Official Touro Class of 2021 Interview/Acceptance Thread

For those of you who got in. Would you attend Touro if you got into another school. Does it scare you that it is new? Is this just your "last resort' school. Or is this a school you actually want to attend?
Like if you got into another private school that cost another 60K in tuition over four years, which would you choose?

I would've attend Touro over some private schools. But I got into many great state schools, so Touro definitely wasn't an option afterwards.

It doesn't bother you that they have zero patience in their "patient pool"? (I saw you wrote in a different forum the importance of having a large patient pool.)

From what I got from the administration, there's going to be quite a decent size patient pool
 
They proved to the accreditation team that they have a sufficient patient pool. Thats good enough for me.

Of course they will give you that guarantee. And i also know that Touro has been very successful in starting so many other graduate schools. But how on earth are they gonna have enough patients for 110 and then 220 students within the first couple of years. (even tho they said they will have two students working on a patient - I don't believe that will solve the issue.)

You know that for a fact? That in order to get accredited, they need to prove they have a sufficient patient pool - within the first year or two?

Yes cause its one of the requirements. Prove that the area is underserved and needs a dental school.

I think Touro is a great private school, and I was also very hesitant about the dental patient pool and reputation. I do have some reservations going here but I'm glad they gave me a chance. Their student pool is also very competitive, so they are not giving them out like hot cakes. They have the med school to rely on and so I trust they will run a quality program. This will be a school what you make out of it--and most of their deans/professors (I believe) are from Columbia, so you will get quality education and hopefully connections. Not sure how residency places will see this school if that's a worry you may have.
 
Can anybody that lives near the school fill me in on the weather conditions right now? Is there snow? If so are the roads clear? I'm trying to debate if I should stick to doing a rental or Uber this week.

Of course!
Duration wise- Well, let's just say it was one of the most shortest interviews. Many people including myself had interviews less than 30 mins lol some guy had a 10 minute interview he said.

The interview itself- very very laid back. Maybe 1/2 dental related questions. I had a great time with my interviewer. He asked me what do I wanna talk about and I talked about my hobbies and he just went into a whole bunch of things related to that. Personal stories. Good laughs and Some cool science behind soda and enamel lol

Interview day- make sure to dress warm! You'll be taken via shuttle van to the other med school-related buildings and it requires some walking outside so just dress warm! They provide lunch for the afternoon people and a nice presentation in the beginning. Many faculty members, including my interviewer, came from Columbia and both the faculty and students are extremely friendly.

Awesome so cool! Thank you so much! Were you accepted here? Also is there anyway to prepare for the dental related questions like do we need to work at a dental office or is it just ethics related? Also did they have a coat closet or something if we wear a jacket to the interview? Haha i was worried and didn't want to look unprofessional if i dress super warm. Also were we able to talk to any first year dental students? I am so excited! Sorry for the bunch of questions!

In terms of a coat closet, you will be able to leave your jacket in the cafeteria, where you will be eating lunch provided by the school.

Hey, I interviewed here last week and I can reassure you that the interview is nothing to worry about. If you interviewed at NYU, it feels similar to that but for me personally I thought it was easier. The main questions my interviewer asked was "why touro" and inquiring about my hobbies, particularity with regards to how I can show manual dexterity. It was conversational and he changed things up half way and had me interview him for a bit lol we ended up talking about model boats somehow along the way. If you worked at a dental office you might get asked about your experience with that or how your shadowing went which he asked me to talk about but I didn't get any ethics related questions. The room everyone is in on the 1st floor and has a lot of seats and from what I saw, everyone rested their coats or bags on their chair or nearby after settling in. The interviews are on the 4th floor so you can leave your stuff before going to the interview itself. A few current students came and joined at our tables so there is plenty of opportunity to ask around. If a few are lingering around in the sim lab, you can talk to them as well during the tour. Don't stress over it too much, it was pleasant and relaxed. Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine!

Coming from an urban background, I welcomed the change of pace and I was particularly interested in their emphasis on behavioral sciences and management integrated into their curriculum. Basically that regardless of where I went, I would learn how to practice. But knowing how to manage a successful practice was not in a typical curriculum from what I've looked into and that was something that stood out to me and would be of considerable use. Having a minor in business also made me appreciate that aspect quite a bit.

I'm sure other schools might have that management aspect to some degree but I'm not too familiar with any others.

I also have tried to reach out to them, and only get an answering machine.
I am trying to figure out the school schedule. I know orientation starts July 5th. But is there a summer break besides that? And I also know that with their Jewish off days, it would be interesting to know what that does to the scheduling.

School starts in July because of a lot of the Jewish holidays in October. We also end earlier on Fridays 🙂
 
Does anyone have a general schedule of classes? Like when does the summer session begin/end, as well as the fall and spring semesters?

I interviewed early December and they said we will be hearig back hopefully by the end of this week 🙂 there was not a coat closet when we were at the interview so they just made us all put it in the lunch room. But everyone takes their jacket from there to go on the tour and many people had jackets all size and colors so I wouldn't worry too much about looking unprofessional. Just keep it simple and don't stick out too much with your jacket haha

Yes, we were able to sit, talk, and eat lunch with the dental students. Despite them having finals, they sat with us and got to know us as well as answer all our questions.

They also said that they had someone who was accepted during their orientation week so there's hope until then.

Every school has the possibility of accepting people during orientation week. If someone drops out last minute for any one of a million reasons, they will need someone to fill that spot. Last year was also an exception because the school was only accredited way after all the other schools have sent out their acceptances. I believe there were some people accepted last year without even having an interview. This year the school is still running a little bit late though, compared to other schools, so don't give up and make sure to show you are interested, if you want to go. Send them an email or something because no one there answers the phone.

Congrats! Can you let us know what you mean by intense? Did they ask you specific questions about your scores or was it about ethical questions?
 
Anyone has interview on next Weds morning 0800, and plan to stay @ La Quinta Inn near the school?
I will be able to offer a ride to school early in the morning.
Even though the hotel is only 1 mile away from school, but no sidewalks alone Saw Mill River Rd., plus trucks are sharing the road.

I had my interview as well and it left me with a great impression of Touro!

I had the exact opposite experience. I was ready to talk about myself and barely said anything. My interviewer was leading the conversation to random things like the construction going on and and the curriculum. I walked out feeling confused since I haven't come across that before.
