Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats... I see that you are also accepted to Meharry; that is going to be probably a tough decision since you mentioned from previous post that you live in S. FL.

Yes it is going to be very tough, I am siding with Meharry but, the thought of how much cheaper it would be for me to attend NSU vs. Meharry is so tempting.

For all of our sakes, I truly hope not...

Nonetheless, it has been over a month, so I'm guessing there will be a few hundred interviewees' apps to comb through. The fact that Anastasia isn't there anymore probably doesn't help, since she was the one sending out the notifications before.

I'm really surprised that NSU is sending out acceptances to people that interviewed in October without letting those of us know who interviewed back in September. I'm not too impressed as I was under the impression that files are viewed in a sequential manner based on interview dates. This doesn't seem very efficient if they are flipping back and forth between earlier and later applications......not too happy about how the school is conducting things this year

I feel for those of you waiting since September, but they must think they get the best class by waiting for a lot of interviews to happen then pick the best out of the bunch, wait again and pick the best, etc. Apparently early interviews mean nothing here, it sucks but it is what it is, and has no influence on my choice of school at least. This is a new system for them too, unfortunately their learning curve landed on our interview year.

For those who have yet to interview, good luck and would you please ask them about their selection process post interview??

I was notified this morning at 930 est. gpa 3.29 sgpa 3.45 mcat 27. Highest composite mcat 28. I'm not traditional with a post bacc gpa of a 3.93

Interesting we have similar mcat but opposite GPAs..that is.. my undergrad was a 3.95/3.92 sci and my grad gpa was a 3.5/3.3 sci
Congrats tho. I really hope this school picks meeee

Thanks I hope they pick you too and your gpa is great!! It's interesting to learn how different schools pick. I was rejected pre-interview to CCOM, LECOM and AT STill and then accepted to Campell and now NOVA. You jut never know what each school is looking for.

Interesting I got ii to CCOM and Lecom, but those are NOT the schools I wanna go to. Everyone warned me that admission to med school would be a crapshoot. Are you definitely going to NOVA?

Unless I get into a NJ school where I am from I will definitely be going to NOVA

anyone know what's the current state of administration and will it affect the school?

😵

Good luck! I'm a NJ resident too. ... but so far they're not showing me love. Got denied from Cooper and wait listed at Rowan post-interview. And I havent heard back from NJMS or RWJ lol

For those who we placed on the WL,

I called admission this morning and was told that they won't be considering us until they have interviewed everybody. In other words, no one will be pulled off the list until the end of March.

that doesn't sound very reassuring....I am assuming by that point most students on WL will have matriculated elsewhere

I will be accepting my offer. Baring an unusual circumstance, I will be at NOVA next year. Very excited. Best of luck to everyone.

Got a letter in the mail today. I have been classified as an "Alternate" candidate. It also says that alternates are not ranked and to not contact he admissions department. Congrats to those with acceptances.

Sorry to hear that. When did you interview?

Thanks for the update. I was hoping they would be pulling people off now.

I interviewed on 9/24. The letter was dated Oct 25th.

I interviewed that day too. I haven't gotten any mail yet, but I am guessing I will soon. I feel like many of the early interviewees have been put on this waitlist while the later groups received acceptances. Its just unfortunate because it seems that getting things done early was not as beneficial as they made it seem on their website. Either that, or the first few groups just were not as appealing as the later ones. Not sure really. Really sad about how things are going so far because out of all the schools I fell in love with Nova. Good luck to all those who have been accepted so far!

Interviewed 10/15. I believe my interview experience was not like what others have posted soooooo I just thought I would give my input. I was totally grilled during my interview. They pointed out every single flaw. I left the room feeling horrible, thinking that my chances were completely blown. However, I just received an acceptance email on 10/28! So if anyone had a similar experience, there is still hope!

On what sort of things did they grill you?
Periods of inactivity during and after college, grades, experiences. Just in case, I would recommend being able to explain any holes or flaws you may have in your application.

My interview was better much relaxed but, I was asked about why my MCAT score was so low.(I was ask this on my interviews at Meharry and Howard as well). And at each interview , I put the blame on myself which, is the proper and truthful way to do it. I think a lot of people would blame others or their situation at that time for their flaws and that would lead right to a waitlist or rejection.

I think medical schools realize that candidates that don't take the blame, will blame the medical school they attend when their grades are low, when their boards scores are low, when they don't get into the residency program of their choice, etc.

+1.

For every interview, the bare minimum questions you need to prepared for are: "Why this school?" "Why DO?" "Why a physician?" "Why medicine?". If you know there are holes in your application, there's also a good chance you'll get asked about those too. Not having a decent response prepared is pretty foolish.

They didn't email you the decision first? Or did the mail come after?

I didn't think my interview went super well either so I was shocked when I got accepted. They asked me why I took the mcat 3 times. Why I did a post bacc and was not pre med in undergrad. They also asked me to give my worst qualities and I admitted to being stubborn. Then they asked after a fight with my parents what would they say about me. It was a little different but I really think they were just trying to see how I handle criticism because in medical school I bet we will get a lot.

Hey everyone, congrats to all those accepted! Does anyone know the email to contact admissions?

For those that have been accepted, did they notify you via a phone call or just email?
I interviewed 10/10 and I'm still waiting for a response.
I remember they were saying the committee meets bi-weekly, and I think the last meeting was Oct 22nd. I'm hoping they review previous interviewees and waitlisted applicants at each meeting..

Yeah I interviewed 9/24 too and still haven't received any actual mail or e-mail. Hopefully we'll be hearing something back soon though. I agree w/ everything you said though. I fell in love w/ it too and its sad how this process is going so far.

Scratch that, I just received a letter in the mail saying I was an "Alternate" candidate too. 🙁 Really sucks because I did fall in love w/ the school. Interviewed 9/24. Good luck to all those accepted thus far!

just canceled my interview for nov 12th. Good luck everyone!

Yes I did. Well, I think so, is there anything else I have to do to withdraw my app after canceling my interview?

Yes you need to contact admissions. Canceling your interview has nothing to do with your app because you could reschedule whenever.

Does anyone know if NOVA accepts electronic delivery of reference letters from Interfolio?

Has anybody else been under review for 3 months or more. I called admissions today and my application is still under review I was complete late July/early August. Thank you!
