Ohio University (OU-HCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone tried checking their status? I have been complete for a few weeks and have not received any complete emails. I also tried emailing and got no reply. Does anyone know a phone number to call??
I would just call them at the office of admissions. they have the best admissions staff and they will take time to answer all your questions.

I think they probably tend to pull more heavily from IS early in the year especially. There are plenty of people not from Ohio at HCOM. In general though their # of apps is skyrocketing, as are admissions stats. It is a very competitive school even for the ISers.

I interviewed on 10/26...

... and I got the acceptance email on 10/29!!! 😀

I love OU. It's a wonderful school!! Very excited 🙂

God bless to you all 🙂

If any 11/2 interviewees are on here, it was nice meeting you. Maybe we'll see each other in the fall!

Good luck to all and stay strong!

<edit> Accepted 11/2, didn't post it right away because I didn't want to add to the fire, waiting the weekend was probably bad enough as it is.

I have to say that I was amazed and totally impressed with OU. The staff is so friendly and seem to be very passionate about helping their students become exceptional doctors. There are so many unique and truly outstanding opportunities at this school that I would recommend to the students interested in this school to make sure to check out the website. It is very user friendly and has some great videos on it as well. The campus is beautiful and the school has incorporated new technology throughout the buildings and classrooms. The staff at OU seems to understand that people have different learning styles and they want to be supportive of that. They also have an extremely supportive network of people to help you along as you progress on the path to becoming a doctor. I have spoken to several students who went here as undergraduates and they only had good things to say about OU which, to me, says a lot about the university. The time and dedication that has gone into the curriculum and other opportunities at OU really shows. The interview day here is long as with most other medical schools but it goes quickly and was a great chance to get to know more about OU and what it would be like to be a student here. I am so glad I had the chance to interview here. The school has exceeded my expectations about medical school and I would be honored to get my degree from this university. Good luck to all during this application cycle!

Just sent a new LOR and will be sending an update letter this week. I was really hoping for a shot here. 🙁

Same here. Have an acceptance at a school I'll be very happy to attend but still hung up on this school and one other. Would love to get a look. Ready for some OOS love!

Waitlisted after my 11/2 interview. I don't think my interviewers appreciated the fact that I was a math major and did not take more than the medical school prerequisites. On a happier note, I am moving on and attending DMU for the Class of 2017. OU-HCOM lost. DMU-COM won.

I am sorry to hear you will not be joining us at OU-HCOM. Congratulations on your acceptance at DMU-COM!

Does anyone know if there is a facebook group for the class of 2017 yet? I would really like to get one started or join one if there is already one up and running. It would be a great way for us all to get to know one another better and share tips on housing, textbooks, maybe even get some 1st and 2nd year students to join to help answer questions, ect. before starting classes in the fall. If you are interested please let me know.

Wow an interview invite 2 weeks after submitting my secondary! It's for 12/7, but I'd like to try and reschedule for the week after (work stuff). Anybody know if they are receptive to reschedules?

This thread was hopping last year. Quite different this year. Pretty disappointed that I probably won't be hearing anything from here. Oh well...

After doing a lot of thinking and talking things over with my family, I believe I've made my final school decision and will be withdrawing. Good luck to everyone!

Where is your final destination?

DMU, unless I get into my two 'home' MD schools. But maybe OU-HCOM, if they can knock my socks off.

Last year the admissions faculty started the 'official' Facebook page for the incoming class near the start of the new year, so I would hold out another month or so until that gets going. Anyone who's accepted will probably get an email with the link to the Facebook group, among other things.

Also congrats to anyone who has gotten acceptances thus far, and hopefully I'll meet a lot of you next year! And to those of you still waiting to hear from admissions, it is certainly not too late. Remember that they do interviews into April, and if you get an interview you have a very good shot at getting an acceptance, even if it's off of a waitlist. Good luck!!

Any questions, please feel free to reply or message me. I'm a current first year and would love to answer any questions you guys may have!

I have an interview on 12/14 and need to interview on 12/7 ha, opposite as KinesiologyNerd. Downside to interviewing at other schools so early is that the non-refundable deposit is due on 12/14. Too bad we can't switch because OU is my first choice and I don't want to give money to another school if I by chance get accepted. Anyways, just a question to the people who already interviewed. How did the flow of the interview go? I've had two so far, and one was really laid back and focused mostly on my history and what I bring to the table, no political questions or my view on ObamaCare and the such. The second one, had a good amount of questions based on ObamaCare and how it would affect my decision to become a physician and my viewpoints on the legislature. I am fairly knowledgable on it, but not that well versed in the total legislature because, while I know it affects me, it does not affect my choice to practice. I am NOT trying to get specific interview questions or anything like that, but don't want to be blindsided in the same respect. Just want to get a feel for how things went, how the interviewers were, and how the overall day was.

Thanks.

I'd be pretty interested in knowing that too. My first interview (USUHS) I spent one interview talking about football for 15 minutes, and military medicine for the rest.

BTW I'm keeping my 12/7 interview. Sorry NormalsNotNorm 🙁

You have 3 x 30min interviews with 1 interviewer, 2 of mine were faculty and the last was an alumni who is a practicing physician. Mine were all very conversational, they covered the standard why medicine, why DO, why this school questions. I don't recall any situational or ethical questions, had a question or two on what I thought about the ACA and how I thought it would influence things going forward. Most of the questions focused on things that I'd done or planned to do, what I thought or how I reacted etc. It was my first interview and I've had one other after but I thought it was very relaxed and felt they wanted to get to know what/how I thought as opposed to what I had memorized.

anyone know if I have any chance of getting in with a 21O and a 3.5 if I'm IS??

If the rest of the application is competitive and you have really projected a genuine interest in medicine in you secondary essay, the ADcoms might take interest in you. Who knows? I would say never loose hope . However, on the pragmatic side I would identify the deficiencies in my MCAT prep and retake it . If you can get above 25 your chances are definitely brighter

Got accepted on Monday 12/3.

I interviewed on 11/30!!! So excited! 🙂

Your GPAs are going to hurt you. I have slightly higher sGPA, a few points higher cGPA, similar MCAT, am in-state, and have not yet received an invite. Nice MCAT though! HCOM does look at your whole application though, so your experiences outside of the classroom might give you a boost. Good luck!

interview invite for Jan. 11th!

Does anyone know of/recommend any hotels in the area?

Thanks!

Congrats! Would you mind sharing when you were complete?

Asking because I've been getting interviews OOS, and accepted OOS, but have heard not one prep from in state schools in Ohio..

I was complete in early August. I got the invite about 2 weeks after sending an update/interest letter, so maybe you could try doing that if you haven't

Just got an email that I'm invited to interview! YAY! The email said they wanted to give me advance notice since it's in early January, with the holidays coming up.

interview invite for Jan. 11th!

Does anyone know of/recommend any hotels in the area?

Thanks!

Just noticed your question on the hotels in Athens. Have you already found one? If not, I would recommend the OU Inn. It is right down the road from the school.

I booked it at the Holiday Inn Express, but thanks ill remember that for next time!

Finally received an II, glad to have at least one Ohio school appreciate me! 😛

It is for February 1, been complete since November 5th, and I am in-state.

Are there any news on the COMLEX pass rate? Looks like people didn't know in past pages, and Google does not give me any results.

Edit: Also, when would first year start, exactly? It looks like there was Orientation in July, does that last throughout the summer? Because I was planning on backpacking through Europe and visiting family May - early August, hoping this would still be a possibility.

Edit 2: I was able to find the answer to my last question. Orientation was July 9th, and this PDF says that classes started the same day as well. Second year students started class August 6th.

Does anyone know what the acceptance rate of those interviewed is?

Earlier in the thread someone said that there are 240 interviews for approximately 140 seats.

Compared to the other DO school threads, this thread seems to have low number of replies. Is it because OU interviews less amount of students?

It's mostly because OU interviews and accepts mostly in-state students. OOS comprise 17% of students.

Congrats on your II!

OU-HCOM's pass rates for the COMLEX meet or exceed national averages. The school does a great job of preparing its students; a 'practice' exam of sorts is taken in your second year, and based on that the school helps you decide if you're ready to take the real COMLEX.

First year does begin in July, and you essentially go straight through from July to December (with the exception of Thanksgiving Break). So unfortunately you would not really have any free time once you start orientation, as you spend a month in Immersion before starting your first official block. All of this is mandatory to get you prepared for the 'real thing' (Immersion isn't officially graded, but this is when you learn a great deal of anatomy and basic concepts that will benefit you later on). I would recommend getting all of your traveling, etc. done in May and June -- I was able to backpack in Europe and take a US road trip last year before starting orientation/immersion July 9th. First year students for the upcoming year will be starting on July 15th (2nd years start August 19th).

Feel free to ask me more questions, and let me know if you need any more clarification on anything. I'm a current first year so I'd be happy to help!

I'm sorry if I didn't see this posted elsewhere, but what is the deposit amount? (Wishful thinking, depending on how my interview goes on Friday.)

Good luck on Fri!

Just wanted to update, I asked them yesterday if they had any earlier dates, the lady told me that she will put a note next to my name. So today I got a call, and changed my day to this Friday (2 weeks earlier).

Thanks for the information! Couple questions for you:

Do you happen to have numbers for the pass rate?
Are there any details on the 5 year contract?
I've been looking at the tuition numbers, is there a reason that 3rd and 4th years have cheaper housing and food?

I unfortunately cannot recall exact numbers for the pass rate, but I did a quick search and found that a few years ago OU-HCOM's pass rate was 98%. The high pass rate may be in part because of the 'screening' process with the practice exam...and also because the school really is great at preparing its students 🙂

I don't have a lot of info on the 5 year contract, as I'm in-state. All I know is that if you're out-of-state and you plan on attending OU-HCOM, you need to sign a contract promising that you'll practice in Ohio for 5 years following training. However, there seem to be a few 'loop-holes' regarding this contract (ex: residency may potentially count towards some of that time). Here's a link that might be helpful:
http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/saffairs/survival_manual/out_of_state_admission_contract.htm

I'm not sure where you got the information (particularly about housing) for the tuition/expenses stats, but this link gives you general idea of how much the school expects students to pay for various things:
http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/Aid/fin_aid_edu_budget.htm

Keep in mind, however, that this is quite variable. You don't have much choice in how much you pay for food/rent in Athens since it's a small place, but there's definitely some wiggle room. I also never paid nearly as much for books/equipment as what the sheet has listed for 1st years. I wouldn't be too scared by the numbers, the financial aid faculty are really helpful and will meet with students personally to work out budgets and loan details. In regards to your original question, I could see room and board potentially being cheaper if you decide to live with friends or family during your 3rd/4th year clinicals; but again, it really depends on the location you end up at and your personal budget.

Sorry for not giving you very direct answers to all your questions; I'll try to do some research/inquiring and get back to you!

Just got an email indicating I will be receiving an interview invite by mail. Will be withdrawing that invite and committing to another school. Hopefully one of you gets my spot. IS 3.4 cpga, 3.15 sgpa, 29 MCAT.

Got back from the school, I was *very* impressed with it. The interviewers answered all my questions thoroughly, and it went very well. So well in fact, that I received a call 2 hours after the interview to ask whether I would be available in July because they would like to have me attend the new class!

I've been accepted!!

Thanks for all your help and information, the contract question you actually answered. I thought in-state students had the same contract, but if they do not then no issue. I am in-state.

I was waitlisted-kind of surprised because I thought the interviews went really well. Anyone know how many people they take off the waiting list in the end?

The number of students taken from the wait list will depend on how many people leave the class before the start of orientation. It really varies from year to year. There were a few years in the past where no one was taken from the list, but it is not uncommon to go fifteen or twenty people down the list. Some people called off the list have already committed elsewhere, so then they just go to the next person down until the spot is filled and the class stays constant at 140.
