Yeah, I'm excited about our class! Yet nobody has said anything about meeting at MS0. Are you guys going to find each other without me? 🙁 Or are you all reticent about the subject? Am I the only one who really wants to put faces with screen names? I would put my screen name on my nametag, but that is silly. It would alienate a few people. So speak up (it can be through PM or even AOL IM, you know).

I submitted my FAFSA today! All right! Who's ahead of the game? Me, baby, me! Ok...enough victory dancing...back to the real world...and umm...where's the money...aren't I supposed to get money now?

Several downtown apartments offer "affordable housing" programs to students. One is called Jefferson at the North End. It is right next to the American Airlines Center (where the Mavericks and Stars play). It is about 8-10 minute drive to school and VERY easy access to all major highways. My rent is $650 a month for a one-bedroom apartment. It is smaller in size than the Med Park but much higher quality. The market price for my unit is probably around $900-1000. You need to apply early to get one of these units and fill out some financial info, but its worth it. Check out the website if you are interested -- www.jeffersonatnorthend.com

Can we submit FAFSA even if we're not 100% sure where we'll be going?

My plan is to do my taxes and FAFSA the weekend after the MS0 weekend.

Harrie, please check your private messages when you can.

Where do you find information concerning affordable housing and what do students qualify for?

Ditto on the waiting to fill out FAFSA until after M0. Right now the shock (but definitely not the excitement) has worn off. The reality of having to figure out financial aid and housing stuff is alot to think about it. I'm waiting until I get somewhat of a clue in two weeks. Can't wait to see y'all there.

First, I know I am going to Southwestern and am not waiting on any other schools, but I understand the caution in those who are. Second, as for the FAFSA, I have heard that the earlier you get it in, the more money you could be entitled to get. Also, I called Southwestern, and they want your parents's information too, and I knew my dad would have to work on it. Therefore, I got started early and am already done. Now, I don't even have to think about it.

bumpety bump bump I wanna know the answer to this.

I would suggest contacting Southwestern and asking if they have an official guide. Otherwise, ask them if you could get the contact info from a student or relay your information to a student committee who might contact you. My instinct says this will all be covered on MS0 and in upcoming weeks, but there is nothing wrong with contacting them now and emphasize the importance of your getting on top of this early. So yeah...good luck in finding a place. I am sure the people at Southwestern will go out of their way to help you. They have always seemed quite pleasant when I talked to them!

12 days til MSO weekend. 🙂

You need to call the apartment complex directly to find out about affordable housing.
www.jeffersonatnorthend.com
I think that Jefferson Properties has a few other complexes on the program too.

I've been counting the days. I wish there was something else to do to get ready. I'm going to get a window sticker for my car on MS0 weekend!

Are any of you out of state, or international students? Or do you know of any?

Also, if you are out of state, are you doing MD or MSTP?

Thanks alot and congrats on acceptance. That is my dream school.

JD

congrats to all that have been accepted to southwestern! i thought maybe i can lend a little insight into the dallas living situation, since i used to work uptown for a while. uptown is a great area, and there are some really great apartments to be found here. also there's a surprising amount of stuff to do here - great restaurants, nightlife etc. etc. as for apartments in uptown, they're a little expensive for dallas (upwards of $800/mo). but you get a LOT for this price (i.e. they're pretty much luxury apartments). when i was apt hunting, i checked out jefferson and post properties, and of the two post is definitely more reasonable although not as nice. my friend got an efficiency in a pretty safe area for about $500/month, but she *really* lucked out (they were having some good deals/specials) and her place is tiny. these places are about 10-15 min drive from the school though, but they are in a very trendy/nice part of town.

the area around smu is also really nice. very rich neighborhood = highland park/university park, where the likes of jerry jones and other famous people live. apartments here can be nice too, but expensive. it's about 15 mins away from swestern i think, but am not sure (ppl please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong)

the area around swestern is a different story. while not all bad, there are definitely some sketchy neighborhoods you want to avoid. as for irving - yech, i wouldn't really live there if you're young/unmarried, as it is far removed from most of the fun things to do in dallas imo. i would think living in the swestern apartments might be a good deal.

good luck to yall!

Thanks!

By the way, mind telling us how you've enjoyed your experiences at UTSW? Anything you disliked?

Spumoni is an applicant just like us, however she works in the Dallas area.

I'm Out of State, MD program. There are several other people from my school who got in, too.

Oops.

I just thought of this, but we don't have to dress up for the MS0 weekend, do we? I mean, it's not like we have to impress them any more, eh?

You can reread the MS0 packet if you would like, but I recall it been fairly emphatic that they don't want anyone dressing up. In their mind, you have impressed them enough, and now they want you to relax. I will probably wear jeans and a collared shirt each day. Though I don't want to dress up, I don't want to look like a slob either. I would like to make a pleasant impression on our future classmates.

OOh...we're finally on page 7. 🙂 We've been stuck on page 6 for far too long.

Have you decided what school you are going to?

So I have been perusing the online access to the calendar and curriculum at UTSW, and I have decided that I want to take all of the electives. Ok, ok, I know that isn't possible, but they all look so darn good!

After reviewing the calendar, I don't think our breaks are too bad. We don't have to start in July, and the vacations are of decent length. I had expected medical school to have fewer days off than this....(not that I'm complaining 😉)

Here is the link so you all may explore too...in case you lost the link from the interview packet...UTSW Web Curriculum

Does anyone know when the White Coat Ceremony is traditionally? I want to say its in October but I haven't been able to find anything to confirm this.

Spumoni....if you aren't a student....what would you be doing at the MS0 weekend?

***************************

Shouldn't the White Coat ceremony be at the beginning of the semester and not in the middle of all our tests and classes??

**************************

I looked at the calendar. I love the fact that we don't have block exams!!!! I always manage to screw up finals because I'll have 3 in a day.

Spumoni is an applicant like us so she is at MS0 weekend for the same reasons we will be. Well, maybe not the exact same reasons, but probably similar ones.

White Coat ceremony is either at the very end of September or in the middle of October (couldn't find it on the website calendar). I also wish it were at the beginning of the semester and am not sure why they put it later in the year.

Are any of you guys going to get a stethoscope? I remember hearing a lab ta talking about how med students by stethoscopes and carry them around to look cool, having no idea how to properly use them. He also said we would be getting ads to buy them. Haven't gotten any yet...maybe that fad passed.
Block exams don't treat me well either. Then again, I expect to be studying all the time.

Also, here is the website for The Village apartment complex. It is just across the highway from Highland Park (so about 20 minutes from campus), and I think it is pretty safe. On the website you can sift through personalized options for what apartment you are looking for. It is a young, singles area of town, and the prices range from 500-over 1000 dollars a month.

Thanks for the info....

I don't think I'm going to get a stethoscope. I don't see any need in listening to my cadavers heartbeat 😉. I'm not sure when we start seeing patients but I don't think it's within the first 2 yrs so what's the point???

I think I'm going to have to get a room mate. ......

You can volunteer at clinics in Dallas to start seeing patients early. Otherwise, we'll be practicing with standardized patients (aka actors), learning how to ask questions and feel comfortable in the role of a doctor. I'm ok with that because I understand the reason to have an environment that can be controlled more than the real world. Besides, for those who want to get in on the action early, volunteering at a clinic should provide plenty of that. My brother said they'll make you take patient history and present the patient to the physician (sounds good enough to me). In the mean time, we'll have actors whom we're allowed to make a mistake or two on without hurting the patient's confidence in medicine.

So I found a book in the library that follows the history of medical schools in Dallas, beginning at the turn of the century. Did you know that there were two schools in 1909? One was Baylor University Medical School and the other was Texas College of Physicians and Surgeons, affiliated with Southwestern in Georgetown and later SMU. This is quite interesting. I'll keep you all updated with any other tidbits I find fascinating.

Oh yeah, before those schools came into being, you could mail money two a "second floor medical school," and they would send you your MD without any classes. I think I am going to look for one of those and skip this 4 year stuff....

I finished the book. It turns out that Baylor Medical School moved to Houston over a dispute with the Dallas faculty over funding, denomination (wanted to be nonsectarian), etc. The interesting part is that they left virtually everything behind, their faculty, their students, the buildings. Only the name went to Houston. UT-Southwestern has more history in Baylor than Baylor College of Medicine does! Also, the Harrison of Harrison's Internal Medicine was a professor at Southwestern as well as the dean for a few years. Anyways, it was a very interesting read. The history behind Southwestern runs much deeper than when the school officially started in 1943.

I am glad I was not applying to attend there during the 40's and 50's. They took classes in prefabricated plywood barracks with terrible equipment! Solid funding didn't come into place until the 60's and 70's, and now it has increased exponentially!

hmmm....right now i'm pretty definite where i'm heading, but i'm still waiting on financial aid before i make the big decision...so keeping my options open...

I received an e-mail today confirming UTSW's receipt of my acceptance form. Did anyone else get that today? The only reason I ask is because they got my form last Monday so I am assuming everyone is getting contacted today about it....

I really wish they'd release the names of people that got in by undergrad school. I only know one guy that got in from UT and I KNOW there are so many more.

Eh well...I guess that's what MS0 weekend is for.

I got the email today, just checked after seeing the update. I am glad to have you on top of everything.

Spumoni:

Let me know when you make your decision! Wish you luck on the $$$$$.

Now I have moved onto the book Internal Bleeding....from the beginning I can tell this is an excellent book, and I recommend it to all of you...it seems to take a very candid approach to iatrogenic medicine....thought you all should know...

Of course, I'm probably the only person here who hasn't read it. Getting behind already...crud...

Yea, I got the whole acknowledgment of the acceptance form. I was talking to my roommate tonight who's a first year at A&M. He said their M0 day is tomorrow. I really wish it was next Friday already.

I also got the email...pretty excited about going back.. one of my friends is there right now interviewing for grad school. Has anyone been to the top of the research tower? nice view! i went to it last year for grad school recruitment (i decided on medicine, however). they also have a really cool "center" where all they do is invent new machines, its pretty awesome. you all should take a trip over there if you ever have time. ask about the "vaccine gun"

I received two things in the mail from UT-Southwestern. First, I got a housing application for the Southwestern Apartments. Second, I received a letter from the Department of Internal Medicine about summer research opportunities. Have you all gotten those as well? MS0 approaches! 😀
