PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not necessarily. Luck of the draw probably. Its much easier to get accepted earlier than later due to obvious reasons. So individuals with lesser stats/credentials that interview early almost guarantee their acceptance. I interviewed at 4 schools early and got all 4 acceptances. This was my only "late" or later interview. How people get chosen before others... well I do not think there is any rhyme or reason as some would say.

I agree. I regret getting my application in a little late here--I interviewed on 2/1 so not much before you. After getting myself worked up today, there ended up not being any mail from PCOM--I guess another day of stress/anxiety is in store.

Well keep your cool. Someone here interviewed late Jan and got accepted, so you were closer to January than me lol.

Do you have acceptances anywhere else?

32 M 3.86.

Deferred. Interviewed on Feb 3rd.
I guess it is better than a rejection?

Deferred decision, interviews 2/13. I am accepted at another school, however a PCOM acceptance would be incredible. Here goes another 2 months of waiting.

Decision deferred. Did anyone actually get an acceptance this round of letters?

Deferred a lot of great candidates... Should have looked at us earlier! lol.

From the looks of it, everyone had been "delayed decision" since 1/23. I interviewed on 1/26 and got the same letter. Love the school and really would like an acceptance sooner than later.

Agreed. Right now I am set on CCOM, but the drop in tuition going to PCOM would be nice 😉. Both are great programs... just different prices haha

I received a 9,6,9 (24Q) and have a 3.9 GPA. Did anyone here have a verbal with a 6 or less and get an interview or admitted to PCOM?

I hear great things about CCOM. Not to discourage you from PCOM but some more open seats would be nice. 😉

I know two people who go to CCOM (my cousin and a classmate from a pre-req class), one is a first year, the other a second year.

From what they are both saying, I would check out other schools rather than CCOM. Sounds like that school has sort of over extended itself and is thin on resources for my two CCOM-ers.

And calling itself "Chicago College OM" is misleading, as it's a solid 45 minute drive to downtown, and that's when the highway is actually running smoothly, which as a Chicago resident, I can tell you is a rarity.

Well I appreciate your advice, but from interviewing there and talking to many students both at the interview and here on SDN, I am extremely comfortable with my decision to attend. Actually reading your post, well that was the first time I have heard any of that. Plus, CCOM, used to be in downtown Chicago before it moved to Downers Grove. Is it supposed to change its name cause it moved?!?!

Heard about this so I thought I'd clear things up.

So I don't really know what to say to that. It's almost laughable. I don't even know what they could mean by "thin on resources", classrooms? parking? teachers? rotations?

Naw we are not thin on resources at all. In fact the class of 2015 had it the best of any so far. They got the sweet new anatomy lab on the top floor of the new science building with computers right next to their cadavers to look up whatever their little heart desires. The parking garage got redone last year to solve the parking issues on campus people were talking about. I've yet to hear any issues of rotations from my previous classmates who are now 3rd years and I live with 4 of them.

Also in my opinion CCOM is one of the few schools to increase their class size when they could actually accommodate it. They went from like ~180 to 200 for the class of 2013 which is nothing. AZCOM doubled it's size from 150 to 300 for the class of 2012.

They're just blowin smoke.

I started following this thread before my interview and found it somewhat helpful and informative. I interviewed on 2/16 and I received a deferred decision on Monday, 2/27.

Does anyone know If "deferred decision people" usually have to wait until April 24th for a final decision? Is it possible to hear sooner? I just don't know how we're expected to wait when other schools are asking for deposits before then. PCOM is my first choice but I can't turn down an acceptance from another school with no other guarantees..

Unfortunately it will be a matter of putting down deposits and then losing them if you choose to go to a different school. It is quite costly but the way that look at it, in the scheme of things a few thousand is only a small part of total tuition. Better to have acceptances and spot reserved than hang your hat on one school.

Correct. I like to think of deposits as rounding errors in your total debt amount lol

I agree, and I would happily add that to my financial aid and subsequent debt, but I don't have access to that money yet. This deposit has to come from my pocket! My checking account can't cover multiple deposits... For now I'm hoping I will hear something in the next few weeks and if not I'll have to figure something out.

Does anyone know if it possible to hear anything earlier than April?

The letter says a decision will be made by that date in April. I think we can only hope that the decision is sooner and favorable.

I looked at the last years threads. And it seems like most people hear back near that date. +\- 2 days from april 24th is my best bet. Not sooner, unless bunch of people decides to free up the spots by withdrawing months before the deposit deadline.

Don't go to the brunch--that is if you've already decided. It is pointless. You sit with like 8 other people at a table but you're at the table the whole time, not too much mingling happens.

Yes! Interviewing this Wednesday. Are you interviewing here?
no, unfortunately. I went to grad school at pcom and really wanted to go for med school, but they haven't gotten back to me so i'm thinking it's not very likely right now...

Does anyone know when the admissions committee meets next?

do they send out any rejections? or just the deferred that everyone seems to be getting?

I know of people who have recently received rejections so I guess they are doing that as well. I interviewed 2/22 and still have not heard a thing.

Hmm so I guess I'm getting a silent rejection from PCOM because I've been complete since mid October and haven't heard anything. I only applied to 3 DO schools, and I got into the other 2. This was my top choice though, so I'm a little disappointed. I guess PCOM is one of the more competitive schools?

It is competitive. Call admissions. They should at least get back to you.

I've been complete since September or October, as well. Found out months ago (after I called) that my adviser letter hadn't been marked as received yet, although it had been there for months. Haven't heard since then but that clerical error cost me 2-3 months of time.

Can someone please tell me when does the admission committee meets next?
Interviewed on March 14.

Interviewed on 3/5, have not received a letter yet. Just got an invitation in the mail to the "Class of 2016 Admitted Student Welcome Brunch" however...

I also interviewed 3/5 and am waiting to hear back, supposedly admissions recently met so shouldn't be long? Let us know if anyone hears back

I second the "don't go to the welcome brunch". You go right upstairs and sit down at a table with 8 other people. You never leave the table until the end ... Meeting a total of 8 people. It is really short and not that exciting. Just my advice. I had friends that came in from all over the country for a few hours, to meet a handful of people. They don't tell you anything that you won't learn at orientation. Save your money ! You will definitely wish you did later !!

Oh ! Also my last bit of advice to incoming students. Buy the board review series books (brs) for every course (anatomy , biochem , cardio ect) and follow along with that as you learn in class. You can take notes in there or whatever you would like. When it comes time for boards you will remember those pages in the board review book and..... it will be so so so helpful when you are studying for boards. Trust me it is the way to go ! Killing two birds with one stone. It will also help you to clear up any questions you may have

While I agree flying in for the brunch is unnecessary, I wouldn't avoid it if you're in the area. Yes, you may sit at one table the entire time, but you've met a few other people in your class and will have people to hang with when orientation begins. Knowing someone before this journey starts is going to decrease the anxiety level a great deal. You already have enough to worry about, not knowing a face in the crowd shouldn't be added to that anxiety.

Don't really agree with this--not saying it doesn't work for some people, but I don't remember a goddamn thing about them. My classmates all use FA and BRS for everything. FA is good to make sure you're not missing major chunks of info for boards. I use class notes and ONLY when I don't understand something do I resort to a book--and I've been doing well.

Not saying that atpnrg is wrong, not at all. I am saying that there are going to be seventy people telling you what to do and not any one of them is more correct (usually). You'll find out what works best.

I agree with this even though I said don't go. If you're around, go and meet some people. Don't drive more than an hour to do so.

"Smoking your classmates" in class is very different than your performance on boards. You may humbly agree that you are naturally gifted .. but I am just trying to give some general advice that has helped a lot of my friends and I. Maybe try to be a little more open to other methods as well

Ok, I probably should've put that 'i'm doing very well' over 'smoking my classmates'. My point is that everyone has their own method. Additionally, I have many friends who say that 'studying for boards' during your first year (I know you're not specifically saying that) is next to worthless.
