MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When the mph admissions office emailed you about the average gpa being 3.3, it is specific for mph programs.

The reported gpa on the website being 3.06 might be all inclusive of all masters' degrees at the school, not just mph.

That is my 2 cents.
No I just checked again. It literally has a break down of the SPH student profile. The fall 2020 class had about 1100 students and the average Masters incoming was 3.06/Ph.D was 3.64. It also lists age, sexes, locations etc

its because the pandemic saw a decrease in attending students

My first post!

Undergraduate degree: Florida State University - BS in Public Health with minor in Public Admin (certificate in Emergency Management)
GPA: 3.34/Major GPA: 3.86

Experience:
- volunteer at local homeless shelter (worked on clerical stuff and laundry) - last 2.5 years
- (not really related) call center representative at school's office of admissions - will be 2 years by Fall 2021
- took various FEMA certification courses and received corresponding certificates
- completed JHU contact tracing certification
- volunteered at gym designed for special-needs children, assisted with class instruction - last few years of HS into second year of undergrad
- member of Public Health Brigades, served on scholarship committee

Letters of Rec:
- Supervisor at admissions office job
- Volunteer supervisor at homeless shelter
- Biostatistics professor whom I took class with and got A in

Important notes - my GPA started very low (2.8 after my first semester), and I went through extensive medical testing and received diagnosis for an auditory processing disorder in sophomore year, so there is a upward curve in my GPA after my accommodations went into effect. I didn't mention this in my personal statement, but added it in the 'add'l info' section if available.

Applied: Boston U (10/11), Tufts (10/25), UMass Amherst (12/4)
Accepted: Tufts (12/21)

Has anyone else who applied on the priority deadline (12/15) to Yale not received an "Application Complete" email? Seems weird that mine hasn't been forwarded for review yet!

I’m starting to FREAK OUT about Columbia, it seems like a lot of people are already accepted to Epi. Do I have a good chance with my stats? Ahhhhhh
Hi! Just wanted to say that your stats look AMAZING!! Don't quote me on this but it seems that most people who heard back def applied by the 12/1 priority deadline for Columbia so that's how they heard back so soon. I sent mine in and it was verified all in the first week of November and I was one of the people who heard back last week. So I would definitely not worry much right now but I know that's easier said than done haha. Most likely, they're still yet to get to your app or hopefully still reviewing it! 🙂 All the best!! 👍

hey guys!! i’m also still waiting on Columbia (epi) and applied by the priority deadline. just wondering, is it a good idea to reach out to the admissions office and check the status? or would they have reached out to me if they had questions?

same applied november and radio silence.
If you email then update us here
EDIT: I just emailed Columbia
-Auto Reply saying 3-5 days for answer
Double Edit: Columbia said my app is still under review and the decision should be this week.

When I emailed them last week for an update( Thursday) and recommendation letter question they said “ application in the final stages of review and a decision will be made shortly”

I say go for it! I feel like it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Also applied priority, also have not heard, but I'm SMS.

I sent an email regarding a piece of my application (transcript update), and I got their response this morning telling me my application was in the final stages of review and I would get a response in a few weeks. Again, very vague and similar to what others have heard when they sent an email regarding their applications.

Do schools still send physical acceptance letters? Haha I understand that physical mail is being cut down these days, but for something important (like admissions) I still relish a paper copy.
I got physical acceptance letters from UNC and Yale about 3 weeks after my acceptance. My Yale acceptance letter came with a sticker and handwritten personalized note at the bottom of it from the director of admissions! Umich also said they were going to send accepted students gifts.

What program did you apply to at UNC?

Based on previous years, I am presuming HSPH bulk decisions would start on 2/18/21. Anyone else heard from them besides the MPH-EPI (online) applicants?

Do we have to apply for merit separately from our application?
I see stuff about uploading docs for financial aid but not just merit based.
Nope! It's in the same application, I received a merit scholarship just from my regular app, hope this helps 🙂

Also applied priority, also have not heard, but I'm SMS.

I also emailed regarding a transcript update and got the same exact response.

I have no idea what final stages of review means, hopefully we hear back this week or next week.

I'm HPM and waiting to hear back but I think maybe this week or next week as well. HPM had a batch of interviews last week and some for this week so I think notifications will start coming out again soon.

also applied SMS and got this same email response when I updated my transcript on the portal. good luck!

Received an interview invite from UPenn one hour ago! Does anyone have advice based on their experience with UPenn's interview process?

I'm just excited that there's one school that's really considering me especially after my first decision was a rejection, lol!

Do y'all know what amount the average MPH student will take out in loans? What is the maximum amount you all are willing to take out in loans, worst case scenario? I'm trying to figure out what is manageable/feasible given the pay for MPH grads if I don't get any more scholarships/financial aid.
Also wondering this!

Thank you!!! That means a lot 🙂 yeah I just wasn’t happy with my personal statement and was waiting on another letter of rec so didn’t end up getting it in until mid jan, wish I did it sooner. But we will see!

lol as long as you do better than me on the UPenn interview then you should be fine.
They ask 3 questions:
-Why Public Health
-What do you want to in Public Health
-Why Upenn

I got into NYU for Epidemiology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG I'm literally shook rn! I thought I wouldn't get into anywhere. On the verge of tears because I have multiple withdraws and Ps on my transcript. I already have 5 rejections and this is my first acceptance. I also had a D+ in Epidemiology and I'm retaking it now.

I am very happy for you 🤗

I emailed Brown asking about decision timeline and they told me they aren't reviewing any until after the admissions deadline and will be sending decisions "by the end of march". I applied to a dual degree, so hopefully it's sooner for those of you in the regular mph track. The wait might kill me 😵

Congratulations!!! Been following your journey on this thread, so all I can say is well-earned and well-deserved! Am also in the same boat with you with grades, so your acceptance brings hope to us in the low GPA group.

Congrats! So happy for you. Hopefully Columbia follows suit!

If you don't mind me asking, when did you apply to NYU? I am in a similar boat and hoping NYU can be my first acceptance.

tbh I like the reputation of NYC when it comes to Public health. I thought I had no chance with Columbia so I chose NYU as my back up.

@Spartacous1

Way to go!!! I did not get any acceptances today for myself but I got equally excited reading your post!

Public health is about goodness before grades, and the schools see that in you 🙂

I'm not sure if anyone else applied to any dual degrees at NYU but I figured I would mention that they told me they wait to send dual degree decisions until both programs have decided. I'm not sure about the other dual degrees, but for the MPA/MPH I had to submit separate applications so I assumed I would be getting separate decisions. Alas, I was mistaken!
I applied to dual MSW/MPH at NYU. I was also told by the school of GPH that I would hear back from them at the same time. But, I applied to the social work program first and was accepted about a week later, called because I wasn't sure if that meant I wasn't accepted into the PH program and they said someone gave me inaccurate info, and that I'll hear from each program separately. For the record, I also had to submit separate applications. Sooo, a bit confusing but just a heads up if this happens to you. Good luck!
