Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi! I interviewed on 11/5 and still haven't heard anything! I'm glad I'm not the only one because my anxiety has been killing me. Lol🙄

Does this school send complete e-mails? I haven't heard anything from them and it says they received all of my documents on 11/17.

How are the research opportunities at NSU? Is it easy to find and maintain research?

I feel like nothing LECOM-B offers can make up for their questionable rotations. Quality of rotations, I feel, is the most important aspect of any school since that is where you develop the skills needed to succeed in your audition rotations and eventually residency. Aside from that LECOM-B is a great school but NSU is a clear choice here, at least to me

Well, comparing the 2015 match lists, there does not seem to be a significant difference. Actually, LECOM-B's match list seems slightly favorable when you look at the proportion of those who end up in Internal/Family Med.

LECOM-B (Class size of 180) - 5 Anesthesiology, 66 Internal/Family Med, 15 General/Ortho Surg, 19 Emergency Med, 7 Radiology, 3 Ophthalmology

Nova (Class size of 236) - 3 Anesthesiology, 109 Internal/Family Med, 14 General/Ortho Surg, 18 Emergency Med, 8 Radiology, 1 Ophthalmology

I am not hating on Nova at all - I am simply trying to make the best decision as I have been accepted to both schools. LECOM-B is so much cheaper and in a cheaper area.

Having a tough time deciding between here and LECOM-B. At first, I thought it was a no-brainer, and I was set on Nova. However, I have been considering the tuition and cost of living differences for the areas (tuition - 50k/yr for Nova, 30k/yr for LECOM). Also, I feel like LECOM makes up for its questionable rotations by having top board scores, and Nova's excellent rotations are balanced by its first year not being taught specifically for medical school. Match lists don't seem to be significantly different, either.

The big thing with LECOM-B is it's curriculum. If I remember correctly, it's PBL based. You're going to have to do some reflecting and figure out if that's something you'll benefit from. The people I know that chose LECOM-B over Nova/other schools did so because they loved PBL and knew that was how they were going to succeed.

I'm not really sure what you meant by the bolded but I want to clarify that the M1 curriculum at Nova is a medical school curriculum. You'll learn anatomy, physio, biochem, histo, neuroanatomy, micro, pharm, path, etc, pretty much your basic sciences.

What I was talking about with the bolded was that the first year is taught under the general umbrella of the health professionals school and not the medical school specifically. That's how it is, right?

Your basic science classes yes. They are taught by faculty in the College of Medical Sciences. Even if those professors aren't from the COM, they do include medical tie-ins to their lectures (i.e. with a deficiency of x enzyme patients are born with abc disease and present with xyz symptoms). IMO, M1 year shouldn't be a dealbreaker but to each his/her own.

Is there a facebook group for Accepted students c/o 2020? 🙂

I see... It's not necessarily a deal-breaker. It's just that I already have about $50k of loans, and I'm not completely sold on why I should spend the extra money on Nova.

So for all of y'all that interviewed with me on 11/5...just sent an email to Maricela, and received a reply that final decisions should be out be 12/18. Idk if this just means they're mailing my rejection (inner pessimist speaking) or if everyone will find out then. Good luck to everyone interviewing, planning to interview, or hoping to interview! I loved Nova!

Hi! I've been wondering about this all week too! I interviewed on 11/5. Did she say why the decision is now delayed?!

If they're all the same to you, then by all means go to the cheaper school. But there is a pretty big difference in terms of curriculum and rotations. Those are two major factors to consider when deciding between schools, so I encourage you to really look into what's going to benefit you the most, whether that's going to LECOM or NSU.

I think that means the accepted students will find out by the 4th (so tomorrow!) and the waitlisted and rejected students should find out by the 18th via snail mail. Just a guess! And I'm pretty sure no one from the Nov 5th group has been informed about their decision so don't worry!

Well let me know if you find out then!!!

She just said that Dec 4th was a tentative date; I know during the actual interview day they said "Dec 4th at the latest" but telling myself that theres still hope and I'm not just waiting for a rejection is kinda nice lol

You should be fine. My non science was technically a science prof.

Nope :/ I'm anxious though...papa needs a good Christmas gift this year.
No word for me either. Maybe we're all rejects? LOL jk don't freak out at me 🙂 I posted before saying I had emailed Maricela, and they moved it back to 12/18. To all my fellow hopefuls freaking out out there...STAY SANE !!!

Yeah figured I'd just do it today considering it has no essay. So it wasn't a significant time investment that I'd be taking away from other schools anyway. And $50 isn't terrible

Here's to constantly checking our emails for the next 2 weeks haha

Are there any interview spots before Jan 19th? Sorry, I can't check without cancelling my current appointment which is Jan 19th.

Thank you

Don't know if this will help, I interviewed 11/3 and found out via email first that I was accepted on 11/16. I got my stuff in the mail about a week later (I'm only about 4 hours away from them). So if you are accepted, you should hear via email first. Also NSU has a very high interviewee to accepted percentage 🙂.

Emailed them today to find out the status for Nov 5th interviews and they said that no decision has been made it. Might not be until the end of the month until we find out!

Does anyone know the following:
A. How many acceptances were given out?
B. How many deposits were made?

I know that they are only giving out roughly 250 acceptances to fill the number of seats they have and will pull from the waitlist accordingly, but haven't seen any stats for the actual number of acceptances handed out yet!

P.S. GOOD LUCK TO THOSE WAITING TO HERE BACK 😀

So I was complete here early December and I was wondering if I stand any chance this late in the cycle? Colorado Resident, 3.59cGPA, 3.35sGPA, 504 MCAT (27.5 on old scale)

I've been complete since mid-October with similar stats (3.53 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA, 29 MCAT, great ECs) and was told to keep waiting when I called them a few weeks ago..

I've been complete since 9/3 🙁 Think I might give them a call this Friday..

Speaking with a former alumnus of Nova, she told me that they are notorious along with other DO schools for dragging out the application process. Just be patient it takes a while to get through literally 1000s of applications 🙂

II today having been complete on 10/28! Flying out of the midwest in winter will be fantastic in more ways than one.
Congrats! Do you mind sharing your stats? Are u IS or OOS? Thanks in advance
