Official 2012-2013 Help Me Rank Megathread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm interested in cardiology, GI, and heme/onc. I'm torn between Hopkins and UCSF.

Tier 1:
Johns Hopkins
UCSF

Tier 2:
3. U of Chicago (loved the people here)
4. Columbia
5. U of Washington
6. Northwestern

#firstworldproblems

UCSF for location. Hopkins for your grandma being proud. Flip a coin for other considerations.

I'm looking for some advice on the order of my rank list. Interested in cardiology and having a hard time deciding between my top two programs. Advice appreciated.

1. Utah
2. Wisconsin
3. Indiana
4. Iowa
5. Minnesota
6. CCF
7...and the rest

Thanks!

I'd swap Indy and UMinn and otherwise leave it alone.

East coast vs Best coast, then rank appropriately in terms of Hopkins vs UCSF and Columbia vs Washington.

Another long-time lurker, first-time poster. AMG interested in GI fellowship. Ideal program also has international elective. Bonus if location has nice areas to run.

Here is my preliminary rank list. I have been a lifetime resident of my state, interested in going somewhere new for 3 years, applied broadly to places where I felt like I could keep the door open for fellowship:

USC: Great location, warm, no built-in international elective but PD states can create one. Diverse and advanced pathology.
Minnesota: Not a fan of the cold but shocked myself by loving the program. It quickly jumped to the top of my list. Good GI fellowship match, I was impressed that all of the APDs were present, residents claim that Minneapolis is an active city year-round, top VA hospital nationally.
MCW: Clicked the best with the residents here. Milwaukee seems like a city that could be fun.
Utah: Residents are active. SLC seems like a liveable city.
Cincinnati: I thought the PD was great. One of the best noon conferences I had seen.
New Mexico: Also thought PD was great. However, lots of DOs and IMGs. PD claims that she chooses to have them to create diversity, but I found that difficult to believe.
Loma Linda: Mixed feelings about my interview day - got the sense the residents didn't rank the program highly. Regardless, great pathology and hands-on experience.

Hey everyone, first time poster,am a non US citizen IMG (need a visa), thought this might actually be useful so here it goes....
Please criticize my rank list based on objective measures (hard to do, but mainly based on strength of program in terms of academics, research and fellowship placement)...

1) Uconn
2) Henry Ford
3) SUNY upstate
4) UTMB -galveston
5) Albany
6) University at buffalo
7) Winthrop
8) Lenox Hill
9) East Carolina University (Brody school of med)
10) washington hospital center
11) maimonides
12) Norwalk
13) Allegheny (?heard they are financially unstable)
14) Metrohealth (case western affiliate) - rumored to have PD who considerably favors AMG..
15) NY hospital of queens

Interested in cards. rep>=loc, CA>>Midwest, SF Bay area>LA>SD
(Yes, I generously interpreted Sacramento as SF Bay Area.)

Current order:
UCDavis
Harbor-UCLA
Cedars-Sinai
SCVMC
Scripps Clinic/Green
UIC
Kaiser SF
Kaiser Oak
Kaiser SC
Rush U

Thanks

Yep, we're a cancer to any program. You better stay away!!!

I'm interested in gen med but open minded, and struggling with top 5-ish, also debating NY v. CT for top of list in terms of working with underserved and seeing a diverse range of things during residency.

1-3: Yale PC, Yale Cat, Cornell
4-7: MSSM PC/Cat, NYU PC/Cat
8. Monte PC/SM
9. Monte Cat
10. CHA
11. JHU-Bayview

thank you! just curious, why cornell over yale, why nyu over mssm, and why cat over pc? doesn't pc tailor their experience to generalists rather than subspecialists?

I also interviewed at USC. Though I loved LA, the program apparently has a horrible tract for fellowship placement.

For all fellowships? I can't find a list online on their site.

Hi all, i'm having a terrible time trying to decide how to rank these three on my list. Currently I have:

Cedars
USC
UC Davis

Would love to hear how everyone feels about the program strengths and matching for fellowship. I plan to do a fellowship, not sure in what. Thanks!

*BUMP* surely you'll have some opinions about these three programs :D

I would personally put UC Davis then Cedars then USC. Davis has an awesome program and PD.

how would you order Northwestern, Yale and Vandy for someone interested in cardiology?

The cards matchlist for NW and Vandy seemed stronger than Yales over the years, but I also dont want to compromise clinical training (NW is considered "cush"?)

hey guys! i dont post on here as much but i'd really appreciate any help, i'm from the east coast trying to go west and my advisors arent as familiar with these programs...

my current top 4 rank:

UC davis
UC irvine
UTSW
OHSU

( bottom few not quite figured out uchicago, umich, ucolorado)

ANY feedback would be very appreciated. i really like UC irvine but i'm worried it may close the fellowship door?

thank you in advance

When I was at UCI for interviews it seems they have a lot of in house fellows for everything...

You have to post the whole list because the glimpse you gave into the rest of it makes putting Davis and Irvine 1 and 2 completely insane.

Hi guys. Would like to ask for your help. Which of the 2 programs would you rank higher:

Rush University (Chicago, IL)
University of Connecticut

I am an IMG needing visa, interested in cardio or endo. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

the list currently

uc davis
uci
utsw
ohsu
uchi
umichigan
pitt
ucolorado

like i said, really want to be in ca... willing to give up those academic powerhouses

thank you everyone for your responses. still shifting the list around. considering OHSU as #1 as you mentioned...

Anyone know how SUNY upstate, Albany , and University at buffalo stack up against each other in terms of reputation, academics, research and fellowship opportunities.. I know they are all IMG frinedly, which I am (non US IMG).. but i dont know how i should rank them :/ . thank you , all help is appreciated!

I will never understand the desire to be in CA (and once you have to start paying income tax and your own malpractice, you may not either) but whatever. Remember that residency is just 3 years and if you want to do a fellowship a stronger program will be "better." But I get raking with location in mind...I did it myself (but didn't take the kind of hit that you will here).

Anyhoo...since you've already decided to rank Davis and Irvine 1 and 2 I'm going to ignore them and rank the rest. You're a big boy...you can make your own decisions there.
UChicago
Michigan
OHSU/Pitt/Colorado (flip a coin, or choose based on flight times to wherever you want to visit in CA)
UTSW (C'mon man...Texas? For realz?)

to be honest, i am really struggling with my decision right now. it is just 3 years, but getting a fellowship in Ca is easier when youre instate. and its not about location for me, it's my family. anyways, i apprecaite you ranking the rest for me, only think about UChi is heard is that they are having some problems securing down a chairman? and UMich gives me a stronger feel, if that makes sense. also resident assistants, i could get used to that.
and, i'm a girl.

Buffalo = Upstate
Albany

Thank you for the response, i appreciate it ....
How do you think i should rank that trio vs community programs in NY area (specifically lenox hill and winthrop )
I continue to hear university always always >> community, but it really does become a harder decision when u factor in location . would love to hear your thoughts , thank u in advance !

Totally agree with gutonc's impression for eras IM2013

At the end of the day, it's your rank list and you should rank 'em how you like 'em. Next year, the only person who really has to live with your decision is yourself and to a lesser extent, your SO/family. Good luck, I know it's hard to leave family behind and ultimately you should do what you think is best for yourself!

How do we choose community-based (university-affiliated) programs in general? This may not apply to the majority of people in this site. I am wondering if someone could give me some advice. Open minded for either hospitalist or fellowship. Thanks!!
My current potential ranking:
1. Baystate/tufts in Springfield MA
2. GBMC in Baltimore MD
3. Good Samaritan in Baltimore MD
4. Union memorial in Baltimore MD
5. Providence St Vincent in Portland Oregon
6. Legacy in Portland Oregon
7. Christ in Cincinnati Ohio
8. Good Samaritan in Cincinnati in Ohio
9. Jewish in Cincinnati in Ohio

Just choose based on how you liked the programs. I'm relatively familiar with 3 of them (Baystate, Prov and Legacy) and I know plenty of people from those places who have secured relatively non-competitive fellowships (ID, Renal, CCM, Endo). In the end, they all get jobs.

try telling that to your spouse

I think this advice only applies if by "family" you don't mean spouse and/or children. Uprooting your family, or "leaving them behind" is going to have a HUGE impact on all of you. It might still be the right decision, but don't downplay the effect it will have on the people around you.

Agreed, didn't mean to downplay the SO/kids factor. When I said "family", mainly meant parents/siblings, otherwise it definitely gets complicated when you start worrying about school systems and jobs for your SO (and whether or not they'd have a good social network at the new city).

please help! Interested in palliative care and academic medicine. Couples matching and my husband's program is 7 years, so wherever I go I will be for 7 years and location needs to have good enough fellowship opportunities.

Tufts: pros = being in boston for 7 years means access to great fellowship opps for palliative care. Cons = not as good an IM training program than others, nor as good a reputation.

Case: pros = good IM training, like program better than tufts. Cons: don't like cleveland better than boston. could do fellowship at case or CCF. But is case THAT much better than Tufts that it's worth not being in Boston for potential fellowship at mgh/dana farber?

Mayo: Similar issues to case- Pros= great IM training, liked program. Cons: rochester for 7 years! I don't like big cities, but I don't like the middle of nowhere either! Would having mayo residency and mayo fellowship ultimately open more doors than tufts residency and potential harvard fellowship?

UVA: Pros = good reputation. like charlottesvile. Cons = didn't love the program (8 wks night float PGY1 seems miserable, schedule would be tough to coordinate with husbands program), uva's pall care fellowship is new this year, not as strong as those in any other city mentioned.

Hi all,

Great forum. I'm interested in going into GI. The bottom of my list is pretty much set, here's the top few:

1) Yale

2) UVA

3) Brown

4) Jefferson

5) BU

I'm definitely sure that I want to keep Yale as my #1 choice. I keep going back and forth about if I should rank Brown or UVA as my #2. I really had a great impression from UVA on the interview day and would not mind living in Charlottesville. UVA also seemed to have a strong GI department with GI wards rotations for medicine residents. The Brown residents seemed really content overall but with fewer people going into GI (from their match lists from the past few years) and almost none staying at Brown for fellowship. Any advice? Thanks.

Any thoughts on the following rank list for someone interested in cardiology:

1. Yale
2. Stony Brook
3. Mayo Clinic MN
4. Mayo Clinic AZ
5. University of Arizona
6. Montefiore
7. OSU
8. Banner Good Sam
9.SUNY downstate

Think most would tell you to move Mayo Rochester, OSU and Monte above Stony Brook. Stony brook should be around 5 or 6 with U of A with Mayo Az, Banner and Downstate being your bottom 3

Bump

AMG looking for a benign, resident friendly, with excellent clinical training, program. Planning on doing a fellowship, but do not know what yet...so I want to keep it as open as I can. I guess currently it is ID, but that could change early on. Help my ranking please:

1. MUSC
2. Carolinas Medical Center
3. UF-Gainesville
4. Emory
5. Brown
6. Tulane
7. UVA
8. Mayo-Jacksonville

Hey guys, sorry about reposting but I would really appreciate your input on my rank list.

Thinking about Allergy/Immunology and want to be able to maintain a social life/have good life work balance. Thanks

1. Hofstra North Shore-LIJ
2. Brown university
3. UMDNJ- Newark
4. UMDNJ-RWJ
5. Temple
6. Ohio state
7. University of Cincinnati
8. Wake Forest
9. Winthrop
10. Dartmouth
11. Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center
12. John Hopkins- Sinai
13. WVU
14. University of Vermont
15. University of Pittsburgh- Shadyside

How about U of Minnesota vs U of Colorado?
Colorado doesn't give information of the yearly fellowship match, except the info on the website for 2012, stating 25% going into fellowship, and most after a year of hospitalist going to fellowship (50-60 % in total). But have good institutions, esp in GI.
Minnesota used to be better, and did match some to Mayo in PulmCC (and cards in the past).
what to you guys think?
UC Denver vs UMinn?

Why is Vermont so low...I'd argue it's better than a lot of the places listed higher on your list. Is it a location thing?

Certainly appreciate the feedback Jackets5! I got a warm/fuzzy feeling  with Stony Brook compared to Monte which seemed kind of rugged. Not sure if that means anything and I should just go with reputation....

middle/bottom list help. this is with my preference. cards/gi? maybe hemonc.
