**Official 2021 Pedo PASS/Interviews/Match/Non-Match**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if you were to take out loans for residency, do those loans qualify for federal loan repayment programs / working at community health clinics? Or is that typically only for dental school loans only (not residency)

Can anyone give some insight on whether it’s important to be at a program that offers a certificate in enteral sedation? It seems many programs don’t offer it so I’m not sure if it is something I should be putting weight on (since it seems nearly every pediatric dentist uses oral meds anyways)

curious, for those who have been interviewing, can you list the number of interviews you have received

I applied to 16 programs. I have had 3 interviews, received formal rejections from 6 programs, 4 assumed rejections (others on this forum have gotten interviews, I have not heard anything from the program), and 3 programs where no one has heard anything yet based on responses to this thread. Almost all programs I've communicated with have said that there were a record number of applicants this year.

I've been out of school a few years, middle-of-the-class dental school stats, with multiple years in GP practice plus a year of practice in a pediatric setting.

I applied to wayyyy tooooo many programs. Interviewed at 4. One was non match and already extended offers to selected candidates. Not heard from 3 as per this forum.

I think its a learning process. I realize so many things I could have done differently.

I was extremely impressed with the couple of programs that focused on a different approach to their interviews rather than the ‘where do you see yourself in 10 years, and why pedo’.

Have been out for a few years, working as a general dentist in a mostly medicaid office.

apply to 6, 1 invitation received, 2 rejection, 1 assumed rejection, and no hearing from 2
I am an international student and had finished 2-year GPR residency program this year.

I applied to 15 programs and got interviews at 13. Every program has been saying how competitive it was this year and from my experience I am seeing the same 15-20 kids at a lot of these interviews. From what the program directors are saying, applicants must have really spread their applications out by applying to more schools. I think this could lead to more spots potentially being open in post match so don’t lose the faith! This is a weird year to be applying! Best of luck

Yes the 2nd round of interviews is Nov16th and Nov 17th

Applied to 12 schools, got 8 interviews
Ahh, when did they send out this info? I assume those of us who didn't get the email aren't in the 2nd round.

Are you a D4?

I applied to 11, have 8 invites so far, 1 official no, 1 “ghost” lol, and waiting on one more! I agree that I’m seeing a lot of the same people on interview lists!

17 programs applied to, 4 programs interviewed at and all the programs are done.

I'm going to mirror what one of the writers mentioned above. These are record numbers of applications (a school mentioned that there were 30% more applicants to their program than previous years) partially due to how easy it is to apply/interview (no housing, traveling costs) and I bet other than for very good reason, why wouldn't one want to interview? That being said, most of the programs are interviewing the same few stand out applicants who can only fill up so many spots. I suspect that there will be a huge number of open spots in multiple programs (even the "great" ones). I don't know how best you would prepare for that hustle, but if you are not getting interviews now, just keep your head up and stay ready. If you know this is the field you want to be in, I hope you all get in and be great pediatric dentists one day.

Interviewed with a program on Friday and was asked how many programs I applied to/how many I interviewed at. They were shocked I had only gotten 3 interviews and reiterated to me I had an outstanding application (aww shucks). They said in any other cycle, I would’ve gotten more interviews so don’t take it so hard, it’s not over till it’s over!

How many places did you apply to? 3 would be great based on me applying to 5 lol

Applied to 14, interviews at 3, official rejections from 4, ghosted from 6, waiting on 1 to send invites out.

I applied to 28, interviewed at 3, formally rejected from 8, ghosted from 14, still waiting to hear from 3  Ruffffff

That’s insane! Given what the PD said and what you’ve shared, I now see how competitive this year is :/

A number of us have hypothesized that the virtual interview cycle is really shaking up numbers. My theory (completely without evidence, fwiw) is that we’ll see:

-Programs will end up fielding candidates from further down their rank lists than they normally do

-There will be more post match spots available than usual

This is totally a guess, based on the fact that top tier applicants seem to be applying to and interviewing at more programs than they normally would (in a year that would require travel for interviews).

Totally agree. Even if it is a guess, it's a very rational and reasonable thing to expect. It'll be interesting to see how the match plays out for sure. I also imagine there might be more weight on program-specific questions, such as "why do you want to come here? why did you apply here?" so PD's can help sift through such a competitive pile of applications.

Can you post match at a program you interviewed at?

Can you post match at a program you interviewed at?
It’s permitted by the rules but yeah. If they interviewed you and didn’t rank you, I don’t think you’d have much chance.

I applied to 15, received 3.5 interviews (0.5 because St. Christopher's played me there with their rounds lol), and I think all of the other programs have already reached out for interviews/rejections.

I have a friend who didn't match for GPR and then ended up matching at a place that didn't rank her (St Barnabas) I'd say that some programs change their perspective after match so why not? It's not like we have to pay for post-match applications anyway right? So might as well apply to any place you'd be OK being a resident at

If you interviewed there and didn’t match anywhere and they still had an open spot that would mean they probably didn’t rank you... odds are that means they would rather not have you join their program due to fit/personality
But what if you were their next pick? Like how many ranks do schools do? Only the number of spots or whoever they would be okay matching at their program?

Highly unlikely that they only rank their exact number of spots, as that would likely leave a huge amount of post-match spots open every year and peds typically has next to none (looking at historical data)

Since the discussion is leaning towards post-match, can someone please clarify these?

1. Is there a place where all the post-match positions will be listed or do we have to go to the individual program website/ email them and find that information?
2. By what date will we have this info?
3. If we did not apply to a program pre-match, can we still apply for their post-match positions?
4. Is there a common deadline for these positions or is it determined by each program?

Thank you in advance !!

All post-match positions will be posted on the Match website at noon on Match Day (1/19/2021). They were exactly on time last year, once you refreshed the page at 12 PM boom they were all there. This is what last year’s looked like. Yes, you can apply to a post-match place that you didn’t originally apply to. The deadline is determined by each program individually I believe, that part I’m not so sure about but I do know the NYU Langone programs had a separate form to fill out for postmatch positions.

If you plan on doing post-match, you need to have everything ready the day of match day (and possibly be able to travel to an interview if needed) and there is no way to know what requirements each program would have so I'd pick one with a lot of requirements and make that your minimum. There is a fee to get boards scores, DAT and ADAT scores, so just know that it won't be free (and some programs may also have supplemental fees). It is a massive gamble but maybe this year will have more post-matches so your options may not be as limited
