OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Out of curiosity, when do you have to turn it in? Ours was Dec 15, just wondering if yours is later or the same. Also thought I'd let you know it was nice weather on the golf course yesterday

December 21st. Does the physical need to be turned in as well? It didn't look like it did.

Oh...jealous, my wife made me put up the christmas tree and wash the car, so no such luck for me. What course? There was little wind which is always nice. Did you see that there is an OSU Health Science Center golf tournament in June....I forsee an incoming student team, if it is not too expensive.

I spoke to someone today that interviewed on Friday the 20th, she said they were told they that OSU was going to try and let them know before Thanksgiving. Thats awful quick.

Hope for some of the others that interviewed last round to get the call. Right?

No the physical and titers can wait. Kickingbird in Edmond.

I already have everything started and just got my titers results. Two vaccine boosters in my future 🙁 my measles and chicken pox were slightly below threshold. I have to wait till february though to do a tb test

however gl to all those, should get calls tomorrow or Wednesday!

Where did you get them done and how much? I called my insurance and they won't cover them unless it is coded for exposure or something along those lines. One clinic told me it would be $1000 and my primary care won't call me back with an estimate.

Mine was covered under a copay of 10% per lab plus PCP copay. Not sure of the bill, but my PCP is 15 and I was told to expect around 50-60. I am frightened you were told $1000, seems slightly outrageous. However, I do have to follow up with the state health dept to get my MMR and Varicella boosters since my PCP doesn't keep live vaccines in stock.

For those of you in the OKC area, I've used Integris Employee Health for this kind of thing in the past. You don't have to be an employee. I've had a varicella titer, Hep B vacc, and TB skin tests done there. Plus, the longest I've ever had to wait was 10 minutes. I'll probably go here again unless my wife's work can hook me up with a better deal. I have a price list from 2008. If you're interested, you can PM me and I can point you in the right direction. Oh - I am in no way affiliated with Integris. Just thought I'd throw this out there to help.

A November 20 interviewee I know got the call today!

Definitly follow up to find out what went wrong, sorry to hear it.

don't get down rejection happens osu really will tell you what and how to improve. remember with as many applicants as they have someone will be overlooked. sorry it was you but last year it was me and I still am waiting on a interview.

Now I'm nervous and don't want to go home and check the mail....

Interviewed on Nov 20, got the call this morning!!! See you all in the fall!

Alright, I got my letter relegating me to the waitlist today.

I called and talked to Lindsey - always super helpful. Here's the skinny:

They want to see my grades for the Fall - upper level science classes Bacteriology and BioChem specifically. This semester will be 12 more hours of A's, all sciences, as of right now - so I'm not sweating the grades. I just hope there's still room! She said that the adcom would meet in mid-January to review Fall grade updates. There goes stress free holidays. Sad Face!

Also, she said that they do not give out the total number already in the class, nor a percentage of the class filled, nor the number on the waitlist.

Before I forget - congrats abflexer and Dr MRL!

Just thought I'd give my $0.02. If you are waitlisted this early, I would imagine that you are in good shape on the waitlist. From what I've heard, there is lots of movement from the waitlist in late April due to the deadline for deposit reimbursement. I would imagine if you were called in this early to interview and are waitlisted, they like you but are just testing the waters. If for some reason you have one holdup area, making it to the final waitlist is still possible. Keep your spirits up, it's not over til it's over.

I also got the waitlist letter, but I haven't called them yet.

I got the letter today and I was REJECTED! Time to prepare to dominate next year! 😕

Sorry bud! GL next application cycle. My advisement is don't make excuses, take as many advanced biology courses as you can. On their application page, OSU says you need atleast 3-5 upperdivision classes and more the better, all with good grades.

Interviewed on Nov 20, got the call this morning!!! See you all in the fall!
Congrats, join up with facebook and see you at accepted student day.

IN! I'm ecstatic!!!!😀
Congrats to you! ditto above ^

Sound good, keep striving and try to get more shadowing. Do above what they expect and make them be surprised.

I also got the waitlist letter, but I haven't called them yet.

Once you find out what is holding you back, do as i advised RevDoc. I look forward to seeing you both at accepted student day.

One a side note, im excited there are even more accepted students now. Somehow two facebook groups were created, so I am in the process of merging them to keep people from becoming confused. Gl to those on the waitlist!

So me and Beef are the only ones waitlisted so far?
Anyone else out there on the waitlist?

Anyone have a rough estimate of acceptances so far from people you know? It seems like the number is around 9 and they're on here posting.

Guestimating from interview amounts and the known trends. I put there to be 35 to 45 acceptances, 15 to 25 waitlist and a few rejects

I know of a couple that are not on sdn. According to what they told us on our interview day, 18-20 should be accepted from the first round

I just wanted to jump on here and say congratulations once again to all who have been accepted. To those who were waitlisted, keep in mind that it's still early and there's a lot of time left in this application cycle. Just try to relax and enjoy the holiday tomorrow. Hopefully, everything will work out how it's supposed to. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

So, christmas is around the corner and family is asking what I would want. Since I really don't need or want much that I don't have I started thinking (which usually gets me in trouble), OSU says that 1st year expenses include $1000 worth of medical equipment. Some of you may see where I'm going with this. If I spread it out over two christmas (this one and next year) I could chip away at that. My question is what instruments do you think are required as a student?

I wanted to say congrats to everyone who has been accepted thus far. To those who are waitlisted or rejected do not give up hope. I was waitlisted and found out 2 weeks before classes started. I was scheduled to go to another DO school, but gladly changed when I received the acceptance letter. I have a friend who was accepted after being rejected 3 times-so do not give up hope. I suggest taking upper level sciences courses, volunteer more, and try to obtain a job in the medical field-whether it be as a transporter, tech, etc.

To the above question about medical equipment-I strongly suggest that you not waste your money or Christmas presents on the equipment. All you need is a good stethoscope. They request you spend like $1000 in equipment that you use only a few times in lab. You can easily use your partners-you do not need your own. Just my 2 cents-you can do what you want, but I promise you will not be lost without the equipment, because everyone is going to buy it and not use it.

If anyone has any questions you can PM if you want.

Good luck to everyone.

What instruments is it that they recommend that you don't use? Otoscope, ophthalmoscope, or what specifically?

I just thought we needed to get a stethoscope, thats all I was planning on buying. What else do they ask us to buy that could add up to a $1000?

Don't know for sure but I talked to another student (3rd yr) that said the same as Mjs12DO. She said having it for your own is more for studying for a practical, but the skills lab has all the equipment so you just practice in the skills lab. Only thing for sure need to get is stethescope. I absolutly hate the idea of borrowing equipment (from my previous career, having to buy your own tools, I have just over $50,000 in tools and when other people asked to borrow it is an industry no-no). So I would rather spend the money than borrow from another student (why should they be responsible for me?). Yet if I can use the schools equipment I think that is different. So I don't know what I'll do.

They recommend you buy an ophthalmoscope and otoscope-The fancy panoptic type with a lithium battery. They have instruments in the labs-the ones like every doctor's office have on the walls; so you can use them or use a friends. And whatever you do-Do not buy all of the books they recommend-ask your mentor-who will a second year what you need. Most books can be checked out for a few hours from the library if you need them. There are exceptions-There are some books which you absolutely must have-but this is rare. I'm just speaking from experience about spending more money than you need to.

What about a computer? I have been hearing mixed reviews about buying a tablet pc

I am a mac user and do not need a new computer right now (my two year old mac is well above minimum specs OSU has, nice thing about mac) but am a little hesitant about the compatibility issues. I think I am going one of two routes: 1. buy a tablet to have greater functionality with school programs and the function of writing on slides or notes. Then transfer to my mac to be used as the primary computer when not in class. 2. install windows on the mac to have easier access and buy a usb pen tablet (can range from $70-300).

I think it is going to be a long 9 months before school starts.

I didn't buy a tablet. Some people swear by them, but most people I know that bought them did not use the tablet function that often. I think a decent laptop will do just fine. Yeah I know it seems like time will drag on until you start classes, but try to enjoy your time. First semester is pretty rough-balance is the key, and it took me some time to figure that out. There is a such thing as trying to study too much and stressing yourself out beyond belief. You guys will do great, but enjoy your free time now.

Im thinking ill probably get a Macbook pro myself and use bootcamp and dual boot windows 7 with OSX

I dont think the touchscreen will be imperative for myself, however I will most likely invest as you mentioned in a pen tablet for when needed.

I have two MacBook pros and love them. Have you heard if windows 7 is for sure compatible? I haven't checked into it. With the Vista debacle I'm waiting to see about 7.

I third that, so are you both for sure OSU? or still holding out for OU at all?
since my only offer is from OSU, all of my current plans involve OSU.

I have a 3+ year old MacBook that I just bought a new battery for. I've got Vista running on Bootcamp (no debacles in my experience) and Fedora Core Linux running on Parallels (to satisfy my inner computer geek). I dig it. I think I'll just use it and determine whether tablet capability is needed once I get into classes. If so, I'll probably just buy one of the USB pen tablets as well.

I used a macbook all four years of undergrad (loved it) and then my wife and I bought pc's (sold the mac) for gradschool two years ago, because everyone told us the macs would not be compatable. What I know now is that usually when someone makes that statement they are incorrect. You can make anything work, it just might take a few more steps. In addition to many things, I just love the battery life of macs, my pc is a joke when it comes to battery life (I am assuming this is an issue when you are using your computer all day every day). Maybe OSU has plugs everywhere, i don't know though.

If they did use bootcamp in january with the beta of 7, I am sure it can be done now. As to the debacles you talk about, windows 7 is much more stable. I have it running in triple boot with xp and ubuntu on my gaming rig (amd phenom II 955 x4 @ 3.8 ghz, 8 gigs of ram, dual radeon 4890 graphics, giga-byte mobo, running 4 raptor HD in raid 5.)

I have never owned a mac before, but after my debacles with both dell and hp laptops, I am going to go ahead get a mac.... But i am definitely waiting till after next june because its a given that Apple will update the line again in June with new specs and all.

They also have updated the macbook pros in september/october (a month after I bought each of my macbook pros)

To those of you waitlisted, would you mind sharing your stats/experiences?
