Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Thanks! I just logged in and everything is received but my secondary! What does this mean? Was it never submitted? Should I resubmit? Man, I'm shocked.

That is exactly how mine is. I am beginning to wonder if I forgot to hit the submit button....

Yeah, I know right. I'm starting to think I forget to press the submit button as well. Did you, by any chance, call them? Maybe I should call them and take the risk of being on the blacklist...haha..

Did anyone who received an interview invite also have a blank next to secondary?

I called last week. They told me it could take 30 days with the high volume of applicants. It has been more than 30 days so IDK....

Guess we have to wait till the new year. I'll let you know if I get any updates from them. I hope someone who got an interview responds though so we have an idea.

On another note, I forget to include the email when I sent my application fee, and it says in notes next to application fee "no email." Bad?

No email doesn't mean anything. Disregard it.

You could literally wait months to hear anything so just sit back and relax.

Just to let you all know, I didn't get an interview invitation from PCOM until 2 months after I was complete.

Too much to go through, but is there any way to check the status of your application? or do I just call? I sent in my application in September and never received a complete email or any status update. Do they send out complete emails? Any response will help! Thanks!

Has anyone heard any post interview responses recently? Waiting 3.5 weeks and wanted to see if that was standard or correlated with anything.

I interviewed December 2nd and haven't heard anything yet.

When were you complete? I've been complete for a while now and haven't heard anything from them. I assume that I'm on hold pre-interview :/ What were your stats like?

so I guess the time to worry is after two months? 2 months for me will be December 28th right smack during the holidays....ahhhh this wait sucks

I was "complete" 10/23. I sent in my application and everything in late August, and secondary in early October. They were just super slow with processing my stuff. I have a 27 MCAT, 3.97 cGPA and sGPA, Delaware resident (so pcom is my in state do school through dimer) and URM here if that matters.

I just got the email recently with the log in information. PCOM is my top choice and I really want to go there. Does it make sense to send a letter of intent detailing my desire to be a medical student at PCOM? I know it's getting late in the cycle, that's why I want to send a letter of intent, so hopefully they can look at my application and consider me! cGPA ~3.75, sGPA ~3.6, MCAT 25, OOS.

Any advice, especially from those who have gotten in, will help!

same I have yet to hear from them after being complete (10/28) I want to send a letter of intent but I don't know if it's appropriate at this time.

So I believe PCOM just sent out some acceptances this weekend.
My timeline: I was complete early October, received an II Dec. 3rd, interviewed Dec. 11th, and just received an acceptance this Saturday, Dec. 21
They told us we'd hear back by New Years, but I'm still amazed at the turn-around!
Best wishes for everyone!

That is very quick. I interviewed December 2nd and haven't gotten a letter yet. I am hoping either today or tomorrow.

Are current med students required to volunteer a certain amount of hours?

Interviewed Dec. 9th and just got my acceptance this past saturday as well!

You know, it seems like those that get accepted are getting their letters in two weeks. Has anyone gotten accepted after waiting 3+ weeks?

My acceptance letter came just over 3 weeks from my interview. I think it mainly depends on when when you interview (ie: if you interview the day after the committee meet, it might take a bit longer). Good luck 🙂

You realize it is all based on when the adcom meets. Either you land on the early end or at the back of their decision making schedule. All depends where your interview lands.

But how would that explain people interviewing later than others while receiving letters before those same others?

I am just curious of how their committee functions and makes the decisions.

They might live farther away. PCOM sends out acceptances through the mail, therefore the farther you live the longer it's going to take to get your letter in the mail.

Just a guess, but perhaps an individual was borderline and was pushed back to the next adcom meeting to be reevaluated.

I have called in a few times and have been treated with nothing but respect. Also I have quoted what I need and state that I checked and then told them what I felt the problem was. I think when we don't hear what we want and it is getting late in the process we think they are being rude but they are being short and concise with probably five lines holding and thousands of applications to get through. I think we need to cut them some slack, my friend said they are the busiest office he has ever seen.

For those of you who didn't have a committee letter, did you send three letters of recommendation letter from all science faculty members? I'm really confused. Late last night, I received an e-mail saying I had missing material and when I called today, they said my physician letter didn't work...that it had to be three.. I looked at the website, it said that if you don't have a committee letter, you can have three seperate letters with 2/3 being science. Now, I'm just confused. The woman I spoke to was also pretty rude, and kept cutting me off and saying things like "you're obviously missing something" "you have to have three so you should work on that" etc. Wasn't very pleasant, at all.

You are correct 2 letters from science faculty and one from a physician. 4 months ago I had the same problem and was given the same run around and the lady was rude and didn't want to take the time to pull up the letters of rec to find out the problem. I had contacted several schools that receive high volumes of applications and they were quite polite and helpful so really there is no excuse for this behavior. Professionalism in the work place and courtesy is a direct reflection of the school and someone higher up should be made aware of this issue. I found out that there was just a simple problem in the delivery of my document that did not display the official letter head, after calling again and staying on the line and remaining as calm and professional as humanly possible. I just tried to be overly complimentary and said something to the affect of, "I understand you must be extremely busy and hate to trouble you," felt like I was pulling teeth for assistance. Unfortunately, this is the person you have to go through so the only thing you can do is try again if this is where you want to go. In the mean time make sure your letter of rec has an official letterhead and is signed. Is the letter of rec from a practicing D.O./MD? Best of Luck

Does anyone happen to know what day the committee meets? It slipped my mind that I should send in my DO recommendation to them because I figured they had already reviewed my application, but since I haven't gotten a letter, I suspect they would be reviewing it.

I just sent it in so they should have it by tomorrow... Someone said back in 2003 that they met on Thursdays.

Just wondering if anyone had any interview advice or questions i should 'prep'. I had all my interviews in October but I have PCOM on Monday While i received acceptances to other schools, PCOM is my top choice and I don't want to seem rusty.

Hey all, I am late in the game..... money is a huge issue for me. I haven't submitted my secondary yet. Should I? Is it worth the money this late in the game? Anyone know how much of the class is full?

The 2018 class is far from filled and a secondary costs a little more than a full tank of gas. Interviews are offered into March. Go for it.

Can someone enlighten me about the residency process. Would I be able to match in any state or only those that are affiliated with PCOM?

I also interview Monday so I am looking for advice as well!

My stats are 3.5/3.4/28 and I have been complete since the end of August. I have over 1200 recorded volunteer hours as a Patient Care Technician and an additional 600 employment hours as a Medical/Surgical Assistant. I've shadowed 1 DO and 4 MDs and submitted three LOR (1 from DO, 2 from MDs). I know my numbers are average for the school. I've received no HOLDS or Waitlist emails from them so what do you guys think about my chances after not hearing a peep from PCOM since early September?

I'm in the same boat... I think it's just such an unpredictable thing that it's not bad or good we have not heard. PCOM receives nearly 7 thousand apps I believe so it takes time and the luck of the draw.

Accepted! Although I'm still wondering why/how/if I am dreaming. I'll admit it, I started tearing up as it's my first acceptance.

For those of you who want to know:
OOS student, Complete 10/1, Interview 11/12, accepted 11/26 (2 week turn around). The MCAT tortured me (I got a 23). <--- That being said I really do believe they look at you're ENTIRE application. So folks out there concerned w your MCAT score or GPA or anything else try to focus on the positives you bring to the table.

Don't give up hope you guys!!

Congrats! I definitely know how exciting that first acceptance is - especially when you feel like an underdog in the whole process... quick question, are you an URM?

My interview at PCOM was anything but stressful so don't worry too much! Everyone was so welcoming and laid-back, just focus on why you want to be a physician, your journey to this point, and why you want to attend PCOM. Best of luck 🙂

Thank you! 😀

Been complete since September. I'm OOS, have a 3.65 cGPA/ 3.60 sGPA with a 32 MCAT. 3+ years clinical experience (ongoing), 5 years of bench research, 220+ hours of patient-interactive volunteering, TA-ed, mentored and have 3 research publications.

Still no news??? Did they already make a decision on my file or they toss it in the pending pile?
Where's the love at?

Interviewed today. I second that the interview style was incredibly relaxed. My questions were super broad, nothing specifically related to my application plus one "ethical question".
