Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What's the weather like in FL? I'm from the Northwest so I'm worried it might be too hot and humid to concentrate on studying.

Weather is mostly sunny and warm year-round. Humidity can be bad at times but if you study indoors then you'll be fine.

May I ask you a question? I tried to send an email to their admission office to ask a question but my email was returned. I sent to their email address list on CIB book, [email protected].

It looks like the only way to contact them is to go to this website and fill in the form. http://www.nova.edu/contactus/index.html then submit.

Do you know any email address which can reach to admission office directly? So far, I think this is the only DO school which does not have a direct email address or phone number to its admission office.

Honestly the app cycle was so long ago for me that I have no idea. I do remember it being kind of a pain to contact Nova admissions though. I recommend going through the 2014-2015 NSUCOM thread, especially the beginning and end. I'm sure I saw some applicants posting a phone number or email that you can use to contact admissions.

You can open the secondary after submitting the primary. They allow everyone to fill out secondaries and do not screen. I believe there was a link either emailed to me or on the website when I did it. It's very simple, and probably the fastest one you'll do.
Hey, thanks for doing this-really appreciate it!

I am a bit confused though, so do we wait for a secondary invite via email or if our app has already been verified we can go find a link to submit a secondary (if it exists) and just complete it. I was verified a while back, even though aacomas isn't on the ball this year, and just wondering if I can go ahead and do the secondary here if its available to everyone (similar to TCOM's secondary).

Well this is whats written on their website:

"Upon receipt of the AACOMAS application, NSU-COM will forward an online secondary application to the applicant. The applicant should submit the following materials to Nova Southeastern University"

So I am assuming they send you the secondary application... By the way when did you submit your application? Because mine hasnt been verified yet.

Does this mean you received the secondary already? I was verified about mid-May and have heard nothing from any of the schools even though they supposedly began receiving apps this week...

So heres the thing: when i applied, I was verified October 22 or 23 and received the email regarding the secondary on October 23, 2014. That being said, this is the link to their secondary site where you can create an account and begin the application. I don't know if it will allow you to submit because it is so early, but you can at least start it. I would check with admissions first before submitting just to be safe.

I submitted my application on May 20th, transcripts received the 28th, and verified June 8. I know people are getting verified in about 1.5-2weeks time currently.

I heard NSUCOM has a special track that allows podiatrist to enter as a 2nd yr DO student. Does anyone have info or friends that are in this special track program? How do they complete the OMM requirement if they enter as a 2nd yr? Have they successfully matched? Any info would be greatly appreciated

It is my understanding that you have to complete your DPM degree (4yrs) and then apply to the program, in which you will come in as a 2nd yr. You complete the DO degree in 3yrs and do a 1yr internship in Osteopathic Medicine to "obtain a full medical license to provide added value to podiatric practice".

In a nutshell, spend 7yrs in school + 1yr internship doing OMM + 3yr pod residency = waste of money. If you're going to practice as a DPM (which is what this program would set you up for), most of which is a surgical speciality and/or outpatient procedures of minimal involvement on the foot and ankle...why on earth would you want to spend all those extra years/money to get two more initials and the ability to adjust peoples backs when you could've easily just spent that time further specializing in podiatry via a fellowship and do much better for yourself both "practice-wise" and financially. Just my two cents.

I submitted mine on the 9th so I am hoping I get the verification soon :scared:

Hey all, I'm applying to nova this cycle. Does anyone know if I took my mcat April 2013, will that be an accepted score?

I called admissions and I heard conflicting messages. Their website said it won't but the people I talked to said it would.

So how does nova's secondary work? Once we submit and are verified do we go to some website to complete the secondary or are we supposed to get an email from them inviting us to complete it?

Has anyone gotten an e-mail to complete the secondary yet? My AACOMAS was verified approximately 3 weeks ago, and have yet to hear from either of the DO programs I'm applying to.

Was your Mcat verified yet?

Hmmm maybe not I've sent it through twice, but I never got an e-mail to verify it was received. Is there any place on the AACOMAS application to check whether it's been verified?

Go to the PDF- see if it says unofficial scores or official scores

Wow your suspicion is on point - my score is unofficial. Not sure why if I've sent it twice, but I suppose I'll contact AAMC and find out. Thank you!

haha np, I think AACOMAS is having troubles and supposedly they'll be updated by the end of June? Let me know what they say!

I just spoke to AACOMAS and they said no MCAT scores have been uploaded yet. They'll be doing that in the next 2-3 days. I also spoke to NOVA and they have no record of my AACOMAS whatsoever even though it's been verified and submitted. Weird stuff.

I was just verified an hour ago and my official MCAT score is on the pdf version of my applications... not sure why, but maybe they had less trouble with mine because I submitted later?

Did you submit your app to be verified THEN send your MCAT scores, or vice versa ?

On the secondary where it says "How did you learn about osteopathic medicine?" Should this be answered as a simple sentence or should this answer be more in depth?

More in depth. More you disclose about your interest in osteopathic profession, the better.

Ok thanks for the help! I addressed this on my personal statement as well, so I'll try my best not to repeat exactly what was said. What length do you think is appropriate? I have about a paragraph currently (about 900 characters).

when I called them they said they would send us emails regarding the secondary and told us not to sign online for it

I was verified on 6/17 but AACOMAS was having issues displaying the PDF, which wasn't fixed until the evening of 6/18. I've sent in my LORs and my official MCAT scores are uploaded as well. I've already received secondaries from OUHCOM and MUCOM, although these are the only two out of the ten I applied too, and NOVA is up there on my list. How long before I receive a secondary invite from NOVA? Do they screen?

Has anybody had any luck or experience getting them to waive the third non-science letter of rec? I have three science letters but none from non-sci profs....

I plan on calling them Friday when I'm finally not at work or busy.

I spoke with someone in admissions (I don't recall the name), but was told I could use a LOR from my current manager at work. Granted I have been out of school for almost 2 years. I believe you still need to let admissions know though so they make a note on your app.

please let me know how this goes. I am still in need of a non-science letter. My writer promised to write me one but is extremely busy teaching in Europe. I hope they will let me get away with having a research letter instead.

Awesome, gives me hope I might still be able to apply with my current LORs.

I'll prob call Friday morning and update.

Secondary my sister lives in ft lauderdale so I would love to go here!!!

On their website, it says that they do not consider January MCAT scores. Are they talking about the new MCAT? Because my best mcat score came from January of this year.

Secondary, no essays??? Neat

I see a few questions on mine...

Does anyone know if there is a character or word limit on these?

EDIT***** I just tried to move on after answering the questions and it didn't let me due to character count. It has to be 2000 characters or less.

I think they mean January 2016 mcat scores.
