Honestly this speaks to me on a spiritual level. I get asked all the time & I'm just like lol it took me 90 minutes to decide what color lipstick to wear today do you think I'm anywhere close to family planning rn ?¿?

I am a single mom to two interested in ESN/NIR. I haven't had anyone give me anything but praise and love, fortunately. The only people I hear saying things like "who will take care of your kids" are on these forums. Actual physicians in the field and other competitive specialities have just emphasized support systems and good nannies to keeping everything working like a well-oiled machine.

Well both of my parents have decided that I will make enough money that I can have a dedicated 'side home' on my property for them to live in. They are trying to entice me by saying, "we will cook food for you and take care of the kids after long days of residency." I don't know how much money they think I'll be making during residency haha, but I'm thankful for their support.

50K is nothing to sneeze at and it is close to the median household income(which is probably two bread earners). It is a job and you learn on all jobs,difference being that the learning might be more structured in residency.

I agree. That's the amount my parents jointly made growing up, supporting a 6 - person household. I get annoyed when people complain about the money made during residency. I get that you work long hours during residency, but you are still being paid!

50 K is median house hold income. so that usually means 2 people working 40 hours. So if a single person were to make it, its likely that they would be working greater than 40 hours per week. I know many fast food managers that work 60+ hours a week and make 32K.

My parents still make close to that, and they work 60 hours a week, each!

You aren't offending anyone, its just tiring to hear of people complain about working 80 hours a week with prospects that are much greater in a few years compared to blue collared people that work 60-80 hours a week with little to no prospects of it getting better. Life is difficult and the hours are though in medicine, being a blue collar worker is no cake walk either, especially when you have to support a family in a non-union environment. Having lived through both bluecollar work and professional high intensity work I can tell you which one I prefer and why it is easier.

Haha this exact thing happened to me today, I was accepted at a school a week ago, and just received another email from them telling me I'm on the waitlist with no explanation about the contradiction with the acceptance email. They didn't intentionally rescind my offer or anything, they literally just accidentally sent me acceptance and waitlist emails, one of which was a mistake, due to horrible organization most likely. I still have no idea if I've been accepted or waitlisted, and they haven't responded to my email about it yet.

Moral of the story: don't withdraw from consideration at any schools after getting an acceptance until you absolutely know they haven't made a mistake. Thank god I didn't like the school anyways and was planning on turning down their offer

Edit: wasn't going to name the school at first, but on second thought they need to be publicly shamed: SUNY Downstate :laugh:

1. Neurology (4)> Neuro critical care/ Endovascular neuro (2)> neuro interventional (1)

2. DR (5)> neuro radiology (2)> neuro interventional (1)

3. Neurosurgery (7)> neuro interventional (1)

+1 - for the most part everyone is supportive. However, I did just leave my long term relationship and my dad made a comment like "you know it's going to be a lot harder by yourself"... like, thanks for the reality check - I wasn't already freaking out about it or anything. 🙄

Quick and short version:

Basically the residency, proper, for certain specialties are stated as "advanced training", in which you start the actual training in the speciality. Some specialties require a preliminary year as an intern before you start the advanced program. This year can be "preliminary medicine", which is just like an IM year, or a "preliminary surgery", which is like a general surgery intern position. After you complete your year in IM for example then you officially start the 4 years of radiology residency.

When you do the match, if you are doing advanced programs, you have two matches, one for your prelim year and one for the residency "proper". The two don't have to be at the same place. A categorical program will have just one program to satisfy the prelim and residency parts in one program, thus one match process.

great explanation! and it makes so much sense now that a friend that I had did his first year of residency where I live and then moved to VA for the last couple of years to finish it off, which always confused me til now haha. Thank you!!!!

I know, I'm still baffled! Yeah I can't imagine they're allowed to revoke an acceptance without any cause whatsoever. Looking forward to their response to my email

I specifically said to wait to give any electronics for school so I could get the newest version before starting (or the older version is cheaper). If I got noise cancelling headphones now they'd just sit in a box for 8 months for example
