MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Definitely not saying who's more deserving of what. Not even talking about the individual candidates.
My whole point has been that people should not be limited chances for a good education bc of their previous baggage (that dipped their GPA), and public health people should realize that school grades definitely present oppression in many ways. It's the same stream of thought when they waived GRE or any other standardized tests. They should do it more comprehensively by taking in the whole application for merit-based awards.
I mean, it's not that I can change the system at this minute. lol. Just seeing many of us who are in need and highly achieving in life are not awarded scholarships bc of GPA makes me feel weird.
I actually really loved your post and agree with everything you said! This is more about when people are referencing their aid or their accomplishments in undergrad and how they expected it to translate over to graduate admissions (example: folks complaining about 30k+ scholarships when some people are getting less or none). I think that maybe some of us aren't considering the diversity of backgrounds that is amplified by graduate admissions -- we have folks coming straight out of undergrad and we have folks who have been in various careers for years and the determination of need and scholarship is really tough for schools who aren't doing the GPA cutoffs. As someone who is leaning super heavily towards Columbia, I hard agree with your post because I had some barriers to having a great GPA in college but feel like what I've done since deserves a lot more consideration! Post was not pointed towards you at all 🙂

Sorry about that! I am sure mine will be a rejection as well. Did you look on the portal or was it an email? Agreed I just want to hear back!
🙂 Hey, do not worry! It's hard to say what the committee was looking for in their candidates this year. A lot of universities received an overwhelming number of applications and it could also be that they filled up the class with the applications they initially reviewed. While applicants decide whether to confirm their admission or decline it, spaces will become available soon. Stay positive!

I received an email from them with the decision. 🙂

I also got 50% and was wondering the same thing
I think it depends on what you want to do and what connections you need to get there. If you’re interested in an area of public health that isn’t compensated well, it may not be a financially sound decision to take out so much in loans. But it’s ultimately a personal decision.
I only got 25% from HSPH but I’m likely going to take the offer since I’m in medicine and will be able to pay the loans back with a (part time) doctor’s salary. But I’m really not crazy about the COL in Boston haha.

^ same here! I applied the last week of November and got my acceptance to the MPH in Infectious disease and vaccinology program on the night of Jan. 22. I’ve seen other UC Berkeley decisions since then and many have also been late at night. Like 10pm ish
ah ok thank you! then i might be getting rejected I feel LOL but thanks for the insight!!!

Hey all, regarding the financial aid and merit packages: I feel like this forum should definitely be a place to get our feelings out about the stress we are all going through collectively, but I think taking into account that likely the majority of us don't have 80k in savings (or even close, or maybe any savings at all) kind of explains why we aren't all getting half our tuition covered. Though I'm probably going to be 60-100k in debt depending on the program I choose, I feel grateful for the scholarships I have been awarded. Someone posted yesterday who put it really well (and I'm not directly quoting, but here's the general sentiment): it would be lovely if we were all gracious and grateful and respectful towards others and not assume that we are more deserving of scholarship or aid than anyone else in this forum. I can tell just from reading your posts over the last several months that most of us are accomplished and driven people who are all worthy of great opportunities. But when we aren't getting full aid or scholarship, we should think about all of our awesome classmates-to-be who also deserve the financial support, who the money we all want is being distributed between. That being said, I wish everyone the best of luck with their financial packages! Graduate school is definitely an entirely different bag than undergrad, and it will likely be one of the biggest financial challenges many of us have experienced with our education! We're all in this together.

Definitely not saying who's more deserving of what. Not even talking about the individual candidates.

@OnePotatoTwoBobs : I think that @PriFromThePNW is expanding upon the bigger picture in regards to how some posts are constructed. Someone yesterday mentioned that their scholarship is a "joke". I hope I am not the only one feeling this way, but when I see posts that seem a bit bitter (dare I say...borderline ungrateful sounding), it creates overall awkward tension. It almost makes me not want to post about any aid that I receive because I do not want to spark ill feelings amongst others. We have had amazing support on this thread so far and I would hate for that to go away because people start comparing their scholarship/aid to others. The whole purpose of this thread is to be in the loop about what is going on with admission processes. Managing our own emotions can sometimes be hard when we think we are deserving of more, but we have to be graceful in how we translate those emotions into posts. I agree, everyone deserves full rides and amazing financial support through their graduate degree! But we have to keep in mind that humble support that we should have of each other as we navigate this stressful process 🙏🙏🙏

I just checked my Dartmouth portal and it has a letter to reply to my offer of admissions (which I have not received yet). So I guess I am just waiting on their email!
That’s great! I checked about an hour ago and mine does not say anything, so now I’m a bit nervous. Can you let me know when you get the email decision?

its a joke because on their website Yale specifically says that they are affordable my guy. 80k isnt affordable

I think under some circumstances the GRE helped disadvantaged students with lower GPAs as you can study hard for the GRE and get a decent score that will help you application in terms of offsetting a low gpa, without the GRE they're putting more emphasis on GPA which some think is more reflective of ability to handle graduate school coursework, and so merit scholarships will look at the academic side more at the GPA. Definitely for public health they look at everything though.

I think part of waiving GRE scores is dropping graduate enrollment and a lot of the more technical/selective public health related degrees. and other graduate degrees still require the GRE, though I'd be happy to not to have to take the GRE again due to not quite doing as good the first time as I wanted and apply to those schools that don't require it!

I really love how open and friendly we are about how we feel about things.

I skipped a few pages since I'm kept feeling overwhelmed all day, 😂😂and missed the part where the scholarships was mentioned. Thought my post that I typed on my phone while I was sleepy didn't get my message delivered. Anywayssss, we won't all get full rides, and many of us will have to compromise with loans. But hopefully soon enough we'll be making it all back. It will take a collaboration of public health workers like what we have right now. ❤️

Just curious, but is anyone still waiting on Yale :'D I applied 12/15 and I sent an email a couple of weeks ago about when I'd hear back, and Becca Melnick got back to me really quickly and said they anticipate getting all their decisions out during the first week of March :/

I definitely don't think I'd qualify for any scholarships at this point, but this is my last school so it'd be nice to know :'))
I'm still waiting too! Applied 12/15 like you. Its not even really on my radar anymore but I honestly just want to know :/

Has anyone heard from University of Arizona?
Sooo still nothing from them -_- I’m imagining it’s a rejection at this point for me. I applied for a fellowship through them as well and nothing. Anyone receive an Epi acceptance at U of Arizona?

That’s what I’m thinking to it sucks cause this was my safety school.

Right? I reallly wanted this funded fellowship and was envisioning myself here. I emailed them on the 1st and they stated my application was currently under review.

Thanks to you and @PriFromThePNW for your posts, you both are awesome! For the majority who weren't offered full rides and generous scholarships, grad school is going to be expensive. I myself am coming to terms with the amount of loans I'll have to take out!

I also want to encourage people to take a step back to remember the distance traveled, where some of us are lucky to have options. Can you believe just a few months back, we were worrying about crafting perfect SOPs and filling out SOPHAS?! The other day, I was lamenting to my significant other about the lack of financial aid from various schools (guilty as charged!) and he burst out laughing because back in December, I was a hot mess crossing all my fingers and toes for just one acceptance. It reminded me to be thankful and remain humble. For some, it might feel like a slap in the face to only be offered a $10k scholarship from School X, but please do remember that there are others who were rejected, or would do anything to hear back from that school already, or are still waiting for their first acceptance!

This isn't to say you shouldn't post about aid or acceptances-- this group is full of amazing and well-deserving people and although I haven't met any of you personally, I have truly enjoyed celebrating these moments with you all! Just asking for some consideration to everyone's unique situations as we continue to support each other. 🙂

Soooo is anyone still waiting on results from Berkeley and UCLA for Epi? I know a handful of people were accepted a few weeks ago, so I'm starting feel a rejection if I don't hear back by mid-March, which is when they stated that most people will find out by 🙁

Have you emailed Berkeley? its pretty much the only school I have left to hear back.

I got my offer and scholarship. I would hold out hope. I'm a hybrid applicant if that helps (if it doesn't, ignore reading that part).

This is a great reminder! Beautifully worded and crafted response :biglove:

Still waiting on UCLA epi

So TAMU sent me an email saying the review committee has additional questions and what’s to meet with me? Has that happened to anyone yet? I’m lowkey nervous

Has anyone here decided to commit to Brown at all? If so, I'd love to connect. Really considering the program. It is between Brown and my local school, which is a great program as well. Tuition is a huge factor in my indecisiveness,
Same situation as you. Local school isn't bad at all. Brown is expensive but great.... dm me if you want!

Got into umich today!! When I tell you I was shaking man 😅😅
Edit for words of encouragement: I applied on February 5th I believe is when I went under review and I felt like it was a long shot, I have mediocre experience and a mediocre GPA and I didn’t take the GRE. I applied knowing it could be a reach for me. So if you’re like me and late to apply or nervous your stats aren’t the best, don’t count yourself out before you even give yourself a chance. Much love to everyone still waiting and congrats to everyone who was accepted already, good luck with decisions guys!

Congratulations!! Can I ask what department??

Waitlisted at UC Davis! Really hoping for good waitlist movement as it's one of my top choices. Not the most ideal outcome, but not the worst either!
Two Ivy's aint bad though!

You did really well this cycle!

We are on page 146, yet it is only March 5. We can definitely reach 200 pages by April 15. 😅

Happy posting, everyone.
I'm just laughing at how future cycle's MPH applicants are gonna refer back to this year's thread and scroll through like 200 pages to see when exactly their school's decisions come out 🤣🤣🤣I mean hey at least we're positive, helpful, and sometimes fairly entertaining? A search function within the thread wouldn't be a bad thing to incorporate, SDN!

Edit: I have now learned that there is a search function within threads, thanks Sunshine!

Lollll y'all need to BREATHE and Calm Downnn

For all you youngins (99% bet you are) FLEXING-- and you 100% know you're flexing 😉 the world does not revolve around you!! I know the frontal cortex isn't fully developed until at least 25 years old, so you get a slight free pass but life ain't about numbers! GPA, GRE scores, $$ aid, etc. are just numbers. When you're 75 and sitting on a rickety porch drinking adult Koolaid, no one is gonna go "Wow grandpappy you only got a 75% on your GRE with a $30k scholarship!? LAME!"

And for all the other folks who are trying to scold the flexors or other peeps with your holier-than-thou attitude, you are EQUALLY as cringe-worthy (you know who you are). It's nobody's business to scold or tell anyone what to do or how to feel. If someone wants to be flexing, whatever. If someone wants to be sad, their business. If someone wants to be b!tchy, who cares! Not 👏 your 👏 business

If you're a normal human being who wants to find out q/a and be nice to others (aka encourgaging and uplifting), keep doing you. You go you!

Don't even @ me. You'd be revealing that my comments bother you 😂 poor you!!
for reals tho, stay humble and work hard

This is what you get for that long post -

True that 😁 But there are valuable advices for future applicants throughout this thread if they are willing to browse it page by page 🤣

sdn already incorporated the search fxn within a thread.
