Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would say talk about it in person. They will ask you something along the lines of "is there anything you would like to add to your file since you submitted?". That is the right place to say it imo. That way you have a hidden card that you can use

Yes - good suggestion. Thanks for your insight!

@Johnyellow make sure to mention it in the interview but also call and update. I did that with my new MCAT score before I interviewed. Nothing to lose by doing that. Think it helped me in fact since the interviewers use your file to ask questions before you even walk in the room. Also there were 2 kids from my class accepted during orientation week if that helps anyone's nerves.

Did anyone find the cost of attendance or student budget page? Cant seem to find it.

Also, students who are on 100% loans at NOVA. How is your experience. Is there enough money to live off of? For the first year, how long do you have to look out for yourself until the loan refunds come back?

@meddie1991 tuition itself is around 57k, depending if they raise or not and if you're a Florida resident. And yes there is enough to live off of if you take out direct plus and Stafford loans. And usually just a couple of weeks before they disperse refunds and funds in general. Hope this helps.

I called to see if there were any other interview dates because I had to reschedule my date.
I was informed that all spots are currently full.
Over 12,000 applications were recieved this year but only a bit over 600 interviews were given.

When I applied 2 years ago and there was only about 8000 applications submitted and over 1200 interviews given then.
Seems like they changed the way they are doing things here.

Is anyone else interested in the DO/DMD program offered here? I have a few questions about it and was hoping someone could help me answer them Upon completing the dual degree program, what medical residencies are you eligible to apply for? Are you able to apply to dental residencies after the program or is the purpose of this program to graduate primary care physicians who also have a degree in general dentistry ONLY? Thanks for the help.

A bit over 600? They told us around 370....

Have they given out any II's for those complete in early November and beyond?

They said 600 or so will be interviewed this year.
So that was kind of ambiguous lolllll

But even then that's objectively like a 30% accept rate that's pretty frigging good.

If you look at a school like lecom that interviews like 2000 people for 170 spots it really puts novas selectivity into perspective

Nova is very selective. So if you get an interview it reflects well on you so try to make the most of it.

I asked zafonte86 earlier but I just wanted to get an estimate: when do they generally start pulling people out of the wait list ?

Based on this and your earlier post regarding booked interviews, did they let you reschedule? Any possibility for any more IIs to be given out?

Well I interviewed two years ago in the last week of march.
And this year is delayed by a who month
So I'm pretty sure they are gonna be still handing out interviews into April this year
Just very selectively I assume

Okay cool thanks

For interview invites, where you guys contacted by email or do you need to keep checking the portal?

Hey guys I have an upcoming interview in January ... For people that have interviewed already where did you stay?
If you can think of any other advice to give me that would be awesome thanks!

Holiday Inn in Davie was a good place to stay. They have free shuttle service for airport and school.

Hampton inn in plantation is a good place with a good price per night. It too has shuttle service to and from the airport and school. I remember it being about 25 minutes away from the airport and 5 minutes away from the school. Happy new years and have fun in your interview!

Thanks guys for ur quick replies!
Do you guys remember how much you paid for ur hotel night?
I was looking at holiday inn but it's at $179 right now that seems a little pricey and I'm not sure if I'm still paying holiday season prices thanks!

I paid around 132 per night. (Taxes included; Flew in Wednesday, checked out Friday morning) You have to call and ask for the discount rate by mentioning nova southeastern. Prices vary by season so hopefully it is cheaper for you!

Also, does anyone know if the OSHA anatomy lab ossues have been resolved? Will those issues affect incoming 2016 class?

And all those documents thats are required are due by the first deposit right? Not before?

@meddie1991 the anatomy lab was just finished. We start anatomy next week. If you use rolling hills (would advise you to find another place though) it's 5,890 per semester for fall and winter semester.

By finished, do you mean it was renovated? Or was there a new lab built?

I understand the OSHA issues related to formaldehyde esposure issues

Yeah but apparently a lot of schools have this issue. I got into NYIT last year and visited their school twice and each time the smell was strong as could be. It was redone not rebuilt. Apparently it's much better now but I'll see next week.

Just curious, why do you advise against Rolling Hills? I thought for a 1 bedroom apartment that's the least expensive option, especially since it includes utilities and is furnished.

It is OK, but there are places near by, even walking distance from HPD that you can get for the same price or slightly less. IE: Signature, Centro etc.

Was there anyone who interviewed here who was rejected? Curious to see if everyone not accepted was put on the alternate list...

When did they tell you 370?????
Was this recently???

That's what they told me as well. I had my interview back in Oct. They said they had received over 9K applicants and are giving out interview to roughly 350-370 for the 250 seats.

Anybody have an idea of how many interviews have been given out so far?

@yellowbluegreen August first each year. And a week before. I'm from NY and it took a minute to get used to the area and set up too. Running around the first week with everything else going on is a bit much imho.

II today. Way excited. Can any current students or accepted students discuss why they chose NOVA? Any insight would be great! I look forward to attending the interview and seeing what the school is all about!! Looks like a beautiful setting which is for sure a plus, and match list also looks very good!

Congrats! When were you complete?

@Knickstape21 I was wondering if you could comment on the housing. I'm looking to live by myself. Would you suggest living on the campus or apartments near NSU? any particular places that you think are better than others?

Thanks for all your help!

Withdrew my acceptance from here. I loved the school, loved the location, but unfortunately I couldn't justify the cost being over 2 times more than the school I accepted a seat at. Good luck to everyone and I hope my seat goes to someone who is dying to get in here!

can anyone who was recently accepted here dm me and throw me some pointers on school specific stuff you talked about during your interview when they asked you "why nova" got my interview coming up in late feb and I wanna be really prepared for it since its so late haha

I was never asked "why Nova" surprisingly. I cannot say they ommitted this question from all interviewees so I would still prepare an answer for that. This is a personal answer as well and you can find everything you need to know about the school on their website. The best way to prepare IMO is to know your own app very well. Be able to know all of your experiences like the back of your hand, expand upon them in your interview, and relate them to how they got you to this point and how these experiences have convinced you that you absolutely need to be a doctor. I was asked questions about my app, and the last thing you want to do is forget or seem unprepared about something you wrote.
