being currently recommended for x or anything like that 😀

I'm wearing a pants suit, but I still need to decide how to do my hair.

To prepare, I'm mainly reading current events from the the newspaper, dvm 360, and I signed up at http://www.smartbrief.com/news/avma for daily emails. I've also been looking at my application and the interview feedback section.

I also had a mock interview the other day through my school's career center, and I'm going back again next week for another session. Apparently I have good body language, but I'm too honest.

I plan on wearing a pant suit.. Just haven't had a chance to shop yet. 🙄 ... But after this weekend I'm officially done with undergrad so I'll have a little more free time to go shop 😀

Too...honest? What?

Too...honest? What?

He was asking me different questions, and said that I might want to rephrase them differently. For example, he was asking me what my favorite class was, and I said calculus because I used to be a bit of a math geek, and he asked me what my least favorite class was and I said physiology because it was really difficult for me. So, he said that I may not want to say that about one of my biology classes. Then, when he was asking me why I chose my school (a small liberal arts school), I said it was because it was small and I didn't want to be in a classroom with a hundred students (like in vet school 🙄), and it would be better if I talked about something like the scholarships they gave me or the fact that we have a brand new science building.

Is the Mizzou interview still just 15 minutes??

Trust me, they want to get a feel for "you" and not how much news stuff you can regurge in 15 min. The majority of it will (most likely) be discussing something you already know- YOU! I was asked why I wanted a DVM and not a phD, why not just be a tech, what sort of different things can vets do other than private practice...why I thought I could handle the rigorous curriculum given that I'd been out of school a few years, etc. Everyone here's super-nice; it will probably be your favorite interview if you have more than one 🙂

Yep only 15 minutes... They even said to keep our questions brief lol

That being said, make sure a 2+2 program is really what you want and are able to handle. We go until the end of June first year (6 weeks of summer break), and (while I'm not sure how fast things go at other schools) we go VERY fast. Our class had Physiology 4 of 5 days per week. The first two "blocks" are more like a semester together, but after winter break...it's mostly 8-week blocks until you start Clinics (3rd year, after one 8-week block).

We often go 8-4 or 9-5 first year. Time management skills are A MUST, and if you even suspect you may have a learning disability, psychiatric condition (ex: test anxiety or depression), or anything else medical going on (root canals, sleep disorders, ADHD, etc!) get that stuff figured out NOW. There's not much free time to start seeing doctors or anything once you get going.

This is all from the perspective of someone slightly older than the average student, though. I have a lot of other "life stuff" going on (husband & whatnot, permanent medical issues, yadda yadda). If you're looking for info from someone more in the "typical" age group, Krist could provide you with probably a more balanced picture than I. EquineRider26 would also be a good person to ask for another point of view! I think she is one of our "youngins" 🙂

nordicat = old bat 😉

Thank you for all the info Nordi, your the best 😀

May I be your "big sib" next year and not your classmate, KP 😛

Just wanted to drop by and say I'll be at all of the OOS interview days at some point as an ambassador. Hope to meet some of you there!

Yaay! I'll be there the 6th!! Can't wait to meet some SDNers!!

Same! I'll see you there, kp! 👍

Yaaay!! So exciting!!

And just throwing this out there, if any of y'all wanna be FB friends let me know, that way you can put a name to the face on interview day!!!

So pumped!!

Anyone have an idea on the % of applicants that get interviews that get acceptance offers? I heard they may have decided to interview more this year so the % may go down, any ideas?

They are definitely interviewing more (almost double, I think) and are not opening any more OOS seats than last year, so the percentage of people who will be accepted out of those who are interviewed will be lower.

Congratulations and good luck to everyone on interviews! I wish you all the best! :luck:

I received my rejection letter yesterday, so I'm out.

Edit: It was actually an e-mail, not a letter.

Hey all!

I just signed up for 5 or 6 hours of ambassador "work" on each day. I'm SO SO SO excited to meet all of you (just ask my labmates 😳 ).

Yaaaay!! Very excited to meet you!!!

Where are all the Mizzou applicants at?? I feel like I'm the only one that stalks this thread :meanie:

Don't worry, I'm stalking just as constantly. I'm just generally quieter about it. 😀

I stalk this thread, too. But I'll be there on the 4th and it looks like most people on SDN are going to be there on the 6th 🙁
