Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would honestly wait for the invite and schedule your LECOM-B interview a little bit later, assuming you have other interview options for earlier.

Imagine you were courting two women. One of them is Nancy (Nova), and the other is Brittany (LECOM-B). Nancy and Brittany live within close proximity to one another. You have a date scheduled with Brittany, and you have yet to hear back from Nancy. You call up Nancy, and you say, "Say, girl, when are you going to let me pick you up for a date? I'm in the area on Tuesday because I'm going to holla at my other girl, Brittany, and I don't really think you deserve a trip of your own so why don't we just schedule our date for later in the night"?

I don't think Nancy would be pleased.

That was a really good way to put it. Alas, I did not see this post before I sent the email. I made sure to not sound pushy and did not mention where my interview was located. Just that I had one in october and would really like to make one trip (flying from ohio). It was short and sweet and I made sure that I did not sound like I expected an interview. I guess we shall have to wait and see!

I don't think that's true. Many people have to spend >$500 on flights and then >$200 on hotels to come to the Florida schools and I am sure that the admission committees completely understand that money is an issue for some people. They know that you are applying to other schools and if anything, having more interviews should make you look more desirable.

I really do not think that they take it personally when you say that you have an interview at lecom, but you REALLY want to also take advantage of being in the location for the chance of interviewing at Nova.

I sent an in the area email and the next day got an II. Everyone else did as well, but I guess my point is that it doesn't make you look any less attractive as an applicant. I think that the email should be well worded to express how much you want to attend an interview and if you were being considered for one, could it please be at a time where you don't have to spend so much extra money that you may not have/take so much time off from work.

im not a fan of the humidity in florida. might drive me crazy after a year

Lecom-B is on the other side of the state. It's not really near NSU at all. It's an easy 3.5 hour drive. I guess that's convenient if you don't mind the driving but I wouldn't recommend it. No need to add stress of driving to unfamiliar places / trying to coordinate "perfect" interview trips IMO.

Thank you for sharing that!!
Luckily my aunt lives in Florida and I have been to the state enough that it will not be that "strange" to me. The 3.5 hour will not be bad at all especially if I can save on airfare!

Any idea of when the next batch of interview invites will be released? It sounds like they have been silent for the past two weeks.

Coming from the north east, it is much more reasonable to fly to sarasota, drive to davie, and then fly out of ft lauderdale than it is to fly to sarasota and fly back to the northeast, then fly to ft laudredale and fly back to the northeast.

It isn't perfect by far, but it saves a lot of money!

We haven't heard our decisions yet, those of us who have already interviewed.

lol im doing the opposite. Flying to Ft Lauderdale interview then driving to sarasota for LECOMB and flying out from sarasota.

I know this has been asked and re-asked throughout this thread, but can anyone provide their experience with turnaround times regarding secondary submission to interview invite?

A friend of mine submitted his secondary about a month ago and hasn't heard back yet. Much to my chagrin, Nova will finally be getting primary this coming week, and I'll be completing their secondary as soon as I receive it.

I was complete 7/25 (submitted my secondary 7/23) and I received my ii 8/16. OOS.

Ive been complete 4 weeks, no interview yet. Have any II gone out past few days?

I believe my II was about a week after being complete but II's seem to be harder to come by lately.

Could someone outline 4th year for me? I remember seeing it somewhere but can't seem to find it now. Is it 8 weeks of rural and the rest electives? Any restrictions on the electives? Thank you!

4th year may be changing. i am currently a 4th year, and my year is currently structured as 2 rural "selectives" which are assigned to you. 1 rural elective, which you choose and can be pretty much fudged in some way to meet your needs. An EM rotation.

the rest of the months are electives. July can be taken as an elective or it can be used as a study month for step 2 (or vacation even though your really supposed to only supposed to use it for studying). You also get one month of "independent study" which can be used at any time for a rotation/vacation. You may end up using some of your independent study time over the course of the year because the rotations don't match up quite right and you have to use a couple days off in between.

the best advice anyone gave me for 3/4th years at Nova is that you get 2 "excused" absences off for each rotation. Make sure you utilize them.

So question for current students and also those applying here...

I am so in love with this school but the tuition is scaring me off..

How are you all paying for it? And how do you feel about the massive debt associated with Nova.. I read an article that Nova is in the top 10 for most debt when you graduate.

Just one more quick question:

Do they notify of ii via email, phone, or through the web portal?

Loans. Lots and lots of loans. My wife and are expecting to owe >800k after we both finish med school and neither of us care one bit. If you're single, just dump half of your post-residency salary towards paying them off. We plan on putting one of our entire salaries towards paying off our debt once we both complete our residencies. Seems like a sound investment to me.

Crossing my fingers that next week is a big week for us 8/27ers! For the next couple weeks, every email 'ding' is going to be met with anxious anticipation to find out if it's Accepted/Waitlist/Rejected from NSU or anything else

I'm already that way! This application cycle has made it impossible for me to part from my cell for even a few moments. If that event happens I get all nervous and shaky when I pick it back up and scroll through the emails or missed calls lol. And I thought just premed courses made you neurotic!

Seriously, my stomach drops everytime I see that "Inbox (1)" pop up...very unproductive work weeks ahead...

For some reason this thread is't showing up properly on my computer and making it hard to go through 24 pages of information.

I have a question about the secondary.

For question: "How did you learn about osteopathic medicine?" do they want a quick reply (1-2 sentences) or 250 word style reply? There was a shadowing experience I had which made me realized I wanted to do the DO route.

"I grew up in a community of _____ (population)". I moved around a lot. I basically went from NYC to a rural area that had about 2,000 people then to an area with about 500,000. Should I put a 3-4 sentence reply of the transition?

For the volunteer listing do they just want us to list positions or add in duration and description?

Sorry for the dumb questions.

I wrote a couple of paragraphs for the why DO question. Some people wrote a couple of sentences. I think if you have a meaningful experience, you should definitely express it.

For the community size question, you can discuss where you spent the majority of your time and then elaborate on others.

As for the volunteer/job stuff, I just listed the job, title, and period. I didn't describe the positions.

I have 3.7sgpa/ 3.56 cgpa/23 mcat. Over 100 hrs clinical volunteering/ some non clinical. Chances look okay for an ii?

Yup. All the schools I'm worried about

You could have posted in the Chances thread.

The Class of 2018 thread is a great resource! You can see all GPAs, MCAT breakdowns, where people have gotten ii and even acceptances. Much more productive than posting in all threads and getting one response.

Ouch.... big time. I would retake that asap.

Good luck to tomorrow's group! I'll try to stop by and say hi in the morning!

Sent from my Galaxy S4

When is too late to apply to NOVA? I'm still waiting on verification

I was complete late August...when should I start getting worried if I dont get IIs?

3.8/26/OOS

From the students who interviewed today... What types of questions are you guys getting during the interview?

acceptance will probably be sent on this Friday. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was complete on July 24th and havent heard anything since. Do I still have a chance at this school or they rejected me already?

Are waitlist/rejections sent via email or only acceptances? I know we are supposed to recieve a physical letter in the mail regardless.

Quick question....have you ever received a call from Nova (ie: for an ii)? I missed a call from a FLL number this morning, and when I called back, it was Nova's main switchboard number, so I don't know who called me directly. Is this a school to invites via phone?! I logged on, and can't seem to find a status update or anything, so I'm anxiously awaiting for *something* to happen!

It was probably to let you know that your application is complete. They send interview invites via email.

If you're worried, you may want to send an email to the admissions office.

Q: How did you learn about osteopathic medicine?

Did y'all elaborate a lot on this question?

ahhhh I just submitted mine without thinking about how it could be answered in an essay format!!! T_T I thought it was just a simple and sweet question. FAIL.

Sigh, time to pray.

Thanks. I just got off the phone with them. They said they were going to call this morning, but didn't because of the time difference (obviously, they dialed and then realized it was before 6am my time!). Just like you said-application complete and under review. Thought it would have been a quick turn-around for an ii, but hey....I'd take it. 😉
