MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2012-2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would say it depends on your previous experiences. I have a strong background in anatomy and breezed through the 1st semester. I literally would read the course pack 2 days prior to our exam and do fine. However, I am obviously NOT recommending this approach. These study habits carried over into semester 2 and put me into a big hole to start. Halfway through the semester I have finally caught up. The 2nd semester has been much more challenging for most of us. We reminisce of the "easy" days of anatomy ha. I do basically study now from 8 am-11pm. The best advice I can offer is keep up...every day! And as far as anatomy goes, 70% of your grade will come from lab exams (ie. Identifying muscles, bones, various soft tissue structures, etc.) Basically, kill your lab exams and you won't have so much pressure on you for the lecture based exam portion. Most of our class did very well in anatomy, so don't fret over it. Also, don't worry about the remediation policies right now...focus on succeeding. MSU wouldn't have accepted you if they didn't believe you would succeed. You'll will have tons of support here. Faculty are great, students are great, even the janitorial staff are friendly! Congrats to those already accepted and best of luck to those waiting to hear. My apologies for the single paragraph. My phone isn't very sdn friendly.

Quite honestly, this REALLY helps. Not just the vote of confidence but also knowing that there DOES exit a strategy for success and there ARE resources from which to garner help. Thank you very much. Yay, MSUCOM! See you ....in 9 months!

Here goes another day of anxiously checking my email...

Yea good luck to all you guys. Wednesday's have become my least favorite day....at least until I hear back and get accepted

+1. I really wish MSUCOM would make it my FAVORITE day of the week already 😉 😛

Is there anyway to email admissions and see where they stand with your application or would that just piss them off?

Im truly sick of this process just got waitlisted at azcom for an interview🙁

need good newsss

I don't see why not. Who knows what they will be willing to tell u, but it'll at least show you are interested.

Has anyone been high wait listed yet for this cycle?

Sorry for barging in, but I don't think they put anyone on the high wait list until they run out of spots, or is that what you are trying to determine?

I received an email yesterday but unfortunately it said I was on hold until they received my fall semester grades. I'm afraid there won't be any spots left by then, but hopeful that I'll at least be on the high wait list. We'll see. I haven't had any high level science classes until this semester so they want to see how I do, I guess.

Seems like yesterday was pretty quiet. Also I wonder of they are going to have higher mcat average this year. Just from the ppl who got accepted on here and the few I know seems like the average will be almost 30

I mean, of the 215, most will hear from MD programs since these are the top 20% of all MSUCOM applicants. That's how they accept students, not by timing, just by highest statistics (or the number that they put together for you which includes your stats and EC 'worth'.

There have been students that were accepted to schools like Wayne during the first weeks of COM.

Ok, I did not know that. I thought they gave out the high spots along with the low/regular ones. But that makes more sense. Thanks!

Sorry, is that not good? I thought that was a lot.

Ahhh idk. I mean 100 is still a lot, but that means they've given out enough acceptances to fill 2/3 of their class. But it's true, a lot of those people will not end up attending. I don't know what to think hahaha 😕

don't worry; i suspect that my MCAT of 23 will certainly lower, if not leverage the entering class' stats. 😀

What undergraduate school? I am just trying to understand. I mean, that's awesome that you were able to get in, but I want to know how this works because they talked about how objective they were with admissions

Maybe they have a crazy amount of volunteer hours (that can help out a TON at this school). And idk how much weight is put on being a URM either - that could have helped a little (don't mean that in an offensive way - but it does help).

I guess it depends on what a 'crazy' amount of volunteer hours is, but I have a good amount at around 1500, I can't remember what I put down. I am not discrediting the one who was accepted, I am just wondering what is wrong with my app with all the things that I have to show.

This process is making me neurotic as hell

They'll get to our files, next week. 😀

By crazy i mean CRAZY lol. I know someone accepted with 11,000 volunteer hours. i didn't type that wrong: eleven. thousand. 😱

I had something very close to that number of volunteer hours and I didn't BS at all. In fact I probably underestimated, I volunteered for my school's EMS service and worked close to 40 hours/week all through undergrad (and all unpaid) in addition to several other volunteer activities throughout high school and college. But I was concerned it would look suspicious so I rounded down.

That's awesome, good stuff

I hope nobody BSed since they can call and check with all the advisers of each program you took part in

It's definitely believable and impressive that people like you can have that large amount of volunteer hours. It's pretty safe to assume that not everyone in this application process is as honest as you are, unfortunately 👎 Not saying everyone lies, but everyone definitely doesn't tell the truth!

This actually doesn't seem very likely due to the large amount of applicants and separate volunteer activities everyone has. Also, we didn't have to provide any type of contact person for these activities, so I don't know how that's possible. People will definitely BS in this process.

It kind of blows my mind that people would be stupid enough to lie about something like that, though, when schools could so easily check it out. Maybe not MSU so much, since I don't think they asked for contact info for your activities and they don't do interviews (where it becomes very apparent if you said you were the president of some club but actually only went to the intro meeting to get the free pizza). But still. If you have to lie to get in, then maybe you shouldn't be applying in the first place?

You hit the nail on the head!

That's crazy and I wonder how much the BS'ed that

It's not BS'd, as that person was me. And yes, over high school and college, constituted 11,000 hours. Welcome to the world of overachievement. (it really screwed with grades, so I'm not advocating doing that many).

I figured you might be the same person I was talking about 😉

all of which, might i add, is documented and valid, and very easy to verify. I served as a volunteer EMT, a Children's Miracle Network Ambassador for the Miss America Organization, organized many fundraising events (walks, runs, 5Ks, etc), candy striper in high school, Clinical Care Extender in College, Certified and Volunteer Lifeguard, and that's about half of em. Don't get me wrong, people will CERTAINLY fabricate their EC's in this process; I've seen it all the time. but having invested SO MANY HOURS amongst community service (this was PRIOR to me even wanting to go to medical school; I was a Drama Major in College at UCI and had Broadway dreams for a very very long time), it does a HUGE disservice to those that are being honest throughout the application service. I must say, do not be quick to judge; I merely had an interest in volunteerism and social activism, and was very happy to continually do so. It's a tenet of my family and my upbringing...it's just how we do 😀

Congrats on those achievements and acceptance! Not passing judgement just was curious

haha, yes Dr. Meows, I knew it was you 😉 Just wanting to prematurely dispell any sort of rumors or disbelief about doing extracurriculars. It was no joke, and certainly no BS. I'm not proud of my MCAT, and even less so of my grades. But I AM proud of what I've done, tangibly and socially, in my time trying to balance the aforementioned. Yay!
If anything, this should serve as a reminder and a grain of hope that you don't have to be a Neuroscience genius to get into medical school. You just have to be a capable, competent, and truly empathic and proactive human being. That is all.
