Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Usually takes 2-3 weeks to get an answer after an interview

And for all the people waiting to get IIs, remember that it's still super early!! I know people who got interviews in January, February and March last year.

Yeah but people who got those ii's in spring probably submitted their secondary app way late like November or December. I sorta doubt someone who submitted in August got an ii in spring...but hey I hope I'm wrong

I was just browsing here because I was debating on whether or not to complete the secondary and came across your post. Just wanted to say I dig that you like Zelda.

Thanks! Definitely a classic. 🙂 I've promised myself I can play again when/if I am accepted, haha.
If you're considering applying, PCOM is definitely worth it, IMO. Great school in one of the best cities for medicine, and students were constantly coming up to us during interview day to wish us luck. Definitely a happy group. Best of luck whatever you decide!

Someone told me that PCOM is a legacy school (she heard it from her pre-med advisor who told her to not waste her money on an application)... meaning students usually have family members that also go/went there... has anyone else heard this?... I already applied 2 months ago because I thought this was a great school... but I wonder if there is any truth to it and if it could be a reason that I may not hear anything...

On my interview, I think both student tour guides may have had siblings who were also in the DO program.

I am interested to know if there is any truth to this. I don't know why my friend's pre-med advisor would lie to her.

Nope. I am the first in a huge extended family to go to med school and I was in PCOMs first ii group. Its crap lol good luck!

Okay... well hopefully I will get an interview invite soon. *fingers crossed* 🙂

Nothing but silence. I really want to interview here.

I never even received a complete e-mail, but everything shows up on my portal so I'm guessing I am complete?

Its only October.. They will interview through May

Yeah, you think they interview applicants that were complete in August/Sept up til May? I feel like those getting interviewed that late in Spring applied a lot later. Just speculating

Hope the early applicants still have a shot too! I really would like to at least have a chance to interview here and my secondary was completed a long while ago too. Guess we just have to keep waiting 🙁

ii this morning. the next wave might have been sent out

Having a relative alum is definitely a boost, but most of the students are first-generation.

ooo nice, that's pretty soon! well good luck to you! 🙂

-I got a secondary invite from PCOM on 7/30, and have yet to complete it, is it too late to apply to DO schools at this point?
-What's the time frame from sending in the secondary app --> getting a complete email --> interview or rejection?

My stats: MCAT: 28, GPA: 3.6

I was complete 9/11 and I still haven't heard anything... I completed my LORs and secondary application almost a month before then... but my payment was lost in the mail...

I think other people who also submitted on the first day are still waiting to hear... it may be random... they interview until March... so I would complete it, if you are really interested... PCOM seems like a great school... I would be very happy if I were given the opportunity to be a medical student here...

I interviewed 9/25 and am anxiously waiting as well! Hope to hear soon 🙂

Just interviewed here. Was very impressed with the facilities and how warm and happy everyone was. Students were very eager to come talk to us even ones that weren't part of admissions just walking to class. Everything seems top notch and interview people were very nice. I had a panel of two. They asked me what I thought of the current healthcare system what the role of a doctor was etc. most typical open ended med school interview questions

Has anyone successfully used their fee waiver to pay for their secondary fee? PCOM's page out of the College Information Book says they accept secondary fee waivers but I haven't heard of anyone using it....Has anyone called yet and been successful or unsuccessful in getting their fee waived?

I would say yes but it's still the minority. There is a good number of people who had family members go there but the majority did not.

My friend got the waiver. He called and they told him to send an email request and he got an email they would check and if they had his name he could get the waiver. I guess you just have to ask and try - no harm in asking anyway

I interviewed approximately the same day (9/24/(2008!)) and found out on 10/15. It was awesome to have the admission process over so early.

That's so good to hear! Did you end up going to PCOM?

I just called and they told me the same thing- thanks for the response!

Does anyone know if they are friendly to "in the area" emails? I live in Alaska, and flights are ridiculously expensive, so I'd like to consolidate travel and interviews if I can! I'll be in Philly the beginning of November, but I don't want to sound pushy or anything!

Coming from Alaska, I don't think they can hold it against you for asking, even if they are unable to accommodate.

I called them up and they switched my interview date no problem - the admissions office seems very friendly and willing to work with you.

If you have a LOR from your advisor, does it need to specifically state in the letter that he/she is the advisor?
