Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm starting to get worried...I was complete before you and I haven't heard anything back yet..

A lot of people have been complete since the first day secondaries came out. I see you posted this before in another thread. Just relax and stop asking everyone their stats. It will only drive you crazy.

You guys are crazy. Its only October. Schools interview through May. The cycle is roughly 22% over.. That means hundreds of acceptances have not yet been handed out. Go outside 🙂

Thats so true but its so hard to not be worried lol

Also a bit of a crap shoot - over 7,000 applications, they interview a little over 600 for 26? places. If I get an interview I am going to play the lottery!

Do we find out today for those of us that interviewed in late sept?!!

My guess would be some time this week. Tomorrow is 3 weeks from interview date, and last few years its taken 2.5 weeks. Not to mention today is the day MD schools send out their first wave of acceptances

I guess it's possible, but I know PCOM sends out acceptance letters so not everybody would be notified on the same date. It would pretty much depend on where you live.

Just received an ii but I am not going.
Already accepted to another school.

I completed my application in August/September. PCOM is one of my top choices. Is it too early to send them an update letter/letter of intent?

Nope. I just got an ii today, and it was via email. When I logged on a minute ago, nothing on the portal had changed.

When did you complete? IS? Stats?

What is the secret to getting some II love from this school?

OOS, everything in on 9/13 but "complete" email on 9/20. cGPA 3.45, sGPA3.5, MCAT 25 (6PS/10V/9BS), very non-traditional.

I have no secrets. Although....I did send an email about a week ago saying that I was going to be in Philly the beginning of November, and if I was invited to interview, maybe I could do it then?! My ii email just gave me a date (middle of Nov), which I can't attend because I'll be out of the country for a couple weeks. I called her back, and she just had someone cancel for 11/8, so I swiped it. Just FYI-you can only reschedule once...then it's set in stone.

Congratz on the ii! I was completed a week after you so this makes me feel a little better that I might still have a chance here. Share with us your interview experience afterwards xD good luck!!

I submitted my secondary app about 2 weeks ago or so and haven't heard anything back since, except for the receipt of them receiving my secondary and application fee. I am IS through the DIMER program (DE resident). 3.97 cGPA, 3.95 sGPA, 27 MCAT (8/10/9). Highest recommendations from my school's pre-med committee. Hoping I hear back soon.

Was anyone else expecting to get a letter back this past week with acceptance/rejection? I was pretty sure that they said the ADCOM met the second week of October and from past years, it seems they meet on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Did anyone in the Philly area receive anything yet? I loved the school so much on my interview day and the suspense is killing me!

I'm legacy and IS, so that helps. From what I remember from my interview day, one of the other people in my group was in another program at PCOM, one was international, one was URM, and I believe everyone else was a non-trad. I don't necessarily think there's a "secret," it just seemed like they really do take the idea of a holistic review seriously. Which is what I like so much! The interview is very low stress, open file, and conducted by two people in a panel-ish setting. Honestly it was one of the more enjoyable conversations I've had in a long time. Good luck!!

Got the complete email one of the very first days but crickets since. Would love to attend here

I heard they take your best sections from different scores to determine your composite MCAT score. is that true?:

Did you receive a complete email or just an email saying "Acknowledgement: PCOM Supplemental Received"? I haven't received a complete email yet, but on the portal it says they have received everything they need.

They look at the whole score - not just the best. My friend said that the Committee likes to see the scores go up each time it is taken as opposed to a downward spiral

No complete emails, we have to go in and check to see if they have everything, it can be confusing at times

Does the portal ever say complete, or does it just show you what you sent in?

I just submitted my secondary today. It took me about a month to get it completed...is that bad? Am I too late? Thanks!

I have a 25 MCAT (8P, 8V, 9B), 3.75 cGPA, 3.6 sGPA.

I have over 150 hours of volunteering, leadership roles, teacher roles, etc. Also have great LORs.

Do you guys think I have a chance considering my low MCAT and that I am an OOS applicant?

Also, what type of classes would count for the literature prerequisite? Would something like a research class or linguistics class work?

I would doubt that either would work. Think more like "Intro to Literature", "Masterpieces of World Lit", "Academic Writing About Lit", "Literature of the United States" (or Britain, etc), "Neoclassical Lit", "Poetry", etc. (these are all examples at my school). Anything in the English department that focuses on literature or lit and writing about it, should work. Linguistics is another subject entirely.

I'm an IL resident, have a 25 MCAT (8P, 8V, 9B), 3.8 cGPA, 3.65 sGPA. Took the MCAT once before. Got a 23 (7P, 7V, 9B).

Also, I think as long as you have a good personal statement and your application is otherwise stellar, those stats shouldn't hold you back. I have an interview the beginning of November, and my MCAT is an unbalanced 25 with a 3.55 GPA. I'm OOS as well. Good luck!

Sorry for posting three time in a row....BUT-

Does anyone know the interview style? Group? MMI? Individual? Open or closed file? Laid back or more "grilling" questions, etc? I interview 11/8, and am getting a little nervous...just want to be prepared!

It's one candidate with a panel of interviewers (two or three). I had one medical student, one physician, and someone from admissions. I was very nervous going in, but I felt relaxed pretty early on. I didn't get any questions that felt like being "grilled"; it was pretty much as expected. It's open file, so they will know some of your application beforehand, but you're probably better off assuming that they haven't. I got one ethical question--just make sure you take your time if you get one of those, and show your thought process. Other than that, prepare to enjoy the day. The interview is the last part of your day, so put it out of your mind so you can take in all PCOM has to offer. Good luck! :luck:

Congrats on the acceptance!! Mind sharing how far you live from Philly? Or do you have any idea when it was sent?

I heard from Admissions that all letters were sent out today for those who interviewed last month. My school is about two hours away from Philly and students received their letters today.

Soo nervous! Waiting on letter of acceptance/rejection/hold form them.
School received AACOMAS app/Sent supplemental August 23
Turned in secondary ~Aug 30th
When they sent complete status/received everything Sept 23
Interview Invite Sept 25th
Interview date Oct 14th

Stats 3.31 overall/Science 3.29 MCAT highest 27 took afterwards and got lower 🙁

Second time year applying- Only difference is now I am in a SMP at Midwestern

Only worry is that PCOM may put my app on hold until they receive my grades from the first quarter :-/

It's a 2 on 1 open file interview. PM me if you have questions

I think I'm going to send a letter of intent, anyone know where to send them?

I would imagine office of admissions, I think you can also email them and they can add it to your file. I'm not 100% sure tho just cause I never sent one.

I used airbnb. Found a very nice place only a few blocks from campus and it was pretty cheap too

I completed in August/September. OOS 27MCAT, 3.78 s/cGPA, URM... does this mean game over for me? Any strategies?

Are people who interviewed in late sept receiving letters today?

what're the statistics of applicants/interviews/acceptances?

I'm just wondering what the odds are of acceptance post interview
