Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This was a big plus for me. Especially when compared to my Bradenton interview the previous day, where I saw students carting around 6-7 large textbooks in wheeled suitcases.

Ideally, I would like to study from lecture notes, podcasts, wikipedia, uptodate and online videos... supplementing with textbooks only when strictly necessary. But that's just me 😎

Does NSU provide uptodate as well?

Agreed. Make sure your plans are set. The last thing you want is to find out you don't have a flight scheduled even though you thought you did.

As far as preparing for the actual interview you should have answers for the typical questions (why medicine, why DO, why our school) and also comb through the SDN interview feedback for more school specific questions. It's very helpful.

I was not asked these questions at my NSU interview. Maybe it was because I worked it into my introductory statements. While introducing myself I intentionally included answers to the typical questions. I did the work so the interviewer did not have to. It also left them able to ask the more interesting questions.

I was asked how I researched NSU. I was honest and listed the Osteopathic Medical School book, The NSU website, and current students that post on SDN. It seemed to go well. The follow-up question was what aspect of the school made me most want to apply? I talked about the community health program where every other week students spend a half day in a physician's office. I explained how I shadowed over 180 hours with the same physician and learned a lot from him about how to be a good doctor that listens to his patients. Furthermore, by the end the doc had trained me how to do an H&P and was sending me into see patients first, then presenting hem to him. It was a great experience! I got a double benefit from that story because one of my interviewers was the person that sets up the shadowing experience for the students.

Yeah the only time I really use the ebooks is for supplement reading if I don't quite understand something. But I do read the physical exam book a lot for Physical Diagnosis. Other than that, I supplement with online resources. Never used uptodate before, but I've heard it is a really good resource.

I did/do as well. My interviewer said "So you said blah blah blah, but tell me more about why you want to be a physician" Seemed like they asked all interviewing that day the same questions though.

Hi everyone, how do my chances look? 3.30, 26Q, awesome LOR (with DO LOR), post-bacc, good ECs, etc?

It depends on when you applied. If you applied early I'd say pretty decent but it you're just now submitting I'm not sure. It sounds like they're booked into January with interviews already.

Looks like this school hardly has any rescheduled/dropped interviews. I have been regularly checking the calendar in hopes of moving my interview date up , but unfortunately there has never been any open dates.

can anyone recommend a place to stay? i am planning on sticking around for two nights so I can see what the gold coast has to offer. i am planning on renting a car, so the shuttle pick up is not a must but i guess can be useful since i would only have to rent a car for one day. the price and cleanliness are my main concerns.

it seems like Hampton Inn is the popular place to stay,, is that right?

any other rec?

Thanks in advance

I liked the Hampton Inn. Enough so that when I go back to scope out housing I'll be staying there again, even if it it's cheaper somewhere else. Using their shuttle for the interview is nice too. They drop you off right at the entrance so that you don't have to worry about finding parking or locating the building. Plus they take you all over at once. It's kind of nice to break the ice then and have some familiar faces going into the room with you.

+1 for the Hampton. Nice room (for a hotel), and close to a big mall with lots of places to eat. I went with a couple of guys to TGI Friday's but there were a lot of choices within 3-4 blocks.

Good luck at the interview. Have fun playing with the robot simulators.

Congrats to everyone who landed an acceptance!!!

Anyone interviewing this Thursday (9/27)?

Yeah hampton seems like it would be the safest bet. There are so many eekie reviews for other cheaper places. I am deathly afraid of bed bugs too.

If I get an acceptance from AZCOM this week you can have my October date.

would you mind PMing me when you are about to drop it so I can grab it ASAP?

Hampton was great for $99. The breakfast in the morning was good for a continental breakfast and they have a 5-7 happy hour, free celebratory drinks for an interview well done!

Hey guys, I thought I'd let you know, I just cancelled my interview on October 4th because I was accepted somewhere else, so now its open!

Go!

I was verified in late July, and was just waiting for my MCAT to be released after taking it again. Does that help? 🙂

I dont understand the point of these posts. Its not like an applicant can do anything about their situation based on this info. Perhaps its cathartic for the person declining the interview, I dunno.

I think if you get invited you'll be interviewing after January but you'll have to wait and see:/ No one really knows.

...it lets those with a later interview date know that there's an open spot if they want to move up their interview date. How is that not useful?

is that date immediately updated? If so then that def makes sense.

Umm...these posts are actually very much appreciated by those of us looking to reschedule.

+pissed+

I posted it to let people know there is an earlier date that they can reschedule to, not for my own "cathartic" purposes. Rolling admissions= earlier date= better chance of acceptance

Yep! As soon as I cancelled, October 4th popped up as "open."

Did anyone try to go and see the beach while you were here? The hotel shuttle guy "offered" to take us for $40 each direction for a total of $80 round trip. The beach is only 7 miles away!! My plane ticket from DC didn't even cost me that much 🙁 so I didn't end up going.
I'm starting to think they were pulling my leg.

Where did you stay? I didn't even attempt the beach. It was fly in, sleep, interview and fly out.

There is a 2000 character limit for the "How did you learn about Osteopathic Medicine" question. Do they expect us to write a short essay for this? What have y'all done??

Also, in describing our work experience and health-care related volunteer activities, should I just copy the descriptions I wrote for the primary application? How detailed are the descriptions expected to be?

I'm at the Hampton Inn - Plantation.
I'm bummed out. I just wanted a short visit to the ocean just to see it. 🙁

yes, write a short essay. Don't just copy-paste the descriptions instead expand on them a bit. Basically, there is no right or wrong way of filling out the secondary. As long as you answer the prompt and remain under the character limit, you should be fine.

So where is a good place to get a two bedroom dwelling that takes a 50 lb Pointer?

I don't remember exact places but I was browsing through forrent.com and other rental sites for houses, townhomes and apartments. It didn't seem like it would be hard to find a place. I have a 50 lb mix so I was worried about the same thing.

I hope you are right. I have a 65 lb lab. I would hate to give her away. she would not do well without me. Just leaving her for the interview almost broke her heart. My family told me that she moped around the house all day while I was gone.

The only thing that I am afraid of is that she is deathly afraid of thunderstorms. Stupid lab is the biggest chicken around. Living in Florida may not be good for her, or the carpet where we live...

A lot of house and town home rentals I saw were tile floored if it makes you feel better 🙂.
I asked a student that gave us the tour about it and she said there were lots of dog friendly places around campus. She grew up in the area so I took her word for it. When I start seriously apartment/house hunting at the beginning of next year I'll make sure to let you guys know what I find 🙂

Got my acceptance package in the mail today 🙂

I am probably gonna live in the graduate dorms like a noob 😍

No, unfortunately I won't 🙁

I love pets but I am not sure I would be good to them as a student doctor. 🙁

Yeah the time commitment issue. I was just asking because I don't think the graduate housing allows pets.

I am sure they don't. Most dorms don't let you have anything but fish which I find pointless.

On my interview date I heard really good things about the graduate dorms, do you have any opinions you would like to share?

I think the only practical advantage would be that you can pretty much roll out of bed and you're almost at HPD. Traffic is a nightmare down here and it took me 25 minutes this morning and I live less than 3 miles from HPD. A little nerve racking on exam mornings because the COM is strict about 8 am rule. You show up at 8:01 and you're SOL.

Having said that, there are quite a few apartment complexes close to school. Some nicer than others. If you look at last year's thread and the year before last, there are some good reviews about housing in the area. I'll dig up the email with housing info and email it to you if you'd like. Unless they gave you that info in the acceptance email or letter.

I e-mailed housing when I got my interview (overly excited pre-med much?). They mailed me a package with the graduate housing info but nothing about apartments. I am pretty sure I am gonna live at the dorms at least during M1 while I'm still getting acclimated to everything. I think that will just make everything a little bit easier on me. The room already comes with furniture, I'm not gonna have to worry about paying bills...etc...

do you guys recommend thay i stay for a couple of days to check out the area?

Yeah definitely! My interview was on Thursday and stayed until Sunday. Definitely check out Miami if you never been before!

This is a rather silly question seeing that California is the most populous state in the US, but for current students, are there a lot of Californians in your class?

Ahh yes, that would certainly make life much easier for you. It was a pain in the @$$ moving down here. First because it was five days before class started. Second I had to pack up all of my stuff (would have done that anyway for moving to LECOM-B, plus I had already found a place in Bradenton). Third, I had to find housing that weekend and move down with only a week's worth of clothes and be there for Sunday white coat/start of classes on Monday. Ugh, that was the most stressful five days of my life. And to top it all off, even though I found a place that weekend before class I couldn't move in til five days after that, and even then I didn't have all my stuff moved down until a week later. So I ended up staying at a hotel for the first few days of class, then I lived without a bed, furniture, or clothes for another week. I think I'm getting a headache just typing this out

Despite all that, I couldn't be happier now. 😀
