Anyone applying for Spring or Fall admission?

I applied for Fall! Decided to apply after spending the summer with an SGU grad. She loved the school and the atmosphere there! I have my Skype interview on Thursday.
I applied for Fall as well. My interview is at the end of this month.

Can you ask for the skype interview in lieu of traveling to a US location for a person to person interview? Also, I heard St. George students need to take the USMLE? Does anyone know anything about that?

I’m sure you can ask. I’m not sure how successful that would be though as far as them saying yes.
They definitely don’t have to take the USMLE. That’s for med school, not vet school. The my follow a US-based curriculum so it’s really all the same as a US vet school as far as what tests you need to take.

OK, cool. My friend just got an email saying that someone will be calling them to set up an interview and it looks like they will be asking for them to travel and I saw the other people on here saying they got a skype interview.

The Skype interview is for those of us that don’t live within a certain distance of an SGU grad that has volunteered to do interviews. My interviewer is 4 hours from me. Personally I would so much rather interview in person!

did my interview on Tuesday! it was in person and the person was really nice and gave me really good insights about the school. they have a set of questions to ask you and they type it out on the computer as you're talking. that kind of made me feel better because she wasn't staring me down often

Has anyone else that’s been granted an interview been asked to take the GRE again? They told me it would “enhance” my application. If I don’t do significantly better on my scores do you think they’ll reject me? This test literally haunts me in my sleep lol

Ugh, that sucks. Did you study the first time you took it? I’m not the best standardized test taker so I used Magoosh to prep and did better than expected. It’s also reasonably priced.

Yes I did and I even took a prep course through Kaplan! I’ve heard great things about Magoosh so I’m probably going to use that this time around. I just don’t do well on standardized tests.

Did they give you a minimum score that they want?

Does anyone know if they have a bottom line GRE? Flying out for an interview ($$$) and then having to retake the GRE without knowing an expected score has me wondering what to do.

They didn’t say in the email I got but I made a phone call appointment with Krista for this upcoming Monday so I plan on asking her that exact question. I will keep you updated once I find out! Kinda unrelated but I met with admissions at UPenn last summer and they told me the percentile they wanted (70’s). So I’m hoping SGU will at least give me a percentile range to aim for.

Good idea!

I was told to retake the GRE when I applied a couple cycles ago and I got a few points higher on it than the first time. I still got an interview after submitting my new score and my fall transcript. To me it was worth retaking in order to get the interview because I had a lower overall GPA, but it just depends on you as an applicant. I'm currently in my second semester at SGU, so if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

When I was applying Krista told me that the average for the pervious term was 304

Hypothetically speaking, say I don’t get their average score am I totally screwed?

No I don't think so!! It's the average so half of the people that were accepted technically got less than that! Plus your grades and essays and interview are taken into account too, it's not just your GRE score

I have an interview coming up I’m so excited/nervous! I think I’ll do well it’s just so nerve wracking at this stage.

Mine was super chill!! I'm sure you will do great! They asked about my motivation to become a vet, my previous vet med experience, about goals that ive achieve on my path to veterinary school, personal and educational strengths and weaknesses. Make sure you know approx average salary for a new grad as well as some current issues in the veterinary field. If you have any specific questions about the application/interview process or about SGU and Grenada let me know!! Happy to help

Hey all. Just matriculated for the January 2020 term (SVM). I was also asked by the admissions committee to re-take the GRE and I used Magoosh Prep this time around. I highly recommend this test prep--they offer a guaranteed +5 score or your money back for the service. For reference, the average GRE score is currently a 305. Wishing everyone the best of luck!!

P.S. if anyone is looking for roommates for this upcoming year I am looking at renting a 3bed/3bath or 5bed/5bath condo in LAE called Prickly Bay Waterside Condos. Rent will be roughly $1500/month with everything included and it is a 10 minute bus ride from the University. Yes, living in Grenada is THIS expensive. Unless you live in the triple nine dorms as a first termer (Bromeliad dorms) you will be paying around $1400-$1500 per month in rent anyway for an outdated and crammed dormitory style living.

You can't live in the triple nine as a DVM student, they're only for undergrad students. Your only options are triple, double or single for first term.

Is that $1500/month for the whole condo or per person?

It definitely doesn't have to be that expensive to live in Grenada... I lived in a gorgeous 3 bedroom/3 bathroom house there overlooking Grand Anse beach and the Caribbean Sea, and rent for each of us was $550/month. My first semester I was in a much less gorgeous but fully functional 3 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment and rent for each of us was $400/month. Both of these places were pet friendly. Grenada is much like the US; you can either pay a ****-ton for rent and live in a high-end, luxury apartment, or you can live in a normal place that's not AS nice, but nice enough, for a reasonable price. Take time to look around. It's also easier once you're on the island to find places, so you may live one place first term then move elsewhere after that.

That’s a relief. Did you have to sign a lease for x number of months or were you able to pay month by month? I would rather not have to pay rent or sublet for the summer months when I’m not in Grenada.

Most leases are by term or by year since they understand that a lot of the renters are students. We were charged reduced rent essentially for storage for the months we weren't physically there.

Is that $1500 per person? Because if it is I would definitely recommend checking around for other places. There's pleanty of cheaper options that include everything you would want/need. Don't just be sold on the fact that a place has a great view or just on the location. I've had many classmates hate where they live when it looks like a great place because of management or the price is ridiculous for what you get.

Hi there! I got an interview with SGU and was wondering if anyone here has gone there with a spouse? I read that spouses aren’t allowed to work on the island so not sure how couples would make ends meet and keep the non-student from going crazy with nothing to do while their partner is studying all the time!

Congrats on your interview! I do not have a spouse here but I do know that there is a significant others organization that they can join that has a lot of events and things for them to do! They understand that people do bring SOs with them and really try to make it as easy as they can for them. I also know an SO who makes a bit of money walking dogs here on the island. I know it's definitely not enough to make ends meet but it's something!

Those who have had an interview, how long did it take to hear back from admissions about an accept or decline decision?

It honestly varies. For many people, myself included, it took a couple months for them to say we were accepted. They give you a date that you’re supposed to hear by, and often they go past that by a few weeks.

After my interview I received an email when my interviewer submitted her feedback. It said that final decisions typically take 4-6 weeks. I haven’t heard anything yet but it’s only been 2.5 weeks since my interview so I can’t comment on how accurate their timeframe is.

Thanks! I just had my interview late Friday evening. I haven't received an email yet, maybe due to the weekend? Just want to know what everyone is experiencing. Good luck to you all!

If your applying for fall how long since you sent in your application did you get an interview?
I submitted my application on 9/2 and received an interview invite on 9/4. My application was verified on 9/4. My interview wasn’t until the end of September. I received an email after my interview that stated a final decision should be made in 4-6 weeks when the committee meets.

When we’re you able to look at the portal online to check your status? All I’ve received is my ID number

Does SGU send out denies? I sent my application in almost 2 weeks ago and have only heard that the committee was looking at my app a week ago but nothing since. Getting ancy...

Don't get too anxious that other people have heard back. SGU does rolling admissions, so they look at the applications as they come in and the committee meets at certain times together to go over applicants. Just be patient I know it's hard!

For anyone still waiting on interview invites I emailed Krista and she said that all initial decisions for interviews should be out by the 15th!!
