OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I played very little this summer/fall with mcat, classes and application. I told my golfing partners to be ready for twice a week in the spring (only taking 7 hours) and three times a week in the summer ( first time with no classes)

What course do you usually play in OKC or Edmond...I know of some good ones in Tulsa, you know, for the days we may not have to study. I speak as if I will be there, but I am optimistic.

Most definitly. I heard a rumor, is it true phlame?

If its the rumor that I think that you're implying at, my MDApps says it all.
If not that, then I have no clue.

Anyways, I have never golfed that much though I would love to get into it soon since it will be my future past time as a doc lol. Anyways, I am taking 11 hours in the spring but should have plenty of spare time, atleast compared to this semester.

I'm interviewing on 11/30, anyone else have that same date? Anyone care to share their interview day experiences/give advice?

Hate to sound ignorant, but what is Med-X?

Hey Marsh at least you're not still trying to focus on finals and semester projects while waiting! I fried a slide of some of my bacteria today -doh. Dreaming of OSU medical school!

TAMU golf course is, by the way, one of my favs - played all 4 years my brother was there. And I've already been scoping out Cherokee Hills for next Fall. Does OSU have a course in Stillwater with student rates?

Its the best I can find at the moment, couldn't find any info on the 2010 one though it will be the same most likely. To sum it up though, its an open house of the school for anyone to go and tour and experience it with demonstrations and one-on-one interactions with students and staff.

For interview advice, just check out the interview feedback listed for the school via the link at the top of the page. Personal advice from myself would be to go in relaxed, be honest and don't try to push anything over them including any faults you have or failures you may have experienced, and ultimately walk in with an open mind not allowing any biases you have to stir a false feeling.

My interview was somewhat different from the others and not what I was expecting. With that said my advice is to be familiar with A.T. Still and osteopathic medicine in general, as well as the differences of the medical practices (osteo vs. allo)! Good Luck OSU is a great school, you will love it the moment you walk in and the student ambassadors are there to welcome you! It really is not stressful just talk with the other prospective students and that really eases the stress plus you get to practice talking (I know sounds weird, who really practices talking)!

Mostly play Kickingbird, Hefner, coffee creek, and silverhorn Have played others around the area but frequent those.
Hoping that attending OSU would get me a discount at karston creek, but not holding my breath.

I think I am going to have to cough up the $300 to play there sometime in my life, but not anytime soon. Plus, did you know that it is cartpath only there, lots of walking? I wouldn't even get a cart.

On a side note, anybody get any calls? I'm sure if they did they would be on here fairly quickly with the smiley faces.

I did hear that, maybe I can be the first one kicked off for letting a six year old drive the cart ( he has only almost crashed three times: into the return building and trees)

No call for me yet...anyone else get the call? I do know that they are interviewing again on/around the 20th (someone on here has an interview that day), so I would assume that the call will come sometime very soon or atleast I hope!

to those of you already accepted, did you get your acceptance by mail, phone, or email?

I dont think they are going to call today...🙁

Each day that goes by without a call only means one more day closer to the call...I keep checking this site to see if any of you have posted good news to see where I am, because I think we all would get the call on the same day!

we were told that if you get accepted you would get a call from Dr. Stewart and a UPS package and if you were waitlisted or rejected then you get regular mail and no phone call!

I just got a call from a random phone number with a 918 area code and I got excited...........turned out to be a wrong number! Not cool

lol...I saved the number in my phone , I assume they only have one outgoing number.

I saved Sarah and Lindsey's phone numbers in my phone early on for checking up on my application. When I got the call, it popped up on caller id as one of the two, I don't remember which. I have a feeling it'll be Friday.

Yeah, deep down I am thinking the same. But there is hope for tomorrow, I look on here like every 5 minutes to see if anyone got a call, it is sad. I think there are four of us on here who interviewed 2nd round, so I figure atleast two of us will get a call, although I am hoping everyone does.

If you have a phone that gets email (only way to get email in my opinion), then set the thread to send message when a new post arrives, you can see the post in the email. That way when you see someone posts an acceptance, you can start frantically yelling at your phone to "ring da%n it." I speak from no experience, absolutely none on that matter, yup that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I am going to have to do that, I just fear the depression that will ensue if I dont get a call...but from what everyone says the waitlist is not the end of the world.

I know there is no way any of you will follow this advice but here goes..... STOP WORRYING, if you interviewed this early you are in very good shape.

Oh, it all makes sense now, the knot in my stomach is going away...lol. I know, you are right, your words actually make me feel a little better.

What was the reason some didn't get to see the anatomy lab?

Yeah, that was somewhat disappointing, but understandable because they were having a lab. It was not the end of the world for me because I have seen several before, but it still would have been nice. It is probably hard to make it available for touring three days in row.

On our interview day they were having lab too, we went in and got to see the groups dissecting for about five minutes. I think it was our student leaders, they kind of forced our way into anatomy and histology lab while class was in session.

Done and done.

I guess our tour guide was not as willing to do that. We did see a histology class going on, that looked cool. I thought it was cool how you could check out a pelvis, skull, etc. from the library to study with. I would be using that a lot. I know OU does not have that amenity and my buddy who is a first year wished they could do that at OU when I told him.

I study sometimes at OU's library and there is an area to check out models (I saw a couple of full skeletons, don't know what all they have available), but I don't think it has as much as OSU does. I bought some cheaper models for undergrad anatomy and was thinking about buying more detailed ones, but I figure I'll just live at the library so no reason.

OU has check out, but it has a room they have to stay in. With OSU, you're free to roam the building and even take them home! That seemed very attractive.

So, OSU has a full human skeleton, right? That's really cool and weird at the same time, haha😀

OSU has many full skeletons, there is an entire room with every model you can think of. Heck there is a inmate that donated his body that was sliced into sections that you can check out and study. Included is his ultra cool gold tooth!
I have a full atriculated skeleton in my High School Science Class "I teach" don't know how we got it but she was here when I arrived and have used it quite a bit.

That collection of 1" slices of the inmates body was by far the coolest thing I've seen in a while. Each piece even has muscle, vessels, bone, and tissue labeled for easy id. I've been telling everyone I know interested in science about it. I think every inmate should donate their body to science - after they're through with it of course lol

Still would've liked to have seen gross anatomy lab at OSU though. Sad Face

I am interviewing the day after tomorrow, and and I was wondering if you guys could help me with something. It seems like they tend to ask a lot of ethical questions - "how would you handle a non-compliant patient", etc.......so I was wondering how did anybody answer these? I have a general idea, but do they want you to outline a specific plan? What is a "wrong" answer for this kind of question? Thanks!

The interviewers seemed really receptive to my answer, here it is:
I first defined the patient as non- life threatned, then the interviewer outlined a specific case. I responded by saying i would have to find out why the patient is not following medical advice. Is it they don't trust me? If that is the case I would be happy to recommend another physician for another opinion. Or is it that they have problems preventingthem, such as financial or lack of support. If that is the case I can refer to a support group. Or is it that they just don't care? That is the hardest one to deal with since I would be limited in ways I could address that.
I basically told them that many situations could be relatively unique and that I would have to spend a little extra time eith the patient trying to figure out what is wrong? Isn't that what osteopathic medicine is about, the basis for the "whole" patient concept
I think they just want to see that you aren't stuck up and arrogant, like saying screw them if the won't follow my advice because I am always right

So as the days progress I get more and more nervous to check the site for huge acceptance postings! I am curious if they are going to consider the prospective students that are interviewing now before they make final decisions on the 11, 12, 13 round? Who knows I am just trying to be patient but it's driving me crazy!

I would think that each round is considered by itself, but I dont know, they may group them.

They group them, depending on how many have interviewed until the committee meets. Also, anyone waitlisted will be reviewed again each additional time the committee meets.

As to the ethical question, my answer was similar to Just One however I brought in some perspective from the Pharmacy Tech aspect of my life.

I said something along the lines of that my job as a tech has shown me many different types of non-compliance including financial, lazyness, and just no motivation. Most can be resolved in two ways. Financial reasons can typically be solved 85% of the time by switching drugs to ones with generic alternatives (such as lipitor to zocor which has simvastatin as a generic, both drugs are same class and act in the same mechanism too). That alone saves most people 20 - 50 on a copay or if you do the walmary generics, its 4$ a month. One people have access to medications at an affordable rate, you have to get the patient to understand their disease/condition and why they need to be compliant with the therapy. Most patients I see tell me they were told their cholesterol was high and to take this drug, the doctor doesn't explain the diseases caused by high cholesterol or other conditions that may arise from it.

I did some more explaining, but I had good, solid feed-back from both of my interviewers with this explanation.

My understanding is that each group is judged on its own.

They prob let each interview group rank candidates and then adcom looks at rankings with their own perceptions and make offers to those who overwhelmingly match, waitlist those who kinda match, and reject those who they feel don't fit the program for whatever reasons.

Best deal is that the waitlist is reviewed each time they meet though and not lost forever in a pile!

So, they actually completely reject people at this point?

Yep typically OSU keeps their waitlist below 100 and they cut that waitlist to a final list of 20 to 30 in may. If they only fill 92 slots and and waitlist 100 tht is 192 slots and they do well over 192 interviews.

I would bet you have to be completely opposite the person they had in mind from your application in order to be rejected at this juncture. They wouldn't waste an early interview spot on someone they didnt already like on paper.

My luck - thats me I'm talking about lol. Its cruel how your mind plays tricks on you when your patience is being tested

You've already seen a couple of really good answers to this one. I actually got a variation of this question that was framed up as a patient that had been under my care for a long time with whom I developed a pretty deep relationship. Now that patient had decided not to follow my plan of treatment and this would lead to him becoming very sick and ultimately dying.

I started with a discussion on talking to the patient to uncover some reasons after which my interviewer pretty much said, "The patient just doesn't want to do it anymore. What do you do then?" At this point, I saw the question change from a non-compliance question to an end of life ethical question. My answer was that I would then take the time to discuss the consequences of the patient's decision in order to prepare him for what's to come, and to start exploring some options for end of life care if the patient still chose to quit his treatments.

The interviewer then followed up with a question about whether I would let this affect my personal life or would I be able to "leave it at the office."

I hope you are right. What is confusing about this whole process is that I know a couple of very qualified applicants (one had 3.8 GPA and 24 MCAT) from last season that were waitlisted and ultimately denied last year with higher stats than some of the early interviews this year. I think timing is critical in this process. I kept telling myself that someone had to be denied in the first round, possibly could it be me? I think this whole process is set up just to play with our minds

Anyone out there interview today, or going tomorrow or Friday? Let us know how it goes and any info.

I have a feeling that we (2nd rounders) will find out early next because they will want to meet and talk about the interviews from this week and make the decision before Thanksgiving. I hope Im wrong and we find out tomorrow....or Friday.....this waiting game is no fun at all.

"Ok..(a second year) my coworker's sister says she thinks we are going to find out tomorrow or Friday,"....This is what my wife tells me today after work. Of course this is all speculative and she had no other details and even if she did, I think we all already knew this anyway. I am working on some other leads.
