NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have my interview Oct 24. I will be getting there Oct. 23 in the afternoon. Is there anything exciting to do there (I have never been to FL). Who else has an interview on 24th?!

There is no shortage of activities in south florida. Having the money to do a lot of it is another story. It is one of the top destinations for european tourists, so if you are dead set on exploring then you'll have plenty of things to check out. I'd probably just want to mellow out on the beach and go to one of the chill bars around there....and go sailing but if you don't sail then I don't recommend starting now. 😉

Had the interview today. I interviewed last cycle in february but somehow today I saw so much more on the tour and everything. I guess when you interview earlier things are much different. It was a 3 on 1 interview as opposed to 2 on 1, and this time the people interviewing me made it clear that they liked me. Hopefully it translates into an acceptance. 😀

I am curious to know how they made it clear that they like you? When I interviewed I guess I was too nervous to tell whether or not they liked me.

With my interview, I asked possibly the best question one could ask with my interviewers. I was curious about the medical informatics deal and asked about that. It turned out that one interviewer ran the program and the other was very active with it. We sat there and talked problems implementing technologies in medicine for another 15 minutes or so. While waiting for the others to finish, my interviewer came out for someone else and waved at me with a big smile. Normally I get a courtesy nod and smile but this was shooting good vibes all over the place.

I have to say, it was probably my most enjoyable interview..and it was my first one.

Thank you. I will post on there after the interview. How much does this school care about numbers? I am comfortable with my numbers, but my MCAT certainly could have been better!! I have a great amount of clinical experience and community service activities as well as great LOR. Or is the decision going to come down to how I perform on the interview? Also, I am applying to both MD/DO schools though I like DO better, how much is that going to kill my chances?

I'm going to post the interview feedback tommorrow. I have the questions written down in the nice portfolio thing they gave us and I'll get all the notes I wrote 10 min post interview and post it.

I like how I'm in the screenshot by the way.

For all of you who have already interviewed, I'm prepping for mine and I was hoping for some insight. I'm just wondering what they give you at the interview? a portfolio was mentioned. What's in the portfolio? Anything else? (I'm sure this is covered in one of the many pages of posts, but I just don't have the patience to go through them...)

Stipid questions, I know... just humor me. 😎
Thanks!!!

It is pretty much the same thing as every other school. If it is your first interview, then it'll seem kind of exciting. Just a paper with curriculum stuff, financial aid stuff, the DMD/DO program...crap like that. Nothing special. They give you a portfolio thing with a pad of paper in it...but if you don't have a pen you're out of luck anyway. The interview is pretty standard. It was open folder with me, but they really didn't seem to use it too much. Mine was very conversational and filled with standard questions. Nothing to really worry about. Any interview that gives you cookies and lemonade DURING it can't be too scary.

What is the median MCAT total for NOVA anyhow?
usnews says:

GPA
2007 Average undergraduate GPA 3.48
MCAT
2007 Average MCAT score 8.3
2007 Average biological MCAT score 8.6
2007 Average physical sciences MCAT score 8.2
2007 Average verbal reasoning MCAT score 8.3
2007 Average writing MCAT score M

Thank you! That is a relief... I am well above all the averages! I just need to practice for my interview now

If you are invited for an interview then you have already gotten past the mcat hurdle and there is no reason to worry about it for that particular interview. That being said, many of the DO schools don't weigh the mcat score as much as either. If you are offered an interview then the only thing you should worry about score wise is if it was below normal and they ask a question...One just needs a reason or explanation. They usually do that just to see how you react.

I know they are going to kill me because I am applying to both MD/DO schools. I like DO better, but it will be much cheaper if I go to Maryland. I have been sweating that decision out for over a month now... my pre-med adviser told me not to retake the MCAT with a 30R.. maybe I should have ignored her

Thanks so much, MossPoh!! 👍

I know they are going to kill me because I am applying to both MD/DO schools.

Nova didn't mind that I applied to 34 MD schools. And yes, I included my whole AMCAS app in my Nova secondary.

Stop worrying about silly things. It's been one thing after another with you! Just get a great suit, read the health section of the NYT/WSJ every day, catch up on healthcare business and ethics, and be ready to shine. Get professional adults, your parents' age, to mock interview you - don't trust your friends to give you useful feedback.

Relaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Ya I included the full list of 45 schools DO/MD that I applied to in Nova's secondary, and they still sent me an interview invite!

I hope you feel less punked on the other side. I should have just applied DO and to my state MD school. 20-20 hindsight.

Edit: ...because I applied to 45 DO/MD too...

hi all,
i just interviewed last friday. i was really impressed w/the campus and the general program. this is after like months of stalking them and trying to schedule an interview. i walked away very impressed and thinking it was my first choice at this point.

later that day, i spoke to an md who works in florida. he told me how horrible nsu was, how embarassed he was for the m3s and m4s who rotate in his hospital and how well known it was that nsu produces very poor doctors.

i was horrified since a. i loved it there and b. i had never heard this before.
any feedback? was this just a random nova hater, or is it truly well known that nsu has poor quality education?

also, where can i find a residency match list from previous years? (the website confuses me....)

thanks!

Your sample size = 1, so don't panic. There's no way to know if he just hates DOs in general, or if he is going on hearsay, or if his priorities were out of sync with what the students/residents were required to do that day/week, or if his hospital hosts preceptorships vs. rotations vs. residencies, or how old his info is, or if he just needs to get laid. If you look at the match lists (see below) it's pretty clear that Nova produces plenty of impressive grads. If he's not a residency program director, he doesn't really get to vote on whether you're going to be successful. Personally, my "what do Florida doctors think about Nova" sample size is about 5, mixed DO/MD, and I got 5 positives. Neither sample is statistically significant.

The only way out of this doubt is to do as much research as you can, and decide how much faith you have in the system. Which means reading every SDN post in the osteo forum and elsewhere about Nova (look for bravotwozero in particular). And/or look at hospital websites (in and out of Florida) for their physician lists, to see what DOs from what schools work where (I do this obsessively now). You could also try to contact Nova grads (such as the vascular surgeon at USF, or the orthopedic surgeon at Jackson) to see if they can share any inside info.

I've been doing all this research from 3000 miles away, without the benefit of any inside info - I don't know a soul in Florida except MS1s. You can do it too.

Regardless, in general, if you don't want to do primary care, you should be getting up to speed on how to compete, and where the speedbumps are. Such as: what does it take to get a competitive AOA residency, or to get an ACGME residency as a DO, and what freedom do you get in 4th year to do audition rotations.

Nova's match lists are here: http://medicine.nova.edu/academics/clinical/index.html#grad_placement

PM me if you want to discuss further.

Wow. That's crazy! All I keep hearing from people that have worked in the hospitals around here are how impressed they are with the M3's and 4's that rotate with them (at Jackson in particular).

Nova may come across as disorganized in the application process and I might piss and moan all day about how we had an anatomy exam with the back, upper AND lower limb on it (OMG) or how by the end of the first physiology test, I couldn't even remember my name...but dang, I'm getting a fantastic education. Beyond that, (and I wasn't sure how I felt about this at first, but now I'm REALLY glad for it) we're starting our clinical education from day 1. I can't IMAGINE what it'd be like to be an M3 and just get thrown into patient interaction.

I think like anything, medical education is what you make of it, and there will be awful doctors from every institution. Be it because they don't know how to deal with patients or they don't know a whole heck of a lot...I've heard good things about NSU grads, but it sounds like this doctor you talked to had a run in with one that wasn't particularly stellar.

To negate that sample size. My dad is an MD and has had a few parters that were nova grads. He was so impressed by them that I really wasn't given the option, I was GOING to apply to nsu. His old partner was also head of a residency program down in South Florida, and he seemed to like them too.

nova is a power house. you name a hospital in south florida and i'm sure a nsu alum is there and is very good at what they do. Cleveland clinic, broward general, memorial hospitlas.....all with good trauma centers and all are large hospitals. probably just a random nova hater....florida is amazing...everyone wants to come here!

You are way too excited man. 😉

Congrats on your acceptance into Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine! Your records have been reviewed and you will be receiving an official acceptance letter by certified mail in about a week...

-------5 minutes later-------

An acceptance email was sent to you in error. The status of your file is still under review...

-___-# Unbelievable.

Wow, that is inexcusable!!! So sorry, nothing like a roller coaster of emotions.

Reason #431 I decided to withdraw my application from Nova!

I got a weird thing saying my loan was dispersed once. Keep in mind I don't go to school there. I think they have some wacky systems. I never even got an email saying congrats for an acceptance...

Congrats on accumulating your medical school debt so early.

When did you interview at Nova?

If i get a call this week from Nova about a decision I'll probably call back once a week until class starts next year just to make sure it's correct.

i submitted my Nova secondary about a month ago and i have still not heard anything. my gpa and mcat are kind of lower, but i have tons of volunteer hours, lots of research experience, and have been shadowing and working with physicians for nearly three years. i also have a experiences abroad in working at hospitals.

just recently i mailed out an additional letter stating my level of interest and a few updates since the submission of my application. i try calling the school literally every day and can never get through to someone to see if my file is complete.

do i seem like a somewhat competitive candidate? and also, do i need to do anything more to ensure hearing about an interview???

All of that stuff is really vague to know whether you are competitive or not. People need a little patience with this stuff though. They really at the thick of it now. You'll usually get email notifications when they receive things. Don't just call and hangup either, leave a voicemail with your name and number. Pretty soon they'll have to go through 5 of your voicemails and WILL call you back.

If you don't mind, what did they ask you?

Tell us about yourself? Why DO? Why Osteopathic Medicine? What do you think about private vs. public medicine? How do you relax? How do you handle stress?

They also asked questions specifically about my personal statement. They didn't ask any questions about my MCAT or GPA. Overall, they were trying to keep it conversational. They just wanted to know more about ME.

Oh Wow! I interviewed on October 10th too. I was the one from Virginia. All this waiting is making me go crazy. That was horrible what Nova did with that email.

Hi! I'm the one from Michigan. ...I guess we'll know their decision in the next couple of days. Good luck! ^_^

Does anyone have any information on the "new" curriculum NSU is suppose to be implementing next fall? They were talking about how they would be moving away from the lectures, having more independent learning, and doing a two week integration and the end of each topic? It made sense when I was there and they were explaining, it but now that I'm thinking about it I guess I would like to know more.

OK so somehow, I broke SDN this morning.

If any of you are interviewing tomorrow, some of my fellow M1's and I are getting together for dinner later (pizza...nothing fancy) and would like to invite any of you pre-meds/interviewees to join.

You can shoot me an e-mail at singinfifi at gmail dot com if you'd like to come. If you're without a car, no worries. We'll take care of it 🙂
