Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship 2020/2021 cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have people started declining interviews yet? How many are people going on? I can start - 10 invites, finished 7, have not declined any yet. Lots of rejections.

How does Loma Linda compare to UTMB? Any input?

In my opinion Loma Linda is a lot more academic compared to UTMB. A lot of emphasis is given to research and QI projects and expectation is that you should complete and submit a project by end of your fellowship. Clinical exposure is decent though the last 8 months of fellowship, there is hardly any clinical exposure and most of your time is spent on research.

UTMB on the other hand is a more clinically oriented program and the infrastructure is better at UTMB compared to Loma Linda. The fellows seem to be pretty sound especially with their Critical Care skills. Also if geography matters, UTMB much better in terms of its location although this is subjective.

Hope that helps.

10 interviews (7 PCCM, 3 Pulm) ... No intention of cancelling any and still holding out hope some more ... What do people consider as being a safe amount of interviews for matching?

This is a really important question this season - what are a comfortable number of interviews. Traditionally it has been 8, but this year?

I highly doubt anyone will be rejecting any invites unless they accept a CCM spot.

Agreed it is highly unlikely anyone will be dropping interviews unless they’ve completed upwards of 15+ or accepted a CCM position. It’s just far too risky this year. The soap may honestly be a real possibility as a result

27 invites (PCCM), already cancel 2, probably will cancel more during this week.

8 PCCM invites, none declined. 4 down, 4 to go. GL everyone!

Has anyone been successful in getting off a waitlist wether by emailing the coordinator or through people canceling? Really sucks to get an invite only to find no spots!!

It depends on if programs are offering more interviews this year to compensate for the virtual process. If they are then we don’t know what the magic number of invites needed will be. If they are instead offering the same number of interviews, and applicants are doing more than usual (which seems to be the case), then programs will have to go further in their rank list to fill spots. That would seem to indicate that you need less invites than normal to match

Should be less right? Or am I misunderstanding?
I don't know the answer but I am sticking to 13 interviews. I got 21 invites and canceled 8 that I realized I would not rank that highly in comparison to others. If this comes back to hurt me so be it but I don't see the point in interviewing at 15+ places when others only have a handful of invitations.

I was told that they’re interviewing the same number of applicants.

I am at 9 right now. 8 PCCM and 1 Pulm. Although, I am really happy with the ones I have, with this competitive season would like to see myself touch 12.

Anyone heard from the Pulm only Larkin Community Hospital Palm Springs Campus Program or the Roger Williams programs?

UT Houston coming in with the very late ii for CCM. Not sure if they did multiple waves or what.

was told that RWMC will take an internal candidate and may not go for the match by an insider.

Didn’t hear anything about Larkin and my ‘connection’ there ghosted me lol

I really think it is very unprofessional to participate in the match via ERAS and then end up by filling spots by internal candidates outside the match. Would have been better if they could do it outside the ERAS application thing and not make hundreds of people pay for the application for no reason.

To the others who've accepted CCM offers (Congrats btw!), did you go to eras to individually withdraw from every other program? Or are you standing pat and seeing other rejections/IVs come in before declining?

I don't want to play the what-if game and would rather not see any more offers for interview if any and would rather they just go to other candidates.

I withdrew when I signed the LOI...

Still getting rejections though

I withdrew interviews I had scheduled. I didn’t realize you could withdraw from the programs all together

Yea you can. It seems you have to do it individually though so It's a bit tedious when you applied to >180 programs 😵

Anyone planning on cancelling U of Toledo? Stuck on the waitlist...

I am on the waitlist too. As per the coordinator, there are total3 candidates on the waitlist, so they might open new slots if no cancellations occur. Anyways they are interviewing until 11/10, someone will cancel.
