  • Work in the dental school oral surgery clinic (dentoalveolar clinic)
  • In-house call (5-7/month on average) at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Handle scheduling for OR
  • Manage inpatients at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Weekly didactics and monthly journal club
The program has a lot of dentoalveolar and trauma. ENT and plastics don’t cover facial trauma calls here. In addition, the residents and attendings are helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the resident lounge offers free and unlimited coffee, soda, and snacks.

Personal experience: I was a non-categorical intern at the dental school. After one year of internship at UMKC, I felt comfortable doing complex facial lacerations, beside I&D of dental infection, MMF (maxillomandibular fixation) placement, excisional/incisional biopsy, impacted third molar extractions, and socket augmentation independently as well as reading CT head/face. Doing an internship at UMKC definitively boosted my resume. I received over 10 interviews and was matched to a fairly competitive program. Highly recommend doing an internship at UMKC.

Please send your CV, LOR, dental school transcript, and CBSE score if you ready took it to [email protected]. Feel free to DM me for any questions.

The Department of Surgical Specialties at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry in Lincoln, NE has one non-categorical OMFS internship position open for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Our internship has been ongoing since 1992 under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph B. Bavitz (OMFS) who is also chairman of the Department of Surgical Specialties. Our interns have historically had a high match rate to OMFS residency programs.

Responsibilities:
  • Seeing patients in the graduate oral surgery clinic, which includes performing consultations/treatment planning/supervised treatment to the full spectrum of dentoalveolar procedures, benign pathology (bony and soft), bone augmentation, and managing the more medically complex patients at the college.
  • Providing moderate intravenous sedation to medically appropriate patients. Our previous 3 interns have each completed over 125 moderate IV sedation cases. You will get ample experience in IV cannulation and providing safe outpatient anesthesia in a supervised environment.
  • Providing backup to the dental school residents on call for COD patients. You are not on primary call. Additionally, note this is not facial trauma call at a hospital. There is ample time to study for the CBSE.
  • Supervising our D3 and D4 students in undergrad oral surgery for half a day/week.
  • Participation in didactic activities, including the graduate sedation course, attending weekly implant seminars, and an annual hands-on course which, in the past, has been geared towards ridge augmentation/grafting and soft tissue management. Additionally, there is ample opportunity to be involved in research.
  • Assisting as a member of the Code Blue team for responding to medical emergencies at the College of Dentistry and assisting the department chair for simulation based medical emergency training at our high fidelity simulation center.
Since there is no OMFS residency program at the dental school, this internship offers a unique and robust experience for office based oral surgery and intravenous sedation. You will have your own office, a dedicated assistant for your schedule and a fully equipped, dedicated surgical suite. Supervision is by 1 full time and 1 part time OMFS. The faculty are very approachable and dedicated to mentoring aspiring residency applicants. Inter-departmental collaboration is encouraged with our colleagues in Oral Pathology, Orthodontics, Endodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

This position in Lincoln, NE is not affiliated with the UNMC OMFS residency program in Omaha, NE. Please note there is no hospital/OR component to our internship at present. This is subject to change depending on supervising faculty. The hospital component was present in previous years and the intern was first assist on orthognathic/trauma cases.

Salary/Benefits: Non-categorical interns are paid a competitive stipend/benefits like PGY-1s through the Dental School.

Eligibility: Eligible candidates must have completed a DMD/DDS from a CODA approved U.S Dental School and have an unrestricted valid Nebraska state dental license prior to starting. The COD will provide ACLS training, DEA licensing etc. This position is open to US Citizens or permanent residents only.

Please contact Dr. Joseph B. Bavitz at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions. Interested candidates may also apply using the following link: Surgical Specialties Fellow

Strong overall during the year.

OMFS Internship at UMKC

UMKC School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri is looking to fill two non-categorial internship positions. Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns. Duties include:
  • Running the OMFS clinic at the UMKC School of Dentistry
  • Taking in-house call (q4-5) at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
    • OMFS covers trauma 365/24/7 at both hospitals; we do not share with ENT or plastics
  • Assisting in the OR
  • Participating in weekly lectures and monthly journal club
Personal Experience: I am currently a non-categorical intern at the dental school. At this point, I'm comfortable interpreting CTs, repairing complex facial/scalp lacerations, doing bedside I&Ds of dental infections and PTAs, managing facial fractures, placing patients into MMF with ivy loops or arch bars, and dentoalveolar procedures (extractions of impacted teeth, alveoloplasties, socket preservations, tori removals, soft tissue reductions, etc.). The culture here is awesome. I've already made some lifelong friends in the short amount of time I've been here. Next year's chiefs and upper levels are fantastic and will always be there when you need 'em. Lastly, I don't know if I'll match on Monday, but I did get 20+ interview invites this cycle, and I had plenty to talk about when asked about my experiences as an intern.

If you're interested, please send your CV and CBSE score (if you've taken the exam) to Dr. Kao at [email protected].

Feel free to DM me if you've got any questions.
Bump.

Also, I forgot to mention:
- Potential applicants must have a green card or US citizenship with eligibility to obtain a Missouri dental license.
- You're not just monitoring dental students. You get to work 1-on-1 with the attending and take whatever case you want for yourself, for any of the dentoalveolar procedures I mentioned above. It's the perfect, most well-balanced 1-year experience in OMS, assuming you're willing to learn.
- If you haven't taken the CBSE yet or are planning to retake, you'll have more than enough time in June and July to make it happen.

OMFS internship opportunity still available at Nassau University Medical center in Long Island. Please see above post.

I know for a fact you guys had non-cats that didn't match in the past 2+ years. don't lie.

We matched all 5 this year, and last year. I am currently a non-cat here and well all matched! I know every one from last year and they all matched as well. Happy to share proof if you want :)

Non-Categorical Internship Opportunity

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry has one non-categorical internship position open for the 2024-2025 academic year.

All applicants must obtain an active PA dental license.
Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns in the program.
Our program will be accommodating in terms of taking time off if needed in July to study for CBSE.

Opportunities:
I. Interns will have the opportunity to perform the full range of dentoalveolar procedures, benign pathology, implant placement, bone and soft tissue augmentation, consultations/treatment planning and managing medically complex patients.
II. Covering the outpatient sedation center, completing more complicated procedures under moderate/deep intravenous sedation, and assisting with the sedation itself.
III. Taking dental and facial trauma call at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia (Level I Trauma Center). The call is busy, but is split with Plastics, ENT, and a separate 4 Year OMFS program, so it is not as frequent, offering interns more time for studying.
