Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got a call today saying my file was ready for review! My letters aren't in so I was surprised. I asked if they extend interview invites before letters and they said yes, but won't offer acceptance until letters are in.
When did you submit the app? My letters are not in yet either but I haven't got a ready for review call 🙁.

DO schools are a bit different when it comes to LORs. They review letters after they interview. You send letters after they invite you to interview.

What is the definition of "native English speaker"? If I learned and used English from early childhood, would that make me a native speaker?

Does anyone know what documentation of English literacy is needed for non-native English speakers? I contacted Admissions office but did not receive a response.

Did you find out?

Probably a TOEFL? That's usually what they require for English literacy.

Yes there is always an exception but the grand majority request letters after invite and a few request them with the secondary. Never seen one that wants them with the primary.
Two right off the bat are at still kirksville and Edward via vcom.
I'm sure there are more than you think. Just don't want to give people the impression of what you're saying without them looking it up.

Did anyone elaborate on the question, "How did you learn about osteopathic medicine?".

I can't decide if I should just stick to a one sentence answer or if I should 'go for it' and add a few extra sentences about how my experiences inspired me to 'go DO'.

I submitted it the day I got the email invite, which was June 23rd I believe.

I elaborated a bit but still kept it short. My answer was just one paragraph.

Both those schools want letters with your secondary as in order to mark your application as complete. It is plain as day on both websites. Nobody request letters with the primary application because there is no way to do this. Some it is with secondary most it is post interview invite and some it is post interview.

Alright, since I'm not the only one considering a paragraph, I'll write one as well. 5 sentences here.

Feels so great to submit my first secondary! Good luck everyone! 🙂

I'm trying to send an email to the admissions office ([email protected]) but it's not getting through...
Is there an another email address that I might be able to use?

I called Admissions and they said I don't need any additional documents since I went to high school and undergrad in the US.

Mine was one short sentence...

For the section "List and briefly describe your significant health care-related volunteer activities..." did you guys include physician shadowing? Or only volunteer experiences where you actually physically contributed to the organization?

i did not include physician shadowing, but it wouldnt hurt mentioning it

So how long after you guys were verified did you receive an invite to fill out the secondary? Did NSU supply a pin for the secondary along with the invitation?

I was verified 6/13 and received the secondary email 6/23. There was no pin provided. You make up your own pin.

How long after you submitted all your materials did you receive a call saying that your file was complete? I had everything in by last Friday but I have yet to hear anything, except an email saying my secondary was received.

This place is my top choice. Waiting for AACOMAS to process (1 transcript lagging). Science GPA 3.56; Cumulative GPA 3.61; MCAT 26 (8/8/10). Letter from prehealth committee, 2 professors, 1 podiatrist, and a cardiothoracic surgeon (D.O.) on the way.

Keep in mind the tuition for this year is $49k for OOS, and a 70% attendance policy, and either wear professional attire to class or scrubs. And because it's block schedule, we have exams every week.

Just giving you guys a heads up on stuff. 🙂

From what I have seen everyone just wears scrubs. Also I talked to a med student who said he never went to class. How is that possible if there is an attendance policy? Also I thought they no longer give in state and out of state prices anymore.

Goodluck and may the odds be ever in your favor!!!

The attendance policy just changed. Scrubs is the norm, so nothing new there.

Got my call today. Talked to Dan for a little bit. Invited me over to his place for some shuffleboard, but I have too many secondaries to fill out. 3.1 cGPA, 3.2 sGPA, 26 MCAT (8/8/10). I would love to go here. I'm ready to be somewhere beautiful while studying medicine!

Aww, man. I don't think I wanna go here anymore. I hate class... and scrubs.

I wonder if it will hurt me by stating I learned about OM because my undergrad is located next to a COM. A COM that is not NOVA. I'm just worried they might think why I am applying to their COM when there is one near me. Thoughts?

They wonder why everybody is applying to their school. It is why they ask why NOVA?... They seem to forget the obvious reason... because they are a med school and its in south Florida. Just like when so many people forget that school are not looking for reasons to reject you but reason to accept you. Don't lose sleep over the proximity of your undergrad to XYZ, NOVA sure won't. Be chill...

Thank you. It is just that this whole process is so gruesome and no one wants to go through it twice.

Actually this is my second time around and it is way less stressful than my first. It helps if you are way more prepared. Helps you hold your zen.

I wish you luck this cycle. Hope you get in.

NSU-COM students - are you available to answer a question? How do-able do you think it is to commute from Miami? I love NSU-COM, but I'm worried a bit about finances (I know, I know...loans are always a possibility), but I have an offer from extended family to live in Miami basically free of rent and with some meals provided. (They have an extra condo they aren't using, but pay for).

What are your thoughts? Another benefit is that my extended family includes a nurse and MD who work closely with the Miami hospital and could help with connections there.

Your call, but my gut reaction is no. Traffic is unpredictable and you do not want to be late for exams (if you're late, you're SOL). As far as I know, you will need to plan to be on-campus and in the lecture hall for at least 70% of each of your classes to avoid consequences to your final grade. By all means, network as much as possible and take advantage of your family's help, but be realistic. School comes first.

I say take the offer if its free housing. I know of students who travel all the way from west palm (about 55 mins north of davie) and they never had a problem. Just make sure to leave really early to account for traffic.

Are you even accepted to NSU? But the commute is fine.. I know people who commute from Miami to Nova. Just takes time management and early planning. Avoid the traffic by going/leaving school when you know the traffic isn't so bad. It's definitely possible. Just make sure your relatives let you study in peace lol.

Heh, curious to know what they say now given the attendance policy change.

Does "health-care related activities" include research?

Update: They said research is fine

Any word on how strict they are about the 2 science prof requirement? You think a science prof and PI could count?

Same, the DO I shadowed mentioned that he will not write me a letter until he seems my MCAT results. So, not I have to wait till I write the mcat and the results to come in, and give him still a couple weeks to write the letter. Really annoying, but what can you do.

supposedly nova looks at your app before the letters come in, but lots of other schools do not
