MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When my Asian dad asks me why I picked a lower-ranked Yale over Columbia. Some of you know what I'm talking about!!!

Does anyone know if there’s anyone I can speak with about financial aid and maybe getting more aid/appeal at NYU? I know it’s probably not possible but my dependent status has changed since when I applied so I wonder if that has anything to do with the amount of aid I got. Doesn’t hurt to try, right? 😅

Having trouble deciding between BU (Health policy and law) and GWU (global health policy). I went to BU for my undergrad and know the program pretty well and how good it is, but would love to be somewhere new! Does anyone know about their difference in ranking or how the programs compare?
I'm in the exact same position! BU and GWU were my top choices when I applied but now that I've been accepted into both I don't know what to do!

Just got accepted to Johns Hopkins and awarded a 20k Horstmann at Yale. So much good news all in one night! But now I have absolutely no clue what to do. 😦 As someone who is going into health policy and management and wants to put emphasis on networking and being able to move easily between major cities in my career, I'm drawn to schools that have strong alumni connections throughout the country. I'm a little unsure about that at JHU, I personally haven't met any JHU grads in my industry but have met lots from Columbia and Harvard (the only school I'm still waiting on). Anyone have any thoughts about the JHU network?

If you want to do health policy D.C. is obviously a great place for policy and also home to a lot of those larger health organizations (ex.USAID). I have lived in D.C. my whole life and absolutely love it here. I think for public health in general BU is ranked slightly higher, but not sure enough to make much of a difference. I also think if you want to do global health GWU is generally known for it's global health research more and it might be nice to gain new perspectives by going to a new school. Although I do not know much about BU and I am sure that is a great option as well!

I agree with dae09. If I were doing health policy, I would hands down pick GWU over everything. There is truly no place for policy like DC. Tons of global opportunities here due to the government and international organization presence. Idk the Boston job market that well, but going to school near DC allowed me to do global health/policy related internships while I was in undergrad, and gave me a federal government job post-undergrad. If there's a specific field within health policy that you want to go into, DC most likely has more opportunities in that field than Boston.

Regardless, both programs are great and BU is ranked high for a reason!

Hey everyone! I decided to go to UCLA in Epi and I wanted to reach out to see if there's a group/anyone wants to connect! I got into Columbia but not too hopeful about financial aid. Rejected from Berkeley. Also applied to UCI and I have no idea what's going on there cause they haven't notified me of anything! So I think I've made my final decision so far! I hope all you guys are able to make a decision and get into the school you want! Even though I wasn't here long, was really helpful to hear the opinions of everyone!!
I'm down too!! Please dm me if you'd like!

Hey I'm down to connect! I haven't made my final decision yet, but UCLA is where I'm leaning towards! I'm also considering UW, but the in state tuition for UCLA is sounding a lot nicer. Feel free to DM me!

Likewise here! I'm very much leaning towards UCLA Epi. I'd love to connect!

Woohoo, congratulations!!! Did you apply to JHU's MPH program?

Idk much about the network and not sure if you are MPH or MSPH but for me jhu seems to skew academic opportunities for me

Seems like no one has received any scholarships or FA from Columbia 🙄
In the GroupMe chat, I saw someone say that the FA office said by March 15th for some people.
Columbia FA office responded to me a couple of days ago the following:

"Merit scholarships typically require a cumulative undergrad gpa of 3.75 amongst other criteria that must be met. If you are selected, you will receive notification before April 1."

I can no longer get into Columbia’s financial aid portal. I know it’s here somewhere, but can someone link the site? I’ve been using the SSOL and it’s not working for me now!

Any one committing to UMD? If so is there a Facebook group or something similar?

Just saying its ridiculous I applied to Brown early November and have heard nothing... Off putting to say the least, but at this point I know I dont want to go there anyways. You would think they would want to match when other schools release decisions to be more appealing.

Hey Everyone:
Happy Friday! Long time lurker here- can't imagine going through this cycle without this forum and you awesome people. Love how compassionate and supportive we are as a community.
I'm trying to choose a program and would really appreciate your advice on this. I'm truly grateful to have been accepted into some great programs and now I'm deciding between JHU ( one year full-time MPH), Yale (MPH Health Care Management ) and UC Berkeley (Health Policy and Management). I'm an international student planning to work in health systems/ health-related tech companies/startups after graduation, what do you think is the best place to go?
I'm so torn as JHU is ranked the top for good reasons, Yale has a good international reputation and the MPH program has a close integration with their school of management. and I've been in the Bay Area for several years for school and work so I'm familiar with the kind of opportunities and network Berkeley can provide. Costs are gonna be similar for the 3 schools so that doesn't really factor in. This is tough! Thank you in advance for your insights!!

I applied early November and only heard back yesterday. Super frustrating, but maybe a sliver of hope that you/others will be hearing back in the coming days?

SAME!

Hey there! I've applied to Brown in mid-October and sent them a follow-up email. I was in correspondence with Matt (Director of Student Recruitment), and he was quick to respond and super friendly; and I finally heard back from the school last Monday! I've contacted him using this email: [email protected]

I hope this helps 🙂

Did you get an email notification? I also applied HSPH-65 but haven't heard anything. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing
Yup got an email notification around 9:30am PST. I can't say either way, but if it makes you feel better the tone of the waitlist letter makes it seem like it might be tough in itself to get off the waitlist, but I'm not sure if that's specific to this year

Just got a $15k grant from GW!
Congrats! I am still waiting on my appeal from them! They told me by Sunday night. Did you hear by email? I just called the financial aid office, and they said something about sending emails through a GW email account that I don't have, I think because I haven't put down my deposit. I am nervous I missed an email or something! Did you appeal? Or this is your first award?

I just got an in-depth, personalized email from the head of Brown's maternal child health concentration congratulating me on my acceptance to the concentration. I was accepted to Brown, but I applied to epi...? I do have research interests in reproductive and perinatal epi, but I definitely specified the epi concentration not MCH on my application.

For Yale the email I got was from someone in the Epi department even though I applied Health Policy, and when I asked, they said that there was no error. So it could just be that there is a specific person who sends out the email and it may not be from your dept

That's what I thought at first, but the whole email was about welcoming me to the MCH department and information about the concentration...

does anyone know about financial aid at NYU? would like to see if they consider matching scholarship amounts (fully or a % of) from other schools?

not even looking for a large amount as even a bit would help further sway my decision as I already live in the NYC metro area

easier to contemplate commuting/ moving a bit closer to NYU than picking up and moving out of state (which is $$$) to a school which gave me aid

The NYU scholarship amounts are final unfortunately, that is what I was told when I emailed them last month. I am in a similar boat, and as it stands right now, probably won’t go to NYU at it’s current COA.

Does anyone know if NYU is sending out financial aid packages soon? Hoping I can get some more funding in addition to my scholarship
