NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Another question... Since I'm from NY, I'm not very familiar with the hospitals in Florida. Could anyone tell me anything about the core rotation sites for NSU? How are the hospitals' reputations?? Thanks!

If ADCOM had their meeting yesterday, when will the acceptancE decision show up on webstar? Also, do you guys think the office would stay as late as Dec 22 to give us a decision? This wait is worse that the 1 month wait for the MCAT😕

I found out on friday. I would imagine they are going for holidays so they will try to get the decisions out before they leave. I don't think you have to wait much longer!

so quick question for everyone

where exactly do you go in the morning for the interview? Terry Building?

8.45am right?

Thanksall...not that I am paranoid or anything 🙂

Massively excited..

You go to the admissions office in the terry building. They say 8:45, but when I interviewed i didn't know what traffic would be like so I git there super early (8:15) and there was 8-10 people there already.

Does anyone know what the next step is after sending in your deposit and transcripts?

you know i have the same exact question? i just wanna be sure everything is in order!

p.s. i still have not gotten my holiday card...mannnn 😎

Hey around how long after notification of acceptance does the official letter and packet come?

Anybody who interviewed last Friday (12/12) hear anything yet?
i had replied to this earlier, but i think my post was deleted (weird?)...

anywho, i interviewed on the 12th as well...and I have yet to hear from them. I was hoping to hear back today (since those who interviewed on the 5th got acceptances on the 12th...) but...maybe our group was too huge for that? I'm not sure...oh well. Best of luck to everyone!!

It's different for every group I think. It depends on whether or not the committee is backed up or not. I interviewed on the 9th and my status changed on the 12th.

And I interviewed on the 9th and my status changed on the 15th lol it varies.

By the way, I just spent an hour shoveling my car out of snow... Nova, here I comeeeeee!!!!!!

I feel youuu!!!!! The entire time I was shoveling I was thinking about being in sunny Fla. I even started to hate NY a little bit. I can't wait for next august.

Gosh, I can't either!! My poor fiance loves the snow lol but he says the idea of seeing me in a bathing suit weekly, in the middle of the "winter," is more than worth it hahahah... I think he'll gladly make the sacrifice.

yep...I'll probably be breaking up with my girlfriend of 2 yrs for Nova...so they better learn me some good medicine...lol

My file and application has been complete since mid october, still haven't heard a peep. And just like you said earlier, my status still reads 'Decision pending' . 🙁

Haha I was just thinking the same thing. It is absolutely freezing in MI right now and we just got a lot of snow here too. They actually closed my University because of the weather. I am starting to get really excited 🙂 I get paid next week and then I am putting my deposit down for Nova, yay!

Ohh noooo that's sad. What happened? Is she not supportive of your moving and going to med school? I'm very lucky that my fiance is sooo supportive of me so it's unfortunate when it isn't always as such.

Hahahah yeyyy!!! I'm not putting down the deposit until I get the acceptance packet. How long do you think I have until I have to pay?? I'm thinking it should be 30 days.

She has her own life here in NY and we both know that the long distance thing won't work. It's ok perfectly mutual...and yes it is usually 30 days.

Yeah it will depend how long it takes for you to get your packet. They come with a specific date your money is due. Mine came within 10 days after acceptance so I had a little over 30 days. The longer the winter goes on, the more excited I get for Florida 🙂

Well that's good that you're okay with it and that it's mutual. I'd still think it would be really hard though after being together for two years.

Well some things are more important than others...what can I say.

what were your grades if you dont mind me asking?

So I interviewed recently. I'm trying to check my status online via webstar, but I don't have an NSU id. The PDF they sent me ages ago with my completed application was corrupted so I don't know my webstar ID. Any ideas?

-thanks

In order to complete your secondary, you had to create a webstar ID, so you probably just forgot it since you created it so long ago. Perhaps you saved the login info somewhere on your comp and you can do a search?

Call the NSU help desk 1-800-541-NOVA(6682) x24357. They are very helpful with webstar (even on saturdays).

I have to choose NOVA versus UNECOM by Dec. 28th.
When I went to my interview at NOVA, they mentioned some potential changes to the curriculum for next year...like taking out the histology course and integrating that into the general systems-based lectures. I'm wondering if anybody who goes there or who has interviewed recently has heard anything more concrete about changes?

So many people on this thread seem pretty excited about NOVA, but I feel like I got the short end of the stick on my interview day. One of my interviewers couldn't even speak English well enough to formulate or answer questions about the school...and the whole interview day seemed unusually disorganized due to the size of our group.

...I feel like I missed what everybody else enjoyed beyond the good weather, and it makes me nervous to let my deposit lapse.

Isn't UNECOM in Maine? Seems like a no-brainer to me...unless you like the smell of fish.

I'm sorry you had such a bad interview day. I will see if I can find you someone to get into contact with that can help you out. I haven't heard anything concrete about these changes thaty ou speak of. they'd mentioned going to a "systems based" cirriculum for us (I'm class of 2012),but we (as far as I can tell anyway) are still getting our systems classes 2nd year.

I'll dig around for you and see what I can come up with. In the meantime, you should feel free to e-mail me at singinfifi at gmail dot com if you have any other questions 🙂

I am relocating with my fiancee, so I cannot take it so lightly as to pick based on weather...peace be with those who can. UNECOM and Southern Maine are beautiful in a completely different way. If I had my druthers right now I would put UNECOM in Ft. Lauderdale 🙁 Alas it cannot be done and I am stuck and need a push in one direction or the other.

I am concerned by the lack of clarity on the ambiguous hints of curriculum changes; lots of incoming classes suffer when they are the guinea pig class.

I don't know if I am willing to trade dissection for prosection in order to get good weather...do those at NOVA care that they are prosecting?

I don't recognize the names of so many of the places where the graduates get matches b/c I have only lived in California and the Northeast, so I really need help knowing if they are comparable to matches of UNECOM grads? I don't care where in the US I end up as long as I am happy.

I don't know what to make of not getting systems until 2nd year...is that common? I didn't really think about this until I had to make a decision. Is this good or bad or indifferent?

I wanted a more diverse environment and patient population; obviously NOVA way wins out there; maybe a current student can tell me how wonderful or not impactful that is?

I want to cry over the stress. I don't have $950 to waste.

I was only joking in my last post...obviously people take more things into consideration than just the weather when deciding on which med school to commit to. I personally chose Nova over the other ones I was accepted to because of the feeling of support I got when I was there. The dean actually sat down with us at the end of the day and spoke with us for about an hour and a half. He tried to get to know each one of us individually by asking us about our backgrounds and told us a lot about himself as well. He was VERY inspiring and was pretty much the deal maker for me. I don't know if anyone else who interviewed on the 9th felt the same way but I seriously have not seen that from any other school. Also, the curriculum is mostly lecture based but does also throw in a bit of PBL and other ways of learning. From what I gathered the student support system there is fantastic, which was also a big factor for me. You want to be able to speak to your professors and administrators if something comes up. It seemed like a very open door policy kind of school. The rotations are great and the area is very diverse. With all of that said I must add that those were not the main reasons for choosing that school. When I was there I felt like it could be home for me. I did not get that feeling anywhere else, so my advice to you is to just try and figure out which school you can picture yourself at. I think if you can see yourself being at one school over the other then that's the school for you.

Oh and by the way I think prosection is better because you don't have to deal with mistakes. You are still wrist deep in cadavre without the nuisance of trying to figure out if and why the specific artery or nerve is cut so short. Best of both worlds.

Agreed. I loved the dean's talk at the end and the admissions guy at the beginning was nice too. I have had that at every interview, but this dean was definitely the most inspiring. He almost made me cry and I was sitting right in front of him. (and distrubingly he reminds me of my own fiancee except older and shorter, but moustache included, hehe).

That left the contrast of my interviewers really confusing...and frankly the infomercial-like video at the beginning.

My interviews at NYCOM, KCUMB, KCOM are in a few weeks. Were their OMM facilities much different? Some rave about NOVA's facilites, but they didn't strike me as better than UNECOM's, just bigger...and the OMM facilities at UNECOM were newer with adjustable height tables. I didn't see any histology lab at UNECOM--the histology lab at NOVA looked nice, but that was the part they told me they were getting rid of and I can't confirm!

Well I haven't heard anything of the sort and honestly I don't see why they would. If you do get a definitive answer please let me know, since you have made me interested now too.

Hey I think you have to go with your instinct also. Up until now its been all about data, numbers and statistics....you have to know where you will feel supported and will enjoy (as much as possible) your med school experience. I have a fiance too to worry about and my second choice was LECOM in Erie. I did give Nova a harder look because of the better job situation there but, in the end, Nova just felt right. I don't know how much you need to worry about potential curriculum changes as Nova is not a new school. They have had a medical school for awhile, and that established status makes me feel confident that they will handle it well. In your description of your decision you did seem to lean to the school in Maine, yet something is making you re-look at Nova....why don't you dig deeper into what is making you second guess your UNECOM decision? Good luck, I know this is a big decision and I think it is always more comfortable for people like us to make decisions based on cold hard fact but, in the end, its all about finding a good fit.

Oh, and I loved the people who interviewed me and I know a lot of people felt the same way. That stinks that you had a bad experience....I take comfort that I will not be interacting with the admissions department too much while I am there. They can be a bit disorganized but the people I do interact with always seem very helpful once I get ahold of them, so I think it is a staffing shortage there. GOOD LUCK!!

I'll go and answer the whole prosection versus dissection thing. Most (nearly all) students I have met LOVE the fact they don't have to do full dissection once they get involved. It was a spot of debate for me as well and I still continue to read research that dissection is the best, albeit most time consuming way. That being said, the school offers the fellowship for the summer, so if you really want to get your dissection bug worked out then you can. The prosection route is probably better if you actually want to spend time studying for other classes and maybe even with your loved one rather than digging through a bunch of fat and playing where's waldo with a nerve you accidently cut.

UNECOM is an outstanding school, so I can understand your decision. I don't know what your spouse does, but the south florid area has a TON of potential jobs, educational experiences, etc. If your mood and personality is a little weather based like me, then weather is a big decision. I might be near suicidal during winters up there ....and that isn't an exaggeration. The smaller class size is a pro for UNECOM.

I also wouldn't worry about the curriculum stuff. Every school changes their curriculum. The truth is, we have no clue what way we like best until we actually do each different way. Whether it is the standard discrete subjects, system based, PBL, or some hybrid the same material will be covered and it probably won't make too much of a difference in the end. I know you are thinking "how could I NOT worry about the curriculum" but these schools have been at it long enough I have faith they probably know more about educating medical students than I do.

I'M INNNNNNNNNN!
I just woke up this morning and decided to check webstar. I cant believe it, I'm In.

Congratulations HALIVE!!! Glad to have another member of the class of 2013!

Hi all,

Got my interview invitation via e-mail last week and I will be there on Jan. 20th. Anyone else going to be there??

Good luck to all of you waiting to hear back and congrats to those who have been accepted.

Sorry for the double post but I have a question regarding webstar.

I just logged-in to check my status and I get a page with the checklist and "complete your application" and "save for later" buttons with no status. It says that the additional information section is incomplete. However, I know my application is complete because I have the pdf and got an interview. Is this just a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

HALIVE-you just heard back this AM, when did you interview?

Is there a trick to opening the .pdf summary of your secondary that they email you? I'm on a mac and have tried both acrobat reader and preview. Both tell me the file is unreadable.

Thanks for any help.

I use a PC and have never been able to open the PDF. It says that it is corrupted.
