Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

I am really disappointed that this school doesn't utilize the e-mail system well, and they are forcing me to resend 4 letters because my prof didn't sign when they sent it electronically through AACOMAS. now I have to ask them to resend their letters, argghh!

Who told you to do this? None of my letters were signed because they were submitted by the evaluators through AACOMAS. Are they expecting us to send in hard copies?

they called me on my phone and asked me to tell my profs to sign them and resend. It was ridiculous! my profs sent them electronically that's why they didn't sign it by hand.

Hey all!

If I graduated college just this past may, should I write my current job in the area that it asks about employment during the school year? I want them to know what I'm doing during my time off (what work im doing).

Thanks!

No, I think they mean work during the school year (while you were still in school).

I read somewhere that the interviews have had lots of OOS peeps! I'm OOS and interviewing Tuesday! Excited to see the school though I have been forewarned about it

Just got the application complete call (was missing the letters before). Now we wait. I am also curious to know as far as to what you were warned about

Do any of you know the average turnover time from getting the application complete call to possibly being called/emailed for an interview?
Based on a couple examples from this thread, it seems to be taking anywhere from 1 to 2 months to get an answer. There is no telling if there is a difference for IS vs OOS. I have been told that they speed up as the cycle goes on but I don't have any evidence to support this claim unfortunately

this school... I had received the all complete and ready for review like at the beginning of august, sent in transcripts as asked. I called and they said my app is still under review but they don't have my mcat scores... Next they won't have my name

I know someone who has a very good friend that is a third year at Nova who said she basically had to teach herself step 1
Idk if there are any schools that spend time preparing their students for the steps. All of the core classes you take in your first 2 years are the foundation for the step 1, so how well you learn everything in those first 2 years will directly affect your score. I have friends who are currently going to NOVA and you have to teach everything to yourself (it is an insane amount of material i am told). At the same time, it is after all medicine, and it will be an insane amount of information everywhere. The professors will present the information to you, but it is up to you to find the strategies that best work for you. So yeah you have to teach everything to yourself, but i think that is the way it works everywhere (maybe Lecom's problem based strategy is an exception to this rule).

I am sure there are issues with NOVA (it is kind of hard to get in touch with the admissions people and the campus needs to have some updates for example), but all in all, i believe it is a really good school

That happened to me too... It makes me feel better that it's not just me having issues....

I used her exact words but she may have meant level 1 comlex. The gist was that her friend felt very unprepared for boards. I don't know if I agree with that. A few schools I've interviewed at specifically state they teach for the boards. Going to a school where students say they "teach themselves" is concerning for me, personally.

As i was saying previously, their admissions office is not the most organized one out there. I was told today that they would not need my transcripts until after i received an acceptance notice but i keep reading about how they have asked some applicants for their transcripts. I feel there is a significant lack of communication going on

Sorry by "teach themselves" i meant coming up with what works best with you. I did not mean that you are left there to your own devices. You are taught and provided with all the into you will need. I agree with you though and now i know that some schools actually dedicate time to preparing you (makes sense since those scores will be key to their students' match success). At the same time, that feeling of unpreparedness is fairly common to us the more neurotic medical students/prestudents.

I called aacomas and they said its there. Called the admin dept and they found it... They said my file's been ready for review in the system since July 31, just a lot of applicants
Wow if they haven't gotten around to yours in over two months, god forbid any hiccups, the earliest they'll get to mine is next year

Called admissions, no need to submit any transcripts unless you are accepted. I'm close to 70 with Lizzy score and literally nothing in almost 3 months. I'm guessing that's a sign of the silent reject pile.

Ain't no way in heck a person with a 70 should be rejected, I actually whole heartedly believe they are overwhelmed with applications since so many people applied this year.
So far I have not heard of anyone even being accepted while other schools starting accepting their first batch of students in late august.
Nova most likely started two months later so that they could have a more complete pool of students to give interviews from.
so add this two month delay to your timeline.

I hear last year they over accepted students and were fined.i guess they are being more meticulous now

I agree with this 100%. There is no way that a 68-70 LizzyM does not get an interview. The only things i can think of is saying something like "oh being a DO is really not what i want to do but whatever" in your PS. Besides that, i don't see anything else that would mean a rejection (i am assuming no criminal past). You may get a rejection after the interview, but no way in hell before it

Lets put it statistically in a way that will let everyone sigh a bit of relief
In 2012 147,000 people applied to DO schools
out of those 147,000 applicants only 53,000 had Lizzy's greater to or equal to 60
That year 61,000 were accepted so that means 8,000 with Lizzy's below 60 were accepted.
Take this information as you may and apply any proportions you may like.
But the way that I see it with a Lizzy close to a 70 your chances of being rejected are very very slim

I have a LizzyM of 64 and not one interview from a ton of schools and I was complete well over a month ago. Even got a phonecall saying I was complete from this place. No idea what to do.

1 rejection, rest are silences, but I got a secondary from a school that pre-screens so I can't have any red flags, right? Agh. I want to call but I don't want to piss anyone off.

Stay in bright spirits. I understand this is a tough process, but you have to stay positive.

I know. But I go to the specific discussion threads for schools that are in my home state, and see people with equal or worse stats that were complete like 1-2 weeks after me, also IS and getting interviews, and wonder why I'm hearing nothing. Do they review them out of order? Is one of my letter writers evil? I just don't know. My adviser said I had a positive committee letter . . .

Stay strong. They are a bit backed up. How is your LizzyM split? What i mean is lets say evenly (3.4 and a 30), or unevenly (3.9 and a 25).

I got the complete call on Monday and II Tuesday. This was mid september. OOS. This was a very quick turnover, I think I was pretty lucky and fortunate.

Does anyone know the format for interviews here? Open file vs. closed? Panel vs. 1 on 1 vs. 2 on 1?

I'm in the exact same boat....I've been complete since 8/3 and my app is still "under review". My stats are split 3.8 and 28...I'm also waiting on another mcat score that will be released in about a week. Really getting nervous because it seems like many people were marked complete after me with the same or possibly worse stats and have already gotten IIs 🙁

Hi All, if you have an upcoming interview at Nova, good luck! Honestly, in the past, getting in from the interview was a breeze (all except one person from group was admitted... the one person is in the MBS program here at Nova). The interview is usually with a physician, a professor and you. It's open-file. They will ask you things straight off your application. Be prepared to elaborate on everything you wrote. No trick questions. To prepare, print out and re-read your AACOMAS and then read up on the school (study material they send you). Nova (though not my top choice... was really hoping for my state schools for financial reasons) was by far my favorite interview. The interview day is truly enjoyable. They do a great job at selling the school to you. The interview portion is over early and it lasts about 15 minutes, the rest of the day is your to enjoy and learn about the school.

I posted a lot of reviews about things I like and don't like about Nova, but I'm only one student. Like every school, there are going to be people that love it, like it, are lukewarm about it, dislike it and hate it.

Nova is not a big stat school (I know people here with MCAT scores in the low 20s and people that didn't get in with scores in the 30s). They really want to see dedication to health care. I do feel though to succeed here, you want to make sure you have a really strong science background (regardless of your MCAT score). With several tests each week, if you've only taken intro bio and the minimum pre-reqs, you'll be better served at a school with a block schedule (have a little more time to troubleshoot between tests). If you have a strong science background, you'll do great at Nova.

Good luck!

I'm in-state with a 3.5 cgpa, 3.6 sgpa, 31 mcat and still nothing. Complete since mid July and getting nervous also. It's really disheartening.

Me too! I have also called a bunch of times and they really haven't given me any sort of update.

I really hate their handsigned document policy. I just found out my physician letter wasn't handsigned so I have to have him reupload a handsigned version. Very annoying. For people in my situation, how did you have your letter writer resend the letters? Is it possible to update them through AACOMAS or did you have them physically mail a copy?
