Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this is random, but what is the food like here on interview day?

Out of the interviews that I went to, Nova's lunch was certainly the best. It is exactly what the posters above said: sandwiches, wraps, fruit, cookies. I agree about the protein bar and I've mentioned before to take some of the crackers in the jars in the waiting rooms. It's a while before lunch and you don't want to be dragging before then.

Got some chocolate mint cliff bars last night. Two for a dollar. Great deal!

When I was there on 9/11 they had some muffins in the waiting room in the morning. They actually told us to have one while we waited because it would be a long time until lunch.

I also tried one of the crackers in the jar... I didn't think that they were anything special.

Ooo Mr Refined Palate. I think they're awesome, although every time I go into admissions for them I'm usually starving and anything tastes amazing then.

I'm really bummed I missed out on the crackers; the muffin selection was a little lacking i.e. missing that spectacular blueberry variety. I almost didn't accept their offer because of it.

🤣

I know what you mean. We must hold to standards. If there are no blueberry muffins at the interview, who knows what kind of stuff they will try to pull... They may even try to pass off robots as "patients" for us to learn with. That would be horrible. Ha Ha.

Depends on what you classify as "robots." Many schools have simulated patient bots that look like a human, blink like a human, breathe like a human, have a pulse and blood pressure, etc. That's a very important tool to use before going on rotations and then residency. You have to know how people respond to drugs before you administer them in real life scenarios. You can't learn everything from real standardized patients during pre-clinical years.

Ya, I know. I was making a joke... If the school can't afford real blueberry muffins, then how can they afford to have real patients... Maybe it wasn't that funny. Sarcasm does not transfer too well through a keyboard.

I understand why the mechanical patients are used. I also saw them at the interview. Pretty impressive technology. The dorsalis pedes pulse was a little funny feeling compared to a real person, but it gets the point across. At least it was in the right spot.

I was in group one too, now i need to figure out who you were...

It wouldn't be hard to figure out. I was the only person not wearing a black or gray suit.

Now I need to figure out who you were!

Sorry it is indeed difficult at times to get sarcasm over the internet. Nonetheless, I still make attempts just as you do 😎

My Nova interview seems like forever ago, I don't remember everything from it. I remember what I had for lunch, though lol.

I'm tempted not to reply to you anymore. You have somehow outpaced me in posts and I feel that this is utterly unacceptable.

Jk. Maybe.

LOL, I am the opposite I forget what I ate immediately after I am done eating it.

Out of sight out of mind...

Haha true. I was just incredibly hungry when lunch came. I inhaled the first plate of food and went back for a cookie and more fruit.

I was disappointed that they gave us cantaloupe in the wake of a salmonella outbreak from contaminated cantaloupe.

Where was the outbreak? I haven't heard anything about it.

Idk where the fruits were from but it was an issue in the midwest last month. Im sure you guys get your cantaloupes somewhere different than we do though.

Hmm.. here are a couple things I found.

Burch Farms of North Carolina apparently recalled their melons. And according to one estimate cantaloupes have been responsible for more than 35 outbreaks since 1990.

Do not be jealous that I am not yet in med school and have time to post things on SDN. See how much I decide to post a year from now, I doubt it will be as much as you! 😉

Ouch.

Finally, scientific evidence that its cool for me to hate cantaloupe! Score!

Even though you come from out West, you must switch (if you haven't already) to Florida oranges. Florida oranges >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> California oranges.

Apparently the cantaloupe we have in the USA isn't real cantaloupe.. at least thats what Alton Brown says.

Cantaloupe. Kantaloupe. I still don't like it.

I hope you know my comment about posting while in med school was in now way ridiculing you. Nuthin but respect bruthah.

I know nothing about the intricacies of oranges. If they are orange, and not someone else's, I will eat them. I DO know that I prefer tropicana OJ over Florida brand OJ though. Dunno if that's a cardinal sin or not, but that's the truth. Lol

It's all good 😀

I believe Tropicana uses Florida oranges. 👍

This NeuroLAX/Dudeliness relationship is getting a little out of hand. You might need to have a dedicated thread for this.

Sorry! After my last post I was like, "thread hijacker!"

Not a problem. Just making conversation. We have all this time before next fall and I have practically nothing to do now that I am done interviewing.

Sounds familiar... Where are you from? Maybe that will remind me? I was the snowboarder, if that sounds familiar.

👍 😀

I remember you know lol. I was from st. Louis and used to play hockey

Wait, you snowboard? Now we can be best friends!
More thread hijacking! 😀

YES!!! My last interview is tomorrow. I work part time and have been out if school for a year. I guess I could do some light reading like the Robbins and cotran pathologic basis of disease or some other goodness, but nah! I'm gonna rack up my post count by hijacking SDN threads! Yeah baby!

I would like to offer a public service announcement. I am a 3rd year here at NOVA. The administration here is completely incompetent. In fact, I would go as far as to say that dealing with the hoops and BS and administration has been harder than medical school itself. I have let it just kind of roll off my shoulders the past two years, because I knew my time here was just temporary. Now things are starting to affect my residency applications and other issues. Anyhow. I would not recommend this school to anyone.

Whats going wrong with your residency applications?

The fact that almost every thread has one of these "caution: don't come here, you'll hate your life" posts..make me desensitized to all of them. Apparently if you go to D.O. school your life will suck no matter where you go. Get excited guys!

Have you seen one for DMU? I like that school. A lot

Either way, totally agree with you.

Personally, no. But I don't lurk that thread like I do others. I'm sure somewhere on that campus there lies an unhappy individual though.

Agreed. I can't take these people seriously anymore.
Complaining their lives away at an internet forum...what good does that do? 😕😕

Well I think people do it because it might be an effective way to change the school? Maybe the school will read something about it and change for the fear thst they are getting a bad rep?
