NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You are allowed to miss up to 30% of your classes for whatever reason you want. In my honest opinion, swiping in and leaving is dishonest. Swiping in for someone else is even worse. Would you do the same if you were on rounds? I would certainly hope not. The rules are relaxed at the moment.

There will be professors who take such actions are being disrespectful (swiping in and leaving, not being in dress code, or poor attendance) and will 'punish' the class by submitting more difficult test questions. Just the heads up.

Eh. It goes back to a forced dishonesty. If there weren't rules against it, then I wouldn't have ever been told about cheating the system by students. I have no intention of missing that many classes. They are useless for me, but I always feel guilty missing. Rotations versus lecture aren't really the same to me. Aside from the fact that swiping in your buddy can effectively leave you with more work, it is where you get the bulk of your learning done anyway. Lectures just depend on the person. I never said I would do it either. I can barely keep track of my own crap let alone someone else, but I do see a difference in someone that is quietly studying the same material in another room on campus and a person that is doing it just for the sake of skipping.

p.s. I think I'm just playing devil's advocate now. 😉

Great, thanks for the advice 🙂

I'd love to end up going to school in Florida... Does anyone know if either LECOM-B or NOVA has a better reputation over the other??

your going to get biased answers since your posting in the NSU forum...but since your asking...I figure NSU will have the best reputation since I'll be going there.

jk🙂

Whats happening all,

Interviewing 12/19!...wonder if thats the last interview for the year? My question to all is does anyone have a more recent match list available. I used to live in Ft Lauderdale and love Nova but havent found much post-graduation information.

Any help would be sweet

IamAriDO

The matchlist is difficult to gauge because of all the people that simply have their intern year put down. I really wish they had pgy-1 and pgy-2 on there.

I would think the punishment in itself would deter students from doing so. From conversations with administration, it may be further enforced. Also, you did sign your J.H. on that contract. Your signature today is going to be worth the same when you're writing your prescriptions.

I do agree, however, rules breed dishonesty. If you're able to deal with the ramifications of it, then my hands are tied.

You make it sound like match lists are for sale in Publix or something.

Here you go.

Just poor grammar on my part.....(smacks self)......

mmmm...publix....nothing here in Toledo even compares

Thank you!

I agree, but all the DO match lists are that way. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=574257

It would be nice to have a general understanding of why lots of folks (looks like about a fifth to a quarter of each DO school) go with a TR. To get 5-state approval prior to an ACGME residency? To stall for time in picking a specialty? Is it just what you do for some subset of AOA residencies that don't have integrated internship?

check you status page, i interviewed on 10/31 and the decision was posted.

So, are these guys pretty quick with their decisions? I am trying to decide between Nov. 25th and Dec. 5th. Some thing tells me the sooner I interview, the better off I am. However it may be harder to get a good plane ticket around thxgiving.

The sooner the better. Who gives a damn about plane fare.

Or so you think. 😉 I haven't really signed anything yet! I'm probably going to end up in a field where I don't really write prescriptions. Besides the fact that it'll probably be a digital sign-off by the time I'm practicing!

I don't think any good can come from putting MORE rules and punishments in place to enforce the old ones. Once again, I don't plan on it, but who am I to judge the person that doesn't attend class and rocks every exam? It works for them. I guess I've always believed that the school should do whatever it takes for the student to facilitate learning in the best way for that student rather than placing them in a mold that works for some and not others. I also expect that tuition would be about 4 times the cost if they did that.

Yeah it should be on your status page by now. I also interviewed 10/31 and Sarah told me today that my acceptance packet is in the mail... so yours should be too

the person paying for the ticket cares. I would say it wont make a difference.. so i'd choose the cheaper fare.. that's what i did.

That's what you did? Oh, in that case...

You were offered Nov 25th? I was told they weren't interviewing Thanksgiving week. But that week, I'd think the flights are pretty expensive. I choose against the Monday after because the Sunday flight after Thanksgiving was twice the price.

I was offered Nov. 18th, 20th and 25th. I can't go on 18th/20th. Got tests at school. I checked the flight prices for before thx giving and they weren't too bad so, I took the 25th. I care about tickets because my husband is going too.

I'm pretty sure that you signed a form during orientation that proves that you will adhere to professionalism (ie dress code and attendance). It was informed consent. You're able to sit in class in your scrubs and read with your ipod on. It's your prerogative. I, for one, do not want to be held responsible for a test being more difficult because of certain choices that upset professors/administrators.

As to your comment about additional rules. There will not be further rules put upon the students. The current rules will just be more stringently enforced. I am only speaking for myself and by experience since I've been here for about a year and a half.

Does anyone know if NSU has a dress code? Also, how do you check your status online?

Scroll back through this thread and you'll find out more answers to your questions then you ever wanted.

I seriously didn't sign anything. I don't know if it was left out of my packet or I was in the bathroom or what. Unless by orientation you mean when you start, which I haven't done yet since I still don't know if I'll end up there. Although, I'm sure they'll get my thousand dollars either way. 😉

I am really just being difficult for the sake of being difficult I think. I've always liked offering an opposing view, regardless of whether I believe it or not.

I also like to confuse homophones.

My DO letter still has not been sent. Should be sent this week. Does anyone know if this is kind of late in the cycle, since they won't even review apps until the letter is received?? Also, I listed a TON of both MD and DO schools in the secondary app, since they asked for all schools to which I applied. Do you know if they hold this against you? Thanks.

Homophones wil make life interesting in med school. Nothing to worry about.

I listed all ~45 schools I applied to, and I did not shadow a DO, so didn't have a DO letter. I got accepted..or so says my status page.

Ohhhhhh wow for some reason I thought I read somewhere that they require a letter from a DO. I must have been thinking of a different school. So you listed all 45 schools?!? And they didn't hold that against you... It is odd that they even ask that.

I've been checking my status page every day and under "decision" it always says "pending." However, when I checked at 12:30 last night, the decision said, "contact admissions office." I emailed them because it was technically 12:30 on Saturday morning so no one would be there if I called lol... Does anyone know what this might mean? Does this just mean they might be missing something?? Thanks in advance.

They said something in the interview like 'wow you applied to a lot of schools, why would you choose nova over all these others'. I did submit an MD letter, they might just require a letter from a physician. I don't remember their stated requirements. I think my status was 'please contact admissions office' once I was offered an interview and until they made my post-interview decision. I don't know if that status always means interview or what..

Oh really??? I reeeeally hope that's the case... That would be ideal!!!

Does anyone have information on public transportation across Florida (between Bradenton to Ft Lauderdale); either buses or trains?

I inteviewed 11/11 (thought it went well) and my status says please contact the admissions office. Do we think this is a good thing or a bad thing? Anyone else have this message? How did it result? Tried calling many times, nobody picks up their phones.

Not sure... mine said that before even going for an interview. My file was complete a month ago and status said "pending" but now it says to contact admissions, so maybe that means interview?? No idea... Very odd...

Resulted in acceptance for me. I don't think it means anything other than an offical decision hasn't been made on your file yet.

has anyone received their acceptance packet yet? For those of you who have, what was the time frame? I'm really trying to be patient...but it's so hard!! 😳

Ya, interviewed 10/24, status changed on website on 11/10, received my packet today 11/15 vis usps certified mail. The mail stamp says they mailed it out 11/13. I live in FL just for mail time reference.

I interviewed on 09/25, got an email on 10/20 saying I was accepted and got the packet the following Friday.

Wish I remembered my log-in information!!! Guess I am going to have to wait for the email or snail mail to reveal my fate...

NSU is not a party-school, is it? I don't want to go to a party school.

Congrats! You're also excepted to FIU, right? I just got an invite there. What did you think of that school?

for those of you checking "status'' where are you looking?

When I go to webstar all it gives me is the ability to look at my submitted secondary....thoughts?

I'm still waiting on FIU's decision, it seemed like a nice place. Being the 1st class at any school is a little worrying/exciting. They are planning on building a bunch of med school related stuff, but I don't think it will be done until after we are in clerkships or graduated. Congrats on your invite.

I'm pretty sure this has already been answered in this thread, but here we go, starting from the page titled 'COM Applicant Information' click NSU-COM Application' then click 'Admissions' login with your username/password then there is a section titled 'Processed Applications' I have two things listed both titled 'Fall 2009', if i click on the 2nd one it brings me to a page with some info, one of the fields on that page is 'Decision:'

Huh? That is kind of random. The party school status is affiliated with undergrad. You probably won't see undergrads unless you are in the gym or something. NSU is a pretty big commuter school.

But being a party school doesn't really mean much. UF, USF, and Miami all have their fair share of partying and their med schools aren't too shabby. Any large state school is usually considered a party school as well. There are always different places that grad students tend to live that undergrads don't.

Thanks, now that I made a decision to go for an interview, I am getting paranoid.

Does anyone know where I can find a match list for this school?? I'm sure it's been asked before, but when I did a search, I only found the 2002 match list.
