Would not WashU be better than UW for someone interested in Cardiology?

A lot of it depends on your priorities as well. If you want to practice in the trenches, UTSW and NYU style may fit you better than say, Cornell.

All solid programs so recognize that if you match at any one of them and you do well (by the standards of Cards programs), you will be fine come fellowship match time.

The OP said both program and geography mattered. Having lived in both StL and Seattle, there's no contest there...I love my in-laws but I don't think you could pay me enough to move back to St. Louis.

But yes, strictly speaking, cards-wise, WashU would be better than UW...but either will be fine.

Anyone feeling silly posting their list because of the super-stars is more than welcome to send me a PM. I'll put the list up anonymously. Or if you like give my best ranking . . . And it should be clear to many by now this is a nonexact, subjective "science".
 
hey, as the Rank list comes closer, I would like to know what you think. I have given all of my interviews. I am still somehwat confused on how i will rank my top 5. i liked all of these programs, i got a good feel from them on my inerview day. I do plan on a fellowship in cardiology, but since all of the programs have there own in-house cards and decent placement if one chooses to go out for a fellow, I am not letting that weigh in on the decision too much. Location does not matter! Thanks!

I would really like to live in Manhattan but I'm not sure if I'm making too big of a sacrifice by choosing Sinai or NYU over places like UCLA, WashU, Michigan, Vanderbilt, and UTSW. Any thoughts on this? I'm probably going into either Hospital medicine, Cards or GI.

With only one change - move RWJMS up to #2 and get rid of Cornell PC - I completely agree with the list as is.

I think you find a cards spot from any of those programs really . . . ranking for IM is a bit different thing than simply ranking the cardiology programs at those places. For instance, I see no reason why a solid candidate from UW or Vandy won't get a nod during interview times from WashU cards. The edge for getting into an upper level fellowship for someone from "in-house" decreases the "better" recognized the academic fellowship, as these places simply take the best candidates from wherever they may be applying from (no hard feelings - when so much money is made from research you've got to take those who will likely produce). This is in contrast to mid-tier places, where many PDs like a "known entity" from their program as the big players don't send them application, or will not seriously rank them high, and all the rest of the applications for those interviewing are fairly similar.

Now if you don't want to be "killed", then UTSW and UW are kind of notorious for being really busy. Hopkins actually sounds busy, but not ridiculously so, maybe mentalgymnast will chime in. Otherwise you'll have to go off your feel for the residents . . . did they look happy, and or rested? I mean I think IM should be busy but not brutal, at least most months.

You gotta go where you'll be happy. It's not like Sinai or NYU turns your fellowship prospects into sheet or anything. Like I said before the "biggest name" on my IM rank list was #4, and the biggest name on my fellowship rank list was also #4.

Interviewed almost exclusively in southern CA. Priorities are to have a shot at heme/onc or GI and to stay in LA for residency. Made the following list based solely on my perceived academic reputation - not sure if my perceptions are accurate, please correct me if you think otherwise. In any case, I suspect that UCSD leads the pack.

Is the difference between UCSD and USC/Cedars/Harbor/Olive View so great that I would be really hurting my chances by choosing an LA program? How should I rank those places, anyhow?

Hey guys, long-time reader, first-time poster. I am in need of a little help with my programs, focusing my list in the Midwest and South. Planning on sub-specializing (something hospital based, Cards/GI/ID/Crit Care, possible academic future). Here are my tops (in no particular order):

Michigan
Vandy
UVA
WashU
Pitt
UNC
UChicago
Loyola
Case Western
MUSC

From previous posts I have a general idea of the relative strengths compared to each other, but am curious most about Pitt (great NIH funding/health system, but not as highly regarded?) and UNC (seems a little toxic) especially. Also, comparing the midwestern and southern programs has been a little difficult. Oh, and I'm couples matching too - IMx2!! Thanks, the input is appreciated!!

-UCSD is far better than any of the LA programs. San Diego is a great city and IMO, I would rather live there than LA. Less Traffic, happier people, better quality of life
- Though, if location really matters, then USC, Harbor and UCI lead the pack in LA.
-Followed by Kaiser LA and Cedars and Olive-View. Kaiser LA is actually a great program. 2 people out of 11 got into GI there last year. Cedars is a good program too but I dont think you would be a great physician, you get better training at many other LA programs.
-Loma Linda is actually pretty good for GI as well but depends if you want to live out there.
-Scripps Green is significantly better than Scripps Mercy and I would rank it up there above Olive View because many people successfully place into GI who attempt to. While, Scripps Mercy does not place anyone into GI or Cards
-CPMC- I heard a rumor that they only take people who do away rotations there
-Huntington- great program, CUSH, great program director, a lot of time to do research

but ya, overall, you would do yourself a disservice by not picking UCSD, I heard great things, and most residents place very well.

So personally, id pick it, based on preference of location:

I am a student from a mid-tier school in the midwest and I would like to go to Southern California. I am ultimately looking at going into GI but I would like to know how to rank these programs. Also if someone could shed some like on my chances at these so cal places I have mid 220 Step 1, and a step 2 of 250. Honors my Sub I of med but just P on med 3rd year. No aways at these places and decent letters. Also I really enjoyed my interviews at the places and felt like Kaiser would be a great place to get a GI fellowship with their amount of time allowed for research and how they take up 2 of their own. But Id like to see other's opinions.

UCI- they usually take 3 of their own for GI here, also the chief resident this year got into John Hopkins GI so this is a really great program
Kaiser LA-2 people got into their own GI program and lots of time to do research with massive Kaiser database
Cedars-Many get into GI, but not in california. doesnt have its own GI program, have to compete with harbor, olive view,ucla, kaiser for ucla gi fellowship spots, doesnt take its own for other fellowships. lots of competition with many people coming here just to get a gi fellowship
Loma Linda- take their own for GI, I heard its a great program, happy residents
Harbor- 2nd best program in LA, after UCLA. you become the best physician you can possibly be, everyone gets their 1st or 2nd residency choice. Statistically speaking, 9/9 people got into GI in the past few years. I dont think any other program can boast a 100% match rate for a field that has 40% unmatched rate.
Olive View-Great Clinical training, very happy residents, not many get into GI from here, however, the PD told others that no one attempted to get into GI the past few years. About 4 years ago, about 5 people got into GI. Also, out of all the UCLA affiliates, it has a greater association with UCLA and you can easily do research at UCLA from olive view
USC- along with ucla and harbor-ucla as best in clinical training, autonomy beyond belief, many people get into GI, lots of research opportunities

Swap UChicago and UVA on your list and call it a day.

Thanks for the input. I can see that most of the LA programs would work. I looked at Cedars match for GI and it was pretty good they were able to put two people into Loma Linda. I just was wondering which program would allow a resident with realistic potential to do research while maintaining the busy schedule. I know USC has research but their hours and work make it hard without enough protected time.

Also I know Kaiser takes their own but am I shooting my self in foot to pass up Cedars and UCI because their connections might be better?

Fellowship selection tends to be more about your performance as a resident, strength and reputation of residency, research, letters (very important), and connections. If you want to do GI sticking with UCI, UCLA-Harbor, Cedars, and Loma Linda (the big runyon guy is there) will put you in a good position. Virginia mason is also known for having a good GI program.

If your are selecting base on what program will put you in a good position for fellowship then a letter from Joe Smoe, GI doc, Cedars Sinai sounds more attractive than Joe Smoe, GI doc, Kaiser. Out east we hear about Cedars all the time.

You also have to think about how many people you are fighting to get these positions. Kaiser only has 11 categoricals per year, Cedars has 44, UCI has 24. It all really depends on which type of environment you want to work in. Not everything is fellowship, fellowship, fellowship. Its the best match where you think you could flourish in and from there you can get a great fellowship. I know there is significantly more research time at Kaiser compared to the rest of the programs. Much fewer ward months, devoted research time outside of elective time and much cheaper area.

Yeah, I think you hurt yourself some with GI not going with UCSD first. It's NOT LA, but I can think of much worse places to do three years of residency than San Diego. So with GI in mind . . . after UCSD . . .

Everything else as you like . . .

Pitt not as highly regarded as compared to what? They aren't one of the elites and not one of the traditional IM powerhouses, but are an up and coming player. Everything from the gossip to actual program description (what they do and how they do it) is "GO". We like them here. 😀

I haven't heard the toxic gossip about UNC. Maybe others can chime in.

Hey all. I am unsure of which fellowship to pursue but I am thinking either Heme/Onc or Endocrine. I want to stay away from a malignant program but want to go somewhere that will be best for me down the road. Ancillary staff should be at least decent. These are the programs I have interviewed at:

Georgetown
Albert Einstein Montefiore
UMDNJ RWJ
North Shore LIJ
UMass
Penn State University
Albert Einstein Beth Israel
SUNY Downstate
UMDNJ NJMS

That order. Maybe move Jacobi up to #3 for its Einstein affiliation but it's a judgement call.
 
I need some help with my rank list. I'm considering hospitalist but want to leave option for fellowship. I prefer Northern California, but I'm open to location. I have my top 3 in Davis, CPMC and SVMC but not sure if reputation-wise that there's much difference between them.

jdh71 and gutonc, can you elaborate on why you ranked UNC highly (realize this is completely subjective) ... I'm actually interviewing there next week and didn't realize it is such a well-regarded program.

It is a very well-regarded program which suffers reputation-wise for being across town from Duke (much like MSSM does in NYC) but is a good program in its own rite. I can't comment on the day-to-day particulars of the program but know a few people who have come out of their IM program and med school who really liked it, and I know a few of their Onc fellows who like the place and have pretty good things to say about the IM house staff (to the extent that fellows anywhere have anything good to say about lazy, no good, useless IM house staff).

That's the order I'd more or less place them in as well. I don't think there's a huge difference reputation-wise between your top 3. If you were gunning for Cards or something it would be a different story.

Thanks for the advise Gutonc. Would you rank it any different if Im interested in GI and Nephrology?
